PAGE A-2—COALGATE RECORD REGISTER—FEBRUARY 4, 2015

Chuck Swindoll is one of my favorite authors. Recently he wrote the following ...

With the dawning of a new year comes a deluge of resolutions, reminders, and exhortations. They all follow similar how-to themes—how to increase your efficiency, how to make every moment count, how to invest your time wisely and productively.

Well, just for some tongue-in-cheek fun, I’d like to take the opposite tack. I’m going to tell you how to waste your time. That’s right, if you follow this advice, you will make absolutely no progress this year. Guaranteed!

First, worry a lot. Start worrying earlier in the morning and intensify your anxiety energy as the day passes. Short on a supply of things to worry about? Check the newspaper, television, or Internet. You’ll have enough bad news, doomsday reports, human tragedies, and late-breaking calamities to keep your heart and mind churning all through the night.

Something I have found helpful in my own worry world is to do a lot of reflecting on my failures and mistakes. If you’re a parent, think long and hard about what you should or could have done for your children. That will give guilt the green light it’s been waiting for. To add a touch of variety, you might also call to mind some things you should not have done. Regret fuels worry in many creative ways.

Do you need a few other categories to camp on? The things you don’t like about your marriage or your job. The possibility of a leaky roof, car trouble, and aging. Hanging around negative people is another secret you won’t want to forget this new year. If you plan all this right, you’ll be loaded with a full pack of worries long before February comes. Start now! Those potential ulcers need fresh acid.

Second, make hard-and-fast predictions. Why not? A whole new year is in front of you. Your date book is empty and ready to fill with detailed plans. Of course, you’ll need to ignore that little throwaway line in the fourth chapter of James:

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. (13-14, emphasis added)

Forget this verse, and chisel your expectations in stone, convinced that things will turn out just like you plan.

Third, fix your attention on getting rich. With this mind-set, you’ll fit right in with most of the hype that’s pouring out of entrepreneurial seminars and upbeat sales meetings. Make certain to get your ideas about money from the secular bookshelves, and definitely don’t pay attention to men like Solomon, who wrote:

Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it.

When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings

Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens. (Proverbs 23:4-5)

I mean, what does Solomon know about money and contentment and consequences?

Fourth, compare yourself with others. Here’s another surefire time-waster. Not only will you ricochet between the extremes of arrogance and discouragement, you will spend another year not knowing who you are.

If external beauty happens to be your thing, comparing yourself to the latest Hollywood hulks ought to help you men . . . and those gorgeous models they plaster on the covers of Vogue will do nicely for you women. The next twelve months will be a humdinger so long as you keep your gaze on the horizontal. A quick tip—have the Valium ready.

Fifth, lengthen your list of enemies. Playing the Blame Game will keep your wheels spinning more than any other activity. Your skill at this game should improve with age because the longer you live the more ammunition you have. With a full arsenal of suspicion, paranoia, and resentment, you can waste endless evenings rehearsing your feelings of hate as you stew over those folks who have made your life miserable.

There you have it, five proven time-wasters. Put these suggestions into motion, and your new year could set records in wasting valuable time.

But on the other hand, who wants to do that? No one aims to run in circles—it just happens. So, let’s get serious. Beware of the time-wasters! Instead, pray more than worry. Be flexible. Give more. Be content with the way God made you. And let the oil of forgiveness loosen your grip on those grudges. In other words, make this year your most productive ever.

That’s my plan!—CC—

All newspapers make mistakes but this is one of my all time favorites . . . Editors at an Australian newspaper may have to have that uncomfortable conversation with reporters about double-checking their sources – and hearing. In the midst of recent floods in the state of Queensland, The Rockhampton Morning Bulletin reported in its January 6th edition that floodwaters were so great that 30,000 pigs were seen floating down the Dawson River. But apparently the Morning Bulletin reporter misheard the source, who actually said that “30 sows and pigs” were seen floating down the river.

