LOCALCommunity Activist Reverend Millicent Collins PassesReverend Millicent Y. Collins,69, died Tuesday, April 14.

Born in Cleveland, OH, Collins lived her life as a resident of Syracuse. Graduating from Syracuse University, Collins was a constant presence in the Syracuse community on issues of racial justice and peace for decades.

“She was there for any movement,” community activist Howie Hawkins said. “…goes all the way back to the

60’s and 70’s. She was around when the schools were desegregated.”

Collins was the first Green Party candidate to get The Post-Standard endorsement while she was ran for school board in 1999.

“When I came on in the 90’s she was just there. Anything that was happening with the Urban League, any of their events, she was there,” Hawkins said, “She was very involved

with the community and she was ministering in the church.”

Collins had been living with her daughter Nika in Charlotte NC in recent years.

A memorial service for Collins was held at United Baptist Church, 718 Beech Street in Syracuse on April 21.

Inspector General Rejects Syracuse Police Claims Regarding Crime Lab Negligence

The acting state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott rejected claims of negligence and misconduct at the Onondaga County crime lab over the past seven years Monday.

Scott’s office investigated a complaint from the Syracuse police and divided it into 8 categories. The result of the investigation, Scott “found no serious negligence or misconduct” by the county’s Center for Forensic Sciences.

The complaint, filed by Syracuse police Deputy Chief Shawn Broton, alleged that the requests for evidence examination were repeatedly ignored by the Crime Lab at the commands of the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office.

All of Syracuse Police Department’s allegations were reviewed as well as case examples, files and documents that were used as a reference. The Crime Lab’s and Onondaga County District Attorney’s responses to the complaints were reviewed. There were over 20 interviews of the Crime Lab’s staff, the police department, the district attorney’s office, and other individuals.

The Inspector General came to conclusion that there is rift in the relationship between the Syracuse Police Department and the Onondaga County District Attorney and his office causing a sort of tug of war based on the criticism from both ends over the last few months.

“The Inspector general notes that most of the allegations didn’t directly involve the performance of the Crime Lab, but rather arise from the Syracuse Police Department’s questioning the actions of the Onondaga County District Attorney and his office…,” the report said.Communication seems to be the greatest issue of concern. The Inspector General found that on several cases, both the Syracuse Police Department and the Crime Lab failed to properly communicate to one another their procedures and findings.

“The Inspector General notes that the Crime Lab has routinely provided training to agencies using the laboratory’s services, including the Syracuse Police Department. Given its apparent lack of adequate understanding of laboratory procedures and authority, the Inspector General determined that the Syracuse Police Department failed to take steps to ensure that its command and senior staff received training by the Crime Lab. The Inspector General recommends that the Crime Lab provide training specific to the Syracuse Police Department in areas of deficiency as described in this report.”

The report said that the discrepancies between the two entities show how the Syracuse Police Department fails to understand the District Attorney’s jurisdiction, authority and responsibility for overseeing evidentiary issues and prosecuting cases. But, their disagreements

cannot be controlled or solved by the Inspector General’s jurisdiction or Coverdell mandate.

“This case demonstrates a breakdown in communication within the law

enforcement community for which the Syracuse police, the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office and the crime lab share responsibility,” the report said.

2 NY brothers face trial in $5M lottery theftSYRACUSE, N.Y. — A trial is set to begin for two brothers charged with stealing a winning $5 million scratch-off lottery ticket from the man who bought it at the Syracuse store owned by the siblings’ father.

The trial for 34-year-old Andy Ashkar and 36-year-old Nayel Ashkar is scheduled to begin Monday afternoon in Onondaga County Court in Syracuse.

Prosecutors say the brothers took the winning ticket from a customer who bought it at their father’s Syracuse convenience store in October 2006.

Officials say Andy Ashkar told the customer he had won $5,000 and gave him $4,000 for the ticket.

The Ashkars waited until March 2012 to claim the jackpot.

Andy Ashkar is charged with criminal possession of stolen property and conspiracy, while his brother is charged with conspiracy.

Brothers Nayel Ashkar, left, and Andy Nashkar, far right, have been charged in an alleged $5

million lottery scam in New York.

