Oxfordshire Sports Partnership Coaching Conference

After the amazing success of the London 2012

Olympics, the question on many coaches’ minds is

how are we going to cope with the surge in demand

at grass roots level for sports coaching triggered

by the inspirational performances of the world’s

top athletes?

This was the theme of the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership Coaching Conference “The Legacy of

2012” that attracted 115 coaches from 9 sports for a day of talks and workshops on July 15 at

Cokethorpe School in Witney.

RFU Player Development Manager, Gary Townsend, presented the key speech on “Athlete-Centred

Coaching”, to an audience of coaches from archery, athletics, rugby, netball, hockey, football, ice

skating, rowing and synchronised swimming. Workshops were both generic and specific sports and

included; practical workshops on “Building possession with young players” and, “Developing quick

interplay” from the FA’s Paul Holder and Paul Lever. Other workshops included – “How to Deliver

Engaging Sessions”, “Developing Talent”, “Introducing Rugby to Children”, “Developing the Whole

person”, “Strength and Conditioning” , “Planning and Periodisation”, “Coaching Science - Theory to

Practise” and “Maximising Potential”. Feedback received by conference organisers, Oxfordshire

Sports Partnership, was very positive. Coaches said that the event was valuable in terms of new

knowledge, theory, techniques, and of huge benefit to their own professional development.

Gavin Williams, RFU Coaching & Playing Development Officer said, “I really enjoyed the

conference and thought it was an excellent example of partnership working”.

Liz Burkinshaw, scUK tutor said, “I was really impressed with the Coaching Conference and

Oxfordshire Sports Partnership for pulling coaches together under the big theme of participation.

The keynote speaker was fantastic.

Neil Meardon, Coach at Wallingford Rugby Club, said, “Thank you for organising another very

successful Conference. I have attended them all and always come away having learnt something new,

not just from the workshops, but from talking to people from other sports to find out how they are

dealing with different issues. A great venue at Cokethorpe School and A great Conference!”

If you would like to be involved with next year’s Conference, please contact the Coaching

Development Officer Denise Brown: [email protected] / 01865 252689.

Why? This is something that the coaching research world has been notoriously bad at and we are

trying to improve this through the scUK Excellent Coaching Practice project. Our mission with this

page is to become a hub for coaching research. Rather than just comment on what we are doing we

want to point people towards other coaching research and information that is going on..

BERKS, BUCKS & OXON GOLF PARTNERSHIP New Coaching Coordinator for BB&O, Duncan Woolger

Right Coach, Right Place, Right Time…Good coaches ensure

that individuals participating in golf have positive experiences in the

game and are therefore more likely to continue their involvement into the

future. The BB&O Golf Partnership aims to ensure that all golf coaches

involved in growing the game across the region are appropriately trained

and qualified to coach at their chosen level. Duncan Woolger has recently been appointed as a Coach

Coordinator to help implement a comprehensive professional development programme for the local

PGA professionals and UKCC volunteer coaches in the BB&O region. His responsibilities are;

To develop and manage a golf specific coaching conference to kick start a winter programme of coach education

To conduct various Training Needs Analyses in order to determine the most appropriate and relevant CPD for the local coaching workforce

To construct a comprehensive winter training and education programme for local coaching workforce

To develop relationships and a mutually beneficial network amongst local coaching workforce To assist with an appraisal system for coaches working for the BB&O Golf Partnership on the

Junior Academy Programme

Coaching Method/Philosophy: I use The Plane Truth System http://www.planetruthgolf.com/

Everything you do at address or during the swing affects impact. I diagnose what I think is making the

biggest influence on your bad shots and neutralise it. In other words, I make your worst shots better as

quickly as I can without re-modelling your swing. I really care about all my students and want them to

get back playing their best golf as soon as possible, not in 6 weeks, but in 6 balls!

Plans for 2013: To keep learning and improving. I will be starting my PGDip in Sports Coaching and

look forward to that challenge, as well as helping all my fellow professionals throughout BB&O stay at

the forefront of career development by putting on seminars and clinics from industry leaders over the

winter.

Feel Inspired Academies

Over the last 3 years the Berks, Bucks and

Oxon (BB&O) Golf Partnership has developed

an excellent Junior Academy Programme

aimed at developing junior golfers across the

Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire

region.

When the concept of a “Feel Inspired

Academy” for children with special needs was

considered in March 2010, BB&O GP were unsure of the amount of interest that would be generated,

but agreed to run a pilot project in the Oxford area based at Waterstock Golf Club. The Partnership

decided to create the “Feel Inspired Academy” which would give children with learning disabilities

the opportunity to learn to play Golf.

BB&O GP advertised 3 taster days for children with learning disabilities in the Oxford area. These

were advertised through mainstream and special needs schools, the CSP and social networking. All 3

days were hugely successful with 60 children receiving an introduction to golf coaching. Twenty

enthusiastic students were then invited to take part in the “Inspired Programme”. Each received 6 x 2

hour sessions of golf coaching throughout the spring and summer months of 2012. BB&O sourced

some funding from Oxford County Council’s “Short Breaks” which enabled the Partnership to purchase

equipment to aid the quality experience that the children would receive on the programme.

At the completion of the first year's course, all of the participants - who have a range of disabilities -

were presented with a golf club and putter to keep practicing. They were invited to come back in 2013,

for a similar six session programme. Local interest has been strong with the Oxford Times & Oxford

Mail reporting on the Academy.