—CC—

I remember as a youngster that Santa Claus brought me an Erector Set. It took only a few days for me to realize that I was not going to be an engineer. However my friend and neighbor Larry Sweten also received one and he could build almost anything. The Erector Set is now over a century old but there is some interesting news about the sets. For millions of mechanically inclined young tinkerers, the Erector Set (known in Europe as Meccano) has been the ultimate kit. This collection of perforated metal beams and panels, held together with small nuts and bolts, can be used to create everything form locomotives to cranes to Ferris wheels. Even better, a system of pulleys, gears and tiny electric motors allows you to bring your creations to life. The classic toy – now over a century old – is poised to take a step into the modern age. Last week, the company introduced the Meccano Meccanoid G15 KS, a build-it-yourself robot that’s markedly smarter than the other toy humanoids. Standing roughly as tall as an 8-year-old child (4 feet high), with big, WALL-E-style eyes, the Meccanoid has a computing module in its chest that allows it to pull off a number of neat tricks. Like other robots designed to teach children programming basics, this one has an app for smartphones and tablets for remotely controlling the robot using a drag-and-drop interface. But unlike others, you can also interact with it directly. For example, you can move the robot’s arms and head and set it to replay those motions, kind of like a programmable action figure. The Meccanoid can even mimic your physical movements in real time. Throw your hands in the air like you just don’t care, and the Meccanoid will do the robot equivalent. Voice-recognition lets the Meccanoid respond to basic voice commands like “walk forward.” Children can program it to recognize custom commands, too. The Meccanoid can also speak, and, when asked, will announce the time or tell a joke (Jimmy Fallon, watch your back). This robot’s range of motion is a bit limited. Only its arms and neck have motors, and the wheels on its feet can roll just forward and backward (although the robot can turn). But, as with any Meccano set, this one can be reconfigured in myriad ways – including a dog, scorpion and dinosaur – and is compatible with all classic Meccano parts – even the ones you might have had growing up. Even though it has been half a century since Larry and I had an Erector Set, I suspect he will buy the robot . . . I also suspect I will not.

—CC— And last of all, my favorite Super Bowl story . . . Josh Rollings writes . . . New to the area, my wife and I had been invited by neighbors to join them and some other couples in watching the Super Bowl on TV. During half-time, while my wife was in the kitchen helping the hostess, the conversation turned to videos. “We made a video of all of us in San Diego,” one of the women told me. “Want to see it? It’s in the car.” And she promptly ran out to get it. Minutes later, while we were watching the tape of them running on the beach, my wife walked in from the kitchen. “Those are the ugliest women I’ve ever seen in a commercial!” she exclaimed, taking one look at the TV. We watched the second half of the game at home.

COALGATE RECORD REGISTER—FEBRUARY 4, 2015—PAGE A-3

A Sequoyah County Judge with links to Coalgate has recently retired from the bench but hopes to seek active retirement to con-tinue working in the drug court pro-gram.

Associate Dis-trict Judge Dennis Sprouse of Sal-lisaw graduated from Coalgate High School where his father was superin-tendent of schools and his mother was a speech and Eng-lish teacher.

Sprouse is one of 21 state judges whose retirements were late Decem-ber 2014 or Janu-ary 2015.

Sprouse was born November 19, 1952, in Albuquer-que, NM.

“My Dad was assigned to the Atomic Energy Commission. We bounced around a lot but moved back home (Oklaho-ma) in 1957. Both parents were from East-ern Oklahoma,” he said.

His father was from McCurtain in Haskell County and his mother was from Bokoshe in LeFlore County.

Sprouse graduated from Coalgate High School in 1971.

He went to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa and studied interpersonal communica-tions, graduating in 1975.

His first 40 hours of legal education were at Oklahoma City University School of Law. His last 50 hours were at The University of Tulsa School of Law. He graduated from law school in 1977, he said.

Former Coalgate HS student retires from bench

Judge Dennis Sprouse

After being admitted to the bar, he moved to Sallisaw and opened his own law office.

“I am a firm believer in the Good Lord. I came out and hung up my shin-gle, and that was that, and prac-ticed for eight years in Salli-saw,” he said.

On June 2, 1986, he was sworn in as a Special Judge.

“I served al-most 25 years there,” he said.

When the as-sociate district judge retired, Sprouse filed for the office in 2010 and was unop-posed for the election.

He’s hoping he and his wife can travel some after he retires.

“I do teach at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith,” he said. He has been teach-ing business law there the past 13 years.