Cops ID driver in NY girl’s 1968 hit-and-run deathFULTON, N.Y. (AP) _ Authorities say a Facebook posting has helped police figure out who was driving a car that fatally struck a 4-year-old upstate New York girl 45 years ago.

The Fulton Police Department says Wednesday that 62-year-old Douglas Parkhurst has been identified as the driver of a car that failed to stop after hitting Carolee Sadie Ashby on

Halloween night in 1968. Police say he won’t be charged because the statute of limitations has expired.

Police say Carolee was crossing a street with her 15-year-old sister and cousin when she was hit. The driver was never caught.

Authorities say a former Fulton resident living in Florida provided

Parkhurst’s name after reading a retired detective’s Facebook post about the cold case.

An Oswego County phone number for Parkhurst has been disconnected.

Recall elections for corrupt NY officials proposedALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ Republican Assembly members are calling for a constitutional amendment that would allow voters to recall their elected officials for corruption and other reasons.

Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb

says Wednesday that recall elections are working in 19 other states where more than a dozen state legislators were removed after 36 recall elections.

The New York proposal would allow for recall votes every general election in November.

About 20 percent of voters in the official’s last election would have to sign a petition to force a recall vote.

Several legislators and former Democratic Comptroller Alan Hevesi have won re-election while

under investigation and even under indictment. But Assemblyman James Tedisco, the sponsor of the bill, notes recent exceptions as voters have become fed up with corruption in New York politics.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ Authorities say 11 people have been arrested in connection with a drug trafficking ring that distributed large amounts of cocaine and heroin in central New York.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Tuesday that the drugs were brought from Puerto Rico, Arizona and the New York City area and sold them in Syracuse and Watertown.

The 69-count indictment names 23 people charged with a variety of crimes, including multiple counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy.

The others named in the indictment include three people from Watertown and five from New York City.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s old upstate NY digs reopenSYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — An apartment building in Syracuse where author F. Scott Fitzgerald lived as a child has reopened after a multi-million-dollar renovation.

The Kasson Place Apartments

reopened this week after its owners spent $9 million to renovate the property and another historic building across the street.

The seven-story, 115-year-old Kasson apartment building is one of the

oldest in Syracuse. Fitzgerald, author of “The Great Gatsby,” was 5 years old when his family moved from Buffalo to Syracuse in January 1901. The family lived in Apartment 201 before moving to another location in the city. The Fitzgeralds moved back to Buffalo two

years later.

The Kason building has 28 two-bedroom apartments and two one-bedroom units.

COVER STORY

In light of the recent article published by CNY Vision, “New Allegations in the Ongoing SU Sports Program Saga”, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said, although he and Syracuse police chief Frank Fowler have been battling publicly for years, most of the responsibility for the tension lies with Fowler.

Fitzpatrick said the initial clash with Fowler began over a disagreement regarding whether confessions taken by the Syracuse Police Department should be videotaped.

“The dispute between Fowler and I starts with my insistence that confessions be videotaped,” he said. “What would be the downside of it? Well that’s what I tried to ask Chief Fowler multiple, multiple times. Anybody that confesses to a major felony should be on videotape. You

can Google it and you can see that he was resistant to it. Then he suggested that there were financial difficulties, which wasn’t true. We had gotten him a grant. Long story short, that was the start of a, shall we say, a philosophical dispute between me and the chief.”

From there, Fitzpatrick said the relationship had gotten worse, and he’s not sure why.

“I get along with every single law enforcement officer in this county and most of them in the state of New York,” he said. “The governor’s appointed me to commission after commission. I’m active in the National District Attorneys Association. I have relationships with the state police. I have relationships with federal law enforcement. Don’t ask me. Ask him.”

In addition, relative to recent

allegations reported by CNY Vision regarding alleged decades-long favoritism of Syracuse University athletes by the D.A., beginning with former basketball player William Edelin, Fitzpatrick said he was even more dumbfounded.

“Now, Billy Edelin,” he said. “You have to understand the Syracuse Police Department has the power to arrest anybody they want. They have what is called summary arrest power in the state of New York. In New York City, where I’m from, police officers will review a felony complaint or a misdemeanor information with an assistant D.A. before the case is filed. That would be my preference on how to do things. However, this chief and previous chiefs, they don’t think that. They have power of summary arrests. Do they consult with us on occasion? Absolutely. On major cases, that’s the

way things should be.”

