Britain in Bloom Competition The school was once again invited to participate in this annual children’s competition which is organised by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council. The competition theme this year was “My Favourite Bloomin’ Place”. Pupils submitted drawings and paintings in response to this theme and once again produced some excellent pieces of work. The prize giving ceremony was held at Keele University and involved pupils from many local primary, secondary and special schools. Our prize winners were:
Second Prize Kelsey Jarvis-Dale Yr 8
Highly Commended Charlotte Prince Yr 8
Highly Commended Small Group Project 7S1
School Council
The School Council consists of 10 democratically elected pupils who play an important part in school life here at STB, in addition with the Head Boy, Head Girl and their deputies. Throughout the year they organise many whole school events for example the Harvest Festival. In addition the School Council work hard raising awareness of the plight of others not so fortunate in our local community by co-ordinating the whole school participation in the Salvation Army’s Christmas Toy Appeal. The School Council also put forward the pupils’ voice; raising issues with the Senior Management Team that the pupils feel are important. Year 11 School Council Representatives ~ Abbie Riley, Samuel Longstaff, Emma Mohring and Tyler Jones.

Staffordshire Partnership Media Challenge
The school was once again invited to enter a team for the Media Challenge along with 11 other schools from Staffordshire. The challenge involved pupils initially observing a re-enactment of a major incident, with the fire, police and ambulance services all taking part, at Pirehill Fire & Rescue HQ. Pupils then had the rest of the day to create a radio news bulletin, a television report, and the front page of a local newspaper based on the incident. Twelve pupils from year 9: Hannah Askey, Elinor Fox, Luke Furnival, Abbie Rose Hampton, Benjamin Longstaff, Jenny Micklewright, Jordan Myatt, Lauren Myatt, Kristian Parsons, Hannah Sillitto, Joe Titley and Elliot Wilkes were selected to represent the school. Having received professional media coaching the team worked very well together and they produced excellent work on the day. Hannah Askey and Benjamin Longstaff won the trophy for being the ‘Best Radio Broadcasters’.

Academic Success
As a medium sized comprehensive school, our results always show a range of values depending on our intake each year. We are proud of our results and we gain high levels of academic success for our pupils. Pass rates have improved considerably over the past few years.
All pupils who complete the compulsory aspects of a course will be entered, this gives pupils the opportunity to gain a core of 9 GCSEs, although some pupils with a flair for particular aspects of the curriculum have passed more, (a minimum of 5 GCSEs is the requirement to enter Further Education). We enter pupils for a range of academic qualifications including AS early entry, full GCSEs in academic and vocational subjects.