“I’m going to seek active retirement status...preside over cases,” he said. “I’ve been asked to keep the drug court going. I started working that six or seven years ago.”

A drug court for adults provides eligible, non-violent felony offenders the chance to participate in a court supervised treatment program instead of incarceration.

“I won’t get any payment, but it’s my way to give back to the community,” he said. “Drug court really is my passion. It’s kept me at the courthouse.”

Felony cases filed These are some of the criminal cases that the Coal County Sheriff’s Office wrapped up over the past couple of weeks.

Methamphetamine lab On Monday, charges were filed against John Wilton Ward, 58, Coalgate, and Gary Ray Wainscott, 49, of Wetumka in connection with a Coal County methamphetamine lab. Ward made his first court appearance on Monday, and a bench warrant was issued for Wainscott. Probable cause affidavits filed by deputy Nicholas Davis and Ron Marley state that evidence of a meth lab was found during a consent search at a residence north of Coalgate on January 29 after the deputies responded to a call from family members of Ward. Ward has been charged with felony manufacture of controlled dangerous substance/possess material with intent to manufacture and possession of a precursor to manufacturer a CDS. He also faces a misdemeanor count for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Coal County Sheriff’s Report During Ward’s initial court appearance without an attorney, the Court entered a plea of not guilty to all charges on his behalf. His bond was set at $201,000 with a preliminary hearing conference scheduled for February 5. Wainscott has been charged with felony manufacture of controlled dangerous substance/possess material with intent to manufacture and possession of a precursor to manufacture a CDS.

Automobile theft, burglary A Pontotoc County man and a Johnston County man are facing felony charges related to a burglary and larceny of a truck. Dustin Kyle Johnson, 27, Ada, was charged January 26 with larceny of automobile after former conviction of a felony and burglary in the second degree after former conviction of a felony. Ryan Anthony Dew, 26, Tishomingo, faces burglary in the second degree and knowingly concealing stolen property. Johnson is accused of stealing a 1997 Ford flatbed truck from a Coal County ranch during the night of January 15 or early morning hours of January 16. A 500-gallon diesel tank and generator/air compressor were on the flatbed. He is also accused of breaking into a building on the ranch. Several hand tools and miscellaneous horse equipment were reported missing. The ranch owner told investigator Jarel Bailey that this was the second burglary

that had occurred at the ranch. Bailey’s investigation led to Johnson and Dew, and bench warrants have been issued for their arrests. Johnson pleaded guilty in June 2014 in Pontotoc County to possession of controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school; domestic abuse assault and battery; and knowingly concealing stolen property. He received a suspended sentence on each of the charges. Dew faces felony burglary in the second degree in connection with the burglary of the ranch building and knowingly concealing the stolen diesel tank and generator.

Illegal drugs Arli Jo Goforth, 40, Ada, was arrested the night of January 27 after deputy Jarel Bailey conducted a traffic stop on her vehicle after he observed the vehicle crossing the centerline several times. Bailey said Goforth was shaking uncontrollably, was unsteady on her feet, had glazed eyes and an odor of marijuana. She told Bailey she had not smoked marijuana but ate a “line” of meth and chased it with Coke. A small baggy containing a crystal substance was in one of her pockets. The substance field tested positive for meth. Goforth has pleaded not guilty to felony possession of controlled dangerous substance and misdemeanor driving under the influence of drugs. She has entered a plea of not guilty to both charges and is scheduled for a February 5 preliminary hearing conference. Her bond was set at $11,000.

The Tupelo Tigers have some work to do prior to the rapidly approaching Class B basketball playoffs. Coach Clay Weller will play three more basketball games before the all-important post-season campaign is launched for small schools across Oklahoma. The Tigers were slated to host Wapanucka on Tuesday, February 3. This meeting could very well be a preview of the district championship showdown. That’s because Tupelo and Wapanucka have been assigned to the same district site – Wapanucka. The 3-team district will also include the Milburn Eagles. Tupelo and Milburn will face each other on Friday, February 13 in the first round of the district tournament. The loser of this showdown will be eliminated from post-season action. The winner will advance to a Valentine’s Day (night) district championship against Wapanucka – the tournament host. Tupelo’s meeting with Milburn is the critical one. The Tigers or the Eagles will drop from post-season