Fitzpatrick said after the SPD decided not to arrest Edelin, the case was then sent to his office, which, after it was reviewed, resulted in the recommendation that Edelin not be arrested.

“They referred it to us,” he said. “And, at the end of the day, the conclusion from the A.D.A. that handled the case was, there simply wasn’t probable cause, credible evidence from all sides, to make an arrest of Billy Edelin; and that it would be best handled in the university judicial process. And it was.”

The recommendation was given to then-captain Becky Thompson, according to Fitzpatrick, who expressed “absolute nothing but agreement with that,” he stated.

In the case of Diamond Ferri, Fitzpatrick said his decision not to prosecute was based on the fact that the victim wanted to pursue a civil lawsuit instead.

“Everything we did was because we were asked to hold the case by the victim and his attorney,” he said. They reached a civil settlement. Ferri paid for all the damages that he did to this kid, which weren’t that extensive. It happens all the time. This is a punch to the face where the kid suffered a split lip and some dental damage. Ferri paid for all of that. That goes into our consideration. That is not an unusual disposition. I could find you 50 cases this month that are disposed of exactly like that.”

Relative to former football player Eugene Brown, Fitzpatrick said he did not recall the details of the case, specifically.

“I can’t find anybody in the office who remembers the case,” stated Fitzpatrick. “I’ve called the A.D.A. that handled the case. He doesn’t work here anymore. But I don’t remember this case at all.”

Regarding the high-profile case concerning three SU basketball players who were alleged to have sexually abused another student in 2007, Fitzpatrick said, in the beginning, he made a deal with the victim and her attorney that satisfied all parties involved.

It wasn’t until former SU dean David Potter got involved in re-opening the case that he decided to put it in front of a grand jury, he said.

“I was notified by the lawyers for the three players, who said, ‘Wait a minute, we reached a deal with this woman,’” he said. “I said, ‘Fine. If she’s now recanting and saying that her original story was true, that she was a victim of a sexual assault, this is serious enough; we’re gonna put it in the grand jury.’ What better way to handle it than that? Let her come in and tell her story. Let the players come in and tell their story. Let 23 impartial citizens say, ‘We find cause for an indictment.’ And, by the way, it’s not a conviction, it’s a lower threshold. The grand jury cleared them, that was it. The grand jury made a decision, the same decision the Syracuse police made, not to charge anybody.”

In the 2010 case involving former SU tailback Deleone Carter, Fitzpatrick said, similarly to the Ferri case, it was decided with the victim’s consent that Carter would plead to a lesser charge, in hopes of having an opportunity for settlement through a civil lawsuit.

“That was completely in agreement,” he said. “Everything about that was done with the victim’s consent. And I don’t know who’s complaining about it.”

Relative to the sexual-abuse case against former S.U. assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine, Fitzpatrick said he was one of the first to say Bobby Davis, an alleged victim of Fine’s, was a

credible person, but, although a crime probably was committed, the statute of limitations had run out on the time allowable for the prosecution of it.

In addition, Fitzpatrick said Fowler’s claims of a prior relationship between him and Fine were never substantiated.

“I’ve spoken to you more than I’ve spoken to Bernie Fine in my life,” he said. “So, just because Fowler says that Fitzpatrick is close to Bernie Fine don’t make it so.”

Fitzpatrick also pointed out that SPD police reports citing his involvement with suspects like Bernie Fine were fictional, and that several pieces of supposed documented information were written in haste and given to Syracuse’s The Post-Standard, under the Freedom of Information Law, simply to use him as a target.Particularly, he mentioned one SPD report obtained by The Post, signed by both Chief Fowler and Deputy Chief Shawn Broton, in which, according to Fitzpatrick, the department stated the Fine case was still ongoing at a time when it should have been closed.

“I want to be clear about it because it’s a serious charge,” he said. “But it’s a fact. Ok, when you end a report by saying ‘investigation to continue,’ well that’s just a lie. Because the investigation was closed out five days earlier by the U.S. attorney; and my investigation was closed out a year earlier. So, there is no investigation to continue. Those three words were put in there to mislead people into thinking that this report was generated a year earlier than it was. These things are made up. …And being filed at 7:30 at night. And then the next day saying, ‘Ok, here Post Standard; here’s all the reports that we had. Oh look, here’s a report they wrote a year ago, this is why the D.A.’s office couldn’t handle the Bernie Fine case.’ It’s just a fabrication. Now, is the material in here true or not true? I say it’s not true. He says that I have a relationship with Bernie Fine, and he doesn’t offer anything to support that.”

