the players learn and then can react quicklyand properly in games4. Taking a charge wipes out a sprint.

5. Harder in practice than in games. We will be playing against much better competition ongame night than in practice. Players and coaches find ways to overcome this

discrepancy. Play at a disadvantage each night6. Players slap five at the end of practice7. End on a positive note8. Repetition with variety

Teaching Offense

Phases1. Press O (vary press), Rotation, Transition

3 x 15 foot receivers against all traps3/2, 2/1, 3 Lane Push, 5 spacing spotsLong lead pass is thrown to circle

2. Spacing3. Sureness—catch triple threat, use bounce

passes. Pass with outside hand to outside hand

of receiver.4. Put the ball in the lane to collapse the defense

and get to the free throw line5. Shot selection—3s or 4s or we’re off the floor

Who, what, when, where we want4 = Lay ups and Power Shots

Free Throws3 = Wide open shot for a shooter

2 = 2 point jump shot with hand in face1 = Pull up 2 point shot with hand in face,

shots off the arc6. Fill rebound spots

Principles and concepts within double

1. At all times we have 5 players, screening, cutting, spacing, slipping

2. Too slow is better than too fast3. Side top Side—ball movement makes the

defense think less about helping.

4. Both deep elbows filled at all times—best if filled by screeners

5. Follow every double screen by screening the

screener 6. Follow every screen by a second cut by the

screener after reading the cutters’ cut7. Fake a pass to make a pass8. Cutters change sides of the floor—that way we

get a vertical and a horizontal stretch to thedefense.

9. Cutters change directions and change speedswhen coming off a screen. Touch screener.

10. No low block posting—all screens above thevolleyball line

11. Do not fake backdoor

Actions we want in double

1. Flare (Single, Wide, Staggered)2. Re-screen

(Back /Pin, Down/Flare, Flare/Down “Turn”)

3. Princeton (best practiced 5/0)4. Set a flare two steps wide of elbow and slip5. Down screen (Single, Elbow Wide, Staggered)

6. Pin screen (Single, Wide, Staggered)7. Drive and Space, Elbow Feed and Space8. High tight curl, Low inside curl

9. Bruin (best practiced 5/0)

10. Indiana11. Backdoor (Deep elbow and wing)12. Basket cuts

13. Ball Screens

Situations, Competitions, and Toughness

1. Game Plan2. Pre-Game Warmup

Cut throat with a special rule

1. 4 points for an offensive rebound

2. Turnover is minus 23. Ten Man Jump Ball4. Get it and go either way

5. Touched in post6. Certain types of screens7. No dribble or limited dribbles8. All bounce passes

9. Certain number of passes before a shot10. Designate a back cutter 11. Designate skip passes12. “4” (Fake a shot when you have one)

13. Only shots in lane14. Only shots off penetration15. Only shots off screen16. Post in and out

17. Cutters cannot score to improve at hittingscreeners

18. Point per pass19. Number of Possession games

20. One point games21. Short times games22. 7 point games win by one

23. Scoring team rebounds own in cut throat24. Not trapping the post is minus 4 points25. Dribble is a minus, pass is a plus.

26. Ball in the lane is a point27. Offensive rebounds of others

missed shot without fouling is a point28. Defense wins on a turnover, losers dribble run29. Dribbling, not driving point for the defense

30. Bad shot is 1 point for the defense31. No catch, triple threat is loss of possession32. Anything not fundamentally sound 1 for D

Toughness Drills1. Rebounding Cut throat2. 4 minute quarters—turnover start again 3. 15 Deflections in 5:00

4. 5 X 51 seconds of perfect defense5. Take 4 charges and get a loose ball 6. Buddy Loose Ball Drill7. 5 minutes of “4”

Situations to Practice1. Missing a free throw on purpose

2. Up 1 and ball out of bounds—no time outs3. Down 10 3:00 to go4. Down 5 1:00 to go5. Up 2 against a dead 3 point shooter

6. Up 3 at the end of the game other teams ballout of bounds

7. Fouls to give (up and down)8. Guests up 1, ball out of bounds—no time outs

9. 2 point lead and the ball with 1:00 to go

10. Fire

AUTOMATIC SITUATIONS

1. Saves—throw it to our player or our basket.

Never save under the opponents basket2. Free Throw Lineup

2 back when we shoot. Look for tip outs

3. Under 2 Minutes in game behind score clockrunning –Time out.

4. Do not call Time Outs to save possessionuntil last 2 minutes of game--unless coach

tells you to do so. Under 2 minutes—man

with the ball calls it5. Clock and score are unimportant until last 4

seconds of a quarter or 2 minutes of a game

6. First two timeouts we call are 30s

7. Last shot of quarter “Clock” is Iowa 4 (45

sec.) Start the play at 12 sec. (shot at 5 SECor less) Do not try to beat the clock at the en

of a quarter. A shot that is late is better thashot that is rushed. No shot is better than aquick shot that leads to an opponent’s baske

8. Gain possession in last 5 seconds of game ti

or behind time out immediately. Throw tohalf court for another time out.

9. 1:00 remaining in game tied or ahead—4

We want

A. Hold the ball and run the clock (timeout if in doubt)

B. Shoot wide open lay ups and free throwsthat are made

We will not acceptC. A shot other than a lay up

D. A missed shotE. Any kind of a turnover

10. 0:45 seconds of game tied—we will take thlast shot and will not take a lay up even

11. We run Duke the last 2 minutes of a game

SITUATIONS COACH WILL CALL

1. Ball (Hand grabbing wrist)—make a play fo

the ball and either steal the ball or get calledfor a non-intentional foul. Stay with your man—do not trap the ball.

2. Open hand –Ball is off back to 31

3. Trap a Ball Screen right fist pounding left

hand to stop 3s late4. Fouls to give—3 point lead or more5. Substitute defenders or foulers for scorers o

players in foul trouble.6. Green—Switch everything7. Delay of game—closest man takes it out aft

we score and the clock is running. Throw i

in to one of our players and put it in the basket again.

EXPLANATION

“4”—nothing but a wide open lay up that will n be missed (sureness, attack)