play on that Friday night. The winner of Tupelo and

Milburn will advance to double-elimination status for the rest of the playoffs. The loser of Saturday’s district finals will continue on to the regional tournament and continue playing until losing a second time. “We have February 13 vs. Milburn at 8:00 p.m. at Wapy (Wapanucka),” Coach Weller said. “Winner will play Wapy at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.”The Tupelo head coach was not disappointed with his team’s assignment at Wapanucka. “I like our draw,” he said. “I think if we go play well we got a good shot to win our district.” Despite his confidence in his Tigers, the Tupelo boss is not taking anything for granted. “Wapy has a good ball club,” he warns. “They have won several ballgames.” Tupelo enters this week with a record of 5-12. Even so, there is reason for confidence from Tupelo fans. “I think the tough schedule we’ve played should have us prepared,” Coach Weller said. It will be very interesting to see how the Tupelo vs. Wapanucka game comes out

early this week. One team will earn the win and likely gain a lot of confidence for their potential meeting on February 14. The other two games remaining on Tupelo’s schedule will include a road game with Victory Life on February 9 and then a home game on February 10 against the dangerous Kiowa Cowboys.---AT A GLANCETupelo Tigers results (5-12)Nov. 4 @ Stringtown, won 59-50 Nov. 7 @ Wanette, lost 43-34 Nov. 11 vs. Calvin, won 77-34 Nov. 14 @ Asher, lost 55-37 Nov. 18 vs. Vanoss, lost 77-46 Nov. 21 vs. Stonewall, lost 45-36---Pontotoc Conference Dec. 1-6 @ StonewallVs. The Coalgate Wildcats won once last week and lost once in a pair of varsity basketball games. The decisions changed Coach Lance Weeks’ CHS team record to 6-11 heading into this week. The Wildcats played both games last week at Coalgate High School. The CHS unit defeated the Stonewall Longhorns 56-31 on Tuesday and then lost 60-55 to Rock Creek on Friday. In the early game, Coalgate outscored the Longhorns in all four quarters. The Wildcats took a 12-7 edge in the first period and then extended it to 23-15 at halftime. Coalgate seized full control in the third period by outscoring Stonewall 23-7. The effort pushed the Wildcats to a lead of 46-22. CHS then edged the Longhorns 10-9 down the stretch to secure the 56-31 win. Dakota Powell was the star of the game with 24 points. Powell did most of his damage from behind the 3-point line and in the third quarter. The sharpshooter poured in 15 of his 24 points in the third quarter. His overall scoring included a pair of 2-point baskets and six treys. Rob Penney also scored in double figures for Coalgate. He netted 11 points in the win. The rest of the scoring for Coalgate included Nate Hardy with 7 points, C.J. Bills with 4, Bear Francis with 3 and Brandon Courson, Nathaniel Daniel and Cody Franks with 2 points each. In team scoring, Coalgate made 15 field goals, 8 treys and 2 of 4 free throws. Stonewall finished with 11 field goals, 1 trey and 6 of 9 free throws. On Friday, Coalgate was back in action playing the visiting Rock Creek Mustangs. The Wildcats appeared on their way to victory until a disastrous fourth quarter. CHS stormed out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter. Rock Creek rallied to within 7 points at the half by outscoring the home team 17-8. The Wildcats went to intermission on top 30-23. Coalgate came out in the third quarter and extended the lead to 42-31. The 11-point cushion looked great for the Wildcats. However, Rock Creek exploded for 29 points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 60-55 win. Dakota Powell and Nate Hardy scored 14 points each