Ultimately, according to Fitzpatrick, although SU is his alma mater and he considers Jim Boeheim a friend, he has no problem investigating any crimes that come up at the university; and if any ever involved Boeheim personally, he would recuse himself from the case.

“If somebody said Jim Boeheim stole money from me or punched me I’d say ‘Ok, we’ll get a special prosecutor,’ because my relationship with him is such,” he said.

Fitzpatrick said he’s had no communication with Fowler since the Bernie Fine case; however, he is currently open to mediation.

CNY Vision contacted Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler. Fowler said he was not captain during the time most of the cases were open so he could not address them. He declined to comment on the charge regarding SPD fabrication of police reports.

NATIONALPresidents help George W. Bush dedicate libraryBy JOSH LEDERMAN and JAMIE STENGLE

DALLAS (AP) -- President Barack Obama on Thursday praised his predecessor at the dedication of his library for showing strength and resolve in the days after the Sept. 11 attacks and said if Congress passes immigration reform “it will be in large part thanks to the hard work of President George W. Bush.”

Obama spoke along with all four living former presidents in a rare reunion honoring one of their own at the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center. “To know President George W. Bush is to like him,” Obama said.

The presidents - Bush, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter - were cheered by a crowd of former White House officials and world leaders as they took the stage together to open the dedication. They were joined on stage by their wives - the nation’s current and former first ladies - for the outdoor ceremony on a sun-splashed Texas morning.

It was a day for recollections and reveries, and no recriminations or remorse.

The five men have been described as members of the world’s most exclusive club, but Obama said they are “more like a support group.”

“Being president above all is a humbling job,” Obama said. He there were moments that they make mistakes and wish they could turn back the clock, but “we love this country and we do our best.”

He said Bush started an important conversation by speaking to the American people about the United States as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants and he hopes Congress will act this year to pass reform, which Bush wasn’t able to achieve.

The leaders put aside the profound ideological differences that have divided them for years for a day of pomp and pleasantries. For Bush, 66, the ceremony also marked his unofficial return to the public eye four years after the end of his deeply polarizing presidency. “Oh happy day,” Bush said as he took the stage.

President George H.W. Bush, who has been hospitalized recently for bronchitis, spoke haltingly for just about 30 seconds while seated in his wheelchair, thanking guests for coming out to support his son. A standing ovation lasted nearly as long

as his comments, and his son and wife helped him to his feet to recognize the applause.

Clinton, too, was warmly received by the heavily Republican crowd, who applauded and laughed along with Clinton’s joke-peppered speech. He concluded on a serious note about the importance of the leaders coming together. “Debate and difference is an important part of every free society,” Clinton said.

President Jimmy Carter praised Bush for his role in helping secure peace between North and South Sudan in 2005 and his approval of expanded aid to the nations of Africa. “Mr. President let me say that I am filled with admiration for you and deep gratitude for you about the great contributions you’ve made to the most needy people on earth,” Carter said.

Former first lady Laura Bush said the library isn’t just about her husband, but reflects the world during his time as the first president as the 21st century. “Here we remember the heartbreak and heroism of Sept. 11 and the bravery of those who answered the call to defend our country,” she said.

In a reminder of his duties as the current Oval Office inhabitant, Obama planned to travel to Waco in the afternoon for a memorial for victims of last week’s deadly fertilizer plant explosion.

Presidential politics also hung over the event. Ahead of the ceremony, former first lady Barbara Bush made waves by brushing aside talk of her son, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, running for the White House in 2016.

“We’ve had enough Bushes,” said Mrs. Bush, the wife of George H.W. Bush and mother of George W. Bush. She spoke in an interview with NBC’s “Today” show.

Yet George W. Bush talked up the presidential prospects of his brother in an interview that aired Wednesday on ABC.

“He doesn’t need my counsel, because he knows what it is, which is, `Run,’” Bush said.