Commenting on the Feel Inspired Academy, BB&O GP Chairman, John Low said: "This initiative has

been a massive success, we have had excellent attendance from the pupils and have seen

improvement in their balance and social skills during the six session programme.

The professional team led by Tom Baker, and supported by volunteers, have all been really impressed

by the commitment and enthusiasm of the boy and girls."

VOLLEYBALL

What did the Olympics do for us?

Despite a dearth of real evidence, “Joe Coach” decides to draw hard

and fast lessons from the Olympic experience and looks to

volleyball’s Audrey Cooper for some inspiration. London 2012 has

been a breakthrough Games for 50% of the population. Women have

never been so prominent, with every country having at least one

woman taking part and competitions in every sport, including boxing, for both genders. The most seen

but least commented on piece of gender equality was getting attractive young men to carry the medals

and flowers into medal ceremonies rather than attractive young women. To read the full article

Business Essentials Course Are You READY for the Tax Authorities?

HM Revenue and Customs announced in 2011 that they were embarking on an

investigation into those who work (full-time or part-time) as an

instructor/tutor/coach in the sport and leisure industry.

Since then, a number of sports workers and clubs have been investigated and found to owe

significant sums of money because of irregularities in the following areas:

Paying for the services of a self-employed coach/instructor

Inadequate paperwork for workers paid on a casual basis

Payments to volunteers and coaches for 'expenses'

Honorarium payments to committee members

We believe that our courses are currently the only training of their type specifically available for sports

coaches and administrators and that they provide essential information to ensure that they are

operating legally and safely and thereby play an important part in professionalising the services they

provide. All delegates attending the courses receive an electronic copy of the relevant course material

as well as essential forms, guides and sample contracts.

Wednesday 24th October from 10am to 2pm at OXFORD CITY ATHLETIC CLUB, OX4 2RR

their clients to ensure both parties satisfy government regulations and requirements.

The course includes advice and guidance on the following:

LEGAL STATUS We detail the definitions and requirements for the various ways

coaches/workers can be paid in sport - self-employment,

employment, casual work, volunteering with expenses - and

outline the paperwork required for each of these types of service.

SELF-EMPLOYMENT We outline the strict HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) self-

employment guidelines that, if not satisfied, can result in a hefty

tax bill for both coach and client. We detail how to check whether

you are meeting the guidelines and what documentation is

required to satisfy HMRC.

EMPLOYMENT We review the various types of employment available to those in

sport, including a detailed look at flexible contracts such as zero

hours and casual worker contracts. We outline the paperwork

Page 20: Coaching Matters Issue 8

required by HMRC for the various types of service.

CONTRACTS We provide delegates with a sample contract for self-employment

which outlines the ideal working arrangements for both coach and

client to meet the HMRC self-employment guidelines.

Funding and Grant Opportunities

Sport and Recreation Alliance

Community Asset Transfer –

case study - Esprit

Gymnastics, Swindon

The use of community asset

transfer by Swindon borough

Council has created an

‘Olympic’standard training facility

for British Gymnastics. Esprit Gymnastics is an example of community asset transfer that has worked.

It has worked for British Gymnastics which has been able to provide funding to bring the facility up to

an Olympic standard. And it has also worked for the local community where 2,000 people come

through the doors every week. For more information and to assess further resources click here.

Cash 4 Clubs If you are a sports club and are looking for funding then this might be the place for you. Cash 4 Clubs

is a sports fund aiming to support grassroots sports clubs all over the country.

We have given away over £30,000 over the past year to deserving sports clubs up and down the

country. Now we are stepping up our efforts to spread the fund as far as possible to reach as many

worthy sports clubs as possible

Mark Foster - Olympic Swimmer and World Record Holder "Community sports clubs are the grassroots of

sport. It was at my local club in Southend that I

started swimming and developed into a

professional and without the support of this

community based club I would never have

represented my country at the top level of the

sport.

Clubs need funds and that is why Cash 4 Clubs is such a fantastic scheme as it gets money straight to

where it can have the most impact."

Next funding applications will be accessed in November so don’t delay. http://www.cash-4-clubs.com/apply-for-a-grant/

The Squash & Racketball Foundation

The Foundation was set up to support anyone who

wants to encourage more people to play and love our

sport.

The Foundation has an ongoing commitment to help

more children play squash and to increase the number

of women and girls who play our sports too. We will

provide grants via an open application process as and

when we have money to spend. When we are unable to

financially support projects ourselves we have invested in a Grant Finder tool on our website - so

please visit www.thesrfoundation.org and make good use of this free support to get your project off the

ground!

We really want to make a difference and have already had £15,000 donated to a project in Islington.

Thanks TD Securities, Fasken Martineau LLP, Excitech Ltd and Academia Ltd, we are supporting a

year long project that has already delivered Mini Squash to hundreds of schoolchildren, giving them

Awards for Young People

A generation was inspired by the

Olympics and now young people in

the Vale are being encouraged to be

inspirational themselves.

Whether it be through excellent citizenship, sport achievement or brilliance in the arts, residents aged

11-18 can now apply for an award from the Vale of White Horse District Council. A total of £5,000 is

up for grabs with individual awards worth up to £100 each to recognise achievement and help develop

talents. The application process opens on Monday 3 September and there are three different awards

available.

The citizenship awards are for those who are dedicated to helping out in their community, for example

through helping in an old people’s home or acting as a mentor for other young children. The arts

awards recognise achievement in music, dance, drama, creative writing, painting, sculpture,

photography, video production, multimedia and crafts. The sports awards are intended to reward those

representing their county in any sport.

The closing date for applications is 21 December.