to share high scoring honors for the Wildcats. Brandon Courson followed with 7 points while Rob Penney and Bear Francis added 6 points each. C.J. Bills and Brandon Ragland rounded out the scoring with 4 points each. Coalgate made 15 field goals and 5 treys. The Wildcats also dropped in 10 of 14 free throws. Rock Creek made 18 field goals, 3 treys and 15 of 25 free throws. The 5-point advantage the Mustangs had in free throw scoring was the difference in the final score, 5 points. Looking ahead, Coalgate was scheduled to play twice this week. The Coalgate Lady Wildcats played two more basketball games last week and came up short both times in their bid for that first victory of the season. Coalgate lost to Class A’s 12th-ranked Stonewall Lady Longhorns on Tuesday night. The Lady Wildcats also lost, on Friday, to the Rock Creek Lady Mustangs. On Tuesday, Stonewall held only a 13-10 lead after one quarter of action. However, the Lady Longhorns exploded for 24 points in the second quarter to pull away to a 37-16 halftime bulge. Stonewall then put the game out of reach in the third period by outscoring the home team 17-5 to make it a 54-21 cushion. The Lady Longhorns went on to outscore CHS 8-3 in the final period to clinch the 38-point win at 62-24. Coalgate’s scoring list included six different players. Mallorie Humphreys was the leader with 9 points. Shaylyn Coslow was second on the team with 6. Jessie Sexton chipped in 3 points. Other CHS scoring included three girls with 2 points each: Taylor Hall, Katelyn Shockey and Trayzr Hefley. On Friday, Coalgate was back in action with another home game. The Lady Wildcats hosted the Rock Creek Lady Mustangs in a varsity basketball contest. Coalgate bounced out to a 13-9 edge in the first quarter. However, another horrible second quarter really derailed the chances for the Lady Wildcats to break into the win column. Rock Creek outscored the host team 21-6 to rally to a 30-19 halftime lead. Coalgate trailed by 11 points when the second half started. The Lady Wildcats then matched the Lady Mustangs point for point in the final two quarters – scoring 24 points during the span. However, the 11-point half-time deficit remained at the final buzzer, 51-39. CHS’ offensive firepower featured two double-digit scoring performances against Rock Creek. Taylor Hall dropped in 14 points

Lady Wildcats fall to Stonewall and Rock Creek—Coalgate girls keep playing hard in search of that elusive first win

to lead the squad. Jessie Sexton was one off the pace with a nifty 13-point outing. Shaylyn Coslow was also solid on offense with 7 points. Checotah Heathcock generated 4 points and Katelyn Shockey scored 1. “We played pretty well,” Coach Scott Roe said of his girls. “But with our scoring, we had opportunities we didn’t capitalize on. Our defense struggled at time like in the second quarter. But what makes me proud is that they kept fighting hard and didn’t give up on anything. We just have to find some more offense, some more scoring, to be successful.” The Lady Wildcats were schedule to visit Tushka on Tuesday and then return home Friday to host the Holdenville Lady Wolverines.---AT A GLANCEJan. 27 @ CoalgateStonewall 62, Coalgate 24Stonewall - 13 - 24 - 17 - 8 - (62)Coalgate - 10 - 6 - 5 - 3 - (24)

VOTE SCOTT WRIGHT FOR COALGATE CITY COUNCIL WARD 4

As a resident of Coalgate for the past eight years, I have come to care a great deal for this community. My family and I have helped the community through many different civic or-ganizations and volunteer work to improve the lives of others and give a little bit back to the community that has taken us in as one of its own. We feel that making a run for the Coalgate City Council Ward 4 would allow us to help the people and businesses of Coalgate in a much greater way. As a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Army I know how to work as a team to get things done.

If elected, I will be committed to:

1. Making decisions that respect and are responsive to residents’ issues and con-cerns.2. Insuring the local government is living within its means while maintaining public services and our infrastructure and creating a business-friendly at mosphere for our community.3. Fostering healthy Council debate.4. Taking all ideas, issues and concerns seriously and finding the best solutions for the entire community. Coalgate's future depends on responsible, thoughtful decision making. I will bring that to the table. Please feel free to call me at 405-226-9553 if you have any questions. I will be happy to talk with you in person or by telephone.

Visitors to Coalgate Lake now have a new access road to drive on. The road has been resurfaced with three inches of asphalt, and the striping and signage were recently completed. The resurfacing project covers approximately one and one-half miles of roadway and includes the parking area and boat ramp area near the dam and spillway. Most of the funds for the resurfacing project were provided by

Coal County District 2 employees David Johnson, right, and Todd Coats inspect the new stripes on Lake Road and remove debris along-side the roadway.