Key moments and themes from George W. Bush’s presidency - the harrowing, the controversial and the inspiring - would not be far removed from the minds of the presidents and guests assembled to dedicate the center, where interactive exhibits invite scrutiny of Bush’s major choices as president, such as the financial bailout, the Iraq War and the international

focus on HIV and AIDS.

On display is the bullhorn that Bush, near the start of his presidency, used to punctuate the chaos at ground zero three days after 9/11. Addressing a crowd of rescue workers amid the ruins of the World Trade Center, Bush said: “I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.”

“Memories are fading rapidly, and the profound impact of that attack is becoming dim with time,” Bush told The Associated Press earlier this month. “We want to make sure people remember not only the lives lost and the courage shown, but the lesson that the human condition overseas matters to the national security of our country.”

More than 70 million pages of paper records. Two hundred million emails. Four million digital photos. About 43,000 artifacts. Bush’s library will feature the largest digital holdings of any of the 13 presidential libraries under the auspices of the National Archives and Records Administration, officials said. Situated in a 15-acre urban park at Southern Methodist University, the center includes 226,000 square feet of indoor space.

A full-scale replica of the Oval Office as it looked during Bush’s tenure sits on the campus, as does a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. In the museum, visitors can gaze at a container of chads - the remnants of the famous Florida punch card ballots that played a pivotal role in the contested 2000 election that sent Bush to Washington.

Former first lady Laura Bush led the design committee, officials said, with a keen eye toward ensuring that her family’s Texas roots were conspicuously reflected. Architects used local materials, including Texas Cordova cream limestone and trees from the central part of the state, in its construction.

From El Salvador to Ghana, Bush contemporaries and former heads of state made their way to Texas to lionize the American leader they served alongside on the world stage. Among the foreign leaders set to attend were former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

The public look back on the tenure of the nation’s 43rd president comes as Bush is undergoing a coming-out of sorts after years spent in relative

seclusion, away from the prying eyes of cameras and reporters that characterized his two terms in the White House and his years in the Texas governor’s mansion before that. As the library’s opening approached, Bush and his wife embarked on a round-robin of interviews with all the major television networks, likely aware that history’s appraisal of his legacy and years in office will soon be solidifying.

An erroneous conclusion that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, a bungling of the federal government’s response to Hurricane Katrina and a national debt that grew much larger under his watch stain the memory of his presidency for many, including Obama, who won two terms in the White House after lambasting the choices of its previous resident.

There’s at least some evidence that Americans are warming to Bush four years after he returned to his ranch in Crawford, even if they still question his judgment on Iraq and other issues. While Bush left office with an approval rating of 33 percent, that figure has climbed to 47 percent - about equal to Obama’s own approval rating, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released ahead of the library opening.

Bush pushed forcefully but unsuccessfully for the type of sweeping immigration overhaul that Congress, with Obama’s blessing, is now pursuing. And his aggressive approach to counterterrorism may be viewed with different eyes as the U.S. continues to be touched by acts of terrorism.

Although museums and libraries, by their nature, look back on history, the dedication of Bush’s library also offers a few hints about the future, with much of the nation’s top political brass gathered in the same state.

Clinton’s wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, stoked speculation about her own political future Wednesday in a Dallas suburb when she delivered her first paid speech since stepping down as secretary of state earlier this year. Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, another potential 2016 contender, flew to Texas to take part in the library dedication.

Obama, too, may have his own legacy in mind. He’s just a few years out from making his own decision about where to house his presidential library and the monument to his legacy.

JULIANNE MALVEAUX

Someone told me today that in order to connect to young people, I can’t go bashing violent, d e s t r u c t i v e rappers, many of whom have become their heroes. They said that by speaking plainly

about the horrible messages that our kids consume everyday, I might alienate those kids who’ve become convinced that men like Lil Wayne (who has been locked up more times than I can count, and honestly may be dying) are their true role models.

I said this to my friend:

1) I’m not bashing rappers, because I love most of them. I love hip hop more than any other genre of music, and I

didn’t even start listening to music until hip hop hit the scene. Rappers are also my brothers, and I show my love by encouraging them to consider the power of their messages. In fact, I dare say that I study the most ratchet music out there, and I actually enjoy a lot of it. I don’t appreciate the destructive message, but just like eating greasy, fattening food, there is a joy we get from expressing ourselves without restraints. So, rather than presenting myself as the dietitian who pretends that he hates chocolate cake, I am the guy who says, “Look, I know you love this stuff and I love some of it too. But we have to think about what this is doing to our bodies.”