Lake Road project now completeddiscretionary grant money awarded through the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for lake access roads. The grant was for $395,000. Cummins Construction in Coleman, Ok submitted the sole bid of $397,165.50. District 2 performed the preliminary dirt work and shoulder work. Coal County District 2 Commissioner Johnny D. Ward said plans are to stock the lake with more fish this year. The first round of stocking should take place sometime in February, he said, followed by a second round in October. The City of Coalgate and Coal County have made a number of improvements at the boat ramp and picnic area, and they have also partnered to add a couple of pavilions and picnic tables, which should be completed this spring. “The Coalgate Lake area is something for everyone in the community to enjoy,” Ward said. “It’s been needing a face lift for a long time.”

The Tupelo Lady Tigers don’t know how their playoff run will end. However, they know how the post-season action will start. Coach Shawn Reeves’ Lady Tigers will step into the district tournament on February 14 – Valentine’s Day – at Wapanucka High School.

Lady Tigers earn bye in district tournament—Tupelo girls will play winner of Wapanucka and Milburn game

“We play the winner of Milburn and Wapanucka on Saturday, February 14th,” Coach Reeves said. “I think our district matchup with either team will be good for us. But we must remember to go and take care of business. It’s a really good opportunity for our girls to get some hardware (district championship trophy). We must continue to work and

prepare ourselves in the final two weeks of the regular season.” There are only three regular-season games left for Tupelo. The Lady Tigers were scheduled to host Wapanucka on February 3. THS will play at Victory Life on February 9. The Lady Tigers will return to action on February 10 to host the Kiowa Cowgirls in the regular-season finale. Tupelo brings a 7-12 record into this week. The all-important plays will begin on Friday, February 13. However, Tupelo has a bye and will sit back and await the winner of the Milburn and Wapanucka game.---AT A GLANCELady Tigers’ results (7-12)Nov. 4 @ Stringtown, won 50-21 Nov. 7 @ Wanette, won 59-21 Nov. 11 vs. Calvin, lost 53-50 Nov. 14 @ Asher, lost 50-30 Nov. 18 vs. Vanoss, lost 49-48 Nov. 21 vs. Stonewall, lost 51-49 ---Pontotoc Conference Dec. 1-6 @ StonewallVs. CoalgatePolice Report

The Coalgate Police Department has filed four recent felony cases. One case involves a stolen bike. The other three cases are related to domestic abuse.

Stolen bike A 44-year-old man has been charged with felony knowingly concealing a stolen bike and escape from arrest or detention. Officer Anthony Garvin states in his probable cause affidavit that on January 25, a Coalgate woman reported that when her family came home from church, they discovered her son’s bike was missing from under the carport. A few minutes talking to the woman at the sheriff’s office, the woman called, stating that she had found the bike at a residence on S. Odon. The bike was sitting in the front doorway with the door open. Dustin Shane Beshear, Okmulgee, claimed that he saw the Next bike in a ditch and took it to the house. Garvin was in the process of confirming an active warrant out of Creek County for Beshear when Beshear fled. A foot pursuit followed, but the officer lost sight of the man. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Domestic abuse Three felony domestic abuse assault and battery cases were filed in Coal County District Court the last week of January. Robert Gene Stockwell, Jr., 46, was charged January 23 with felony domestic abuse assault and battery after he allegedly shoved his wife and pushed her to the floor with force and violence the night of January 5. A bench warrant has been issued for Stockwell’s arrest. Officer Kevin Parry was the investigating officer. Stockwell pleaded guilty in 2012 to misdemeanor domestic abuse assault and battery. Larry James Wolfe, 37, was charged January 23 with felony domestic assault and battery by strangulation. Wolfe is accused of choking, strangling and striking a female following a physical altercation at the Levy Annex involving Wolfe and other parties. Court records contain no additional information on this case. Officer Sam Garrett was the investigating officer. Charles C. Tekubie, 37, was charged with felony domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the Levy Annex incident. According to Garrett’s affidavit, Tekubie struck Wolfe in the head with a tire tool after he went to the apartment complex to pick up his daughter. Tekubie was pleaded not guilty to the charge and is scheduled for a February 5 preliminary hearing conference. He was released from custody on $10,000 bond.