The same is true for digesting toxic messages. Sure, creative expression without any consideration for social responsibility is a lot of fun. But we can’t simply allow our desire for a good party to make us forget that we have rappers that are hypnotizing

young kids to believe that “if a n*gga makes you mad, you need to blow his g*ddamn brains out.”

2) If someone is teaching your child things that are going to put him in prison or the morgue, you are responsible for your child’s demise if you choose to keep your mouth shut. I’m a parent, just like most of the people reading this message. I have to be honest and say that my kids DO NOT listen to hardly anything I say. The same hood culture that dominates the psyches of disadvantaged kids has also sunk into the brains of my own, with various degrees of impact. So, the way I keep myself calm while having those wretchedly difficult conversations is that I know that even if they go out into the world and make dumb decisions because of these negative influences, they can never say, “my father didn’t warn me.” Being honest, that’s about all a parent can do.

My mama didn’t tell me the things I WANTED to hear and neither did the father who raised me. They told me what I NEEDED to hear, and that’s why I’m not writing this message from a prison cell. I didn’t listen to them as much as I should have, as no kid does. But as I got older and started to realize what kind of man I wanted to be, those messages became more and more relevant with each passing day.

My note for the hard-working parents seeking to raise their kids above the BS is simple: DON’T-GIVE-UP and keep on having those difficult conversations. It’s not easy for any of us.

Quick Thought from Dr. Boyce: Kids Must Be Forced to Hear Uncomfortable Messages

FROM THE BOYCE BLOG…

DR. BOYCE WATKINS

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - I don’t know where CNN’s John King got the information that a suspect in the Boston bombing was “a dark-skinned male”, but beyond apologizing he needs to explain himself.

How many sources gave him the false tip? If it was fewer than two, then he violated a basic journalism rule. Who were these sources (if you don’t want to out them publicly, tell your editor)? Did King understand that he used the kind of racial/ethnic coding that once got people, even uninvolved and innocent people, lynched?

Remember Charles Stuart. He was riding through Roxbury (used to be the ‘hood) when he says a Black man of indeterminate description, wearing a jogging suit with a stripe on the sleeve shot him and his wife in an attempted carjacking. Pregnant Carol Stuart lived for just a few hours, and their baby, delivered by C-section, lived for only seventeen days. Stuart’s report of the alleged incident sparked a national outpouring of sympathy of him, and an excoriation of “Black criminals” who

do such senseless things.

The police were nearly going door to door looking for a suspect, and several Black men were interrogated. Stewart identified one man in a line-up, and police were building a case against him when it discovered that Stuart’s wounds were self-inflicted and that his brother had helped him slaughter his wife.

Meanwhile, Stuart collected at least $100,000 from an insurance policy on his wife, using the money to pay for a new car in cash, and to buy jewelry. Unable to face the consequences of his actions, Stuart committed suicide by jumping off a bridge.Stuart was too much a coward to be judged by a jury of his peers, but hundreds of Black men could not escape the injustice of the Stuart accusations. The Roxbury community was traumatized by the results of Stuart’s lies. Innocent men were questioned, many spending time at police stations in an effort to clear themselves. Those questioned and detained included students, professional men, the unemployed, and everybody in between. When in doubt, blame a Black man, any Black man, and let the chips fall where they may.

In 1994 Susan Smith, a South Carolina housewife, said that a Black man stole

her two children. Later, she confessed to killing her own children. Meanwhile, again, dozens of innocent Black men were stopped, frisked, and taken to police stations for questioning. Clearly Susan Smith was mentally ill, but she wasn’t so broken that she didn’t know that blaming her children’s disappearance on a black man gave her lies more credibility.

The Stuart and Smith cases made headlines in the late twentieth century. Now our feet are firmly planted in the twenty-first century. Does this kind of racist stereotyping still take place? While these kinds of cases no longer make headlines, I wouldn’t be surprised if any of these occurrences continue to be. When in doubt, blame a Black man.So here comes CNN’s John King, a heretofore-respected newsman, who repeatedly said that a “dark skinned man” was a suspect in the Boston bombing. Here we go again. This kind of false reporting makes every dark-skinned man in Boston a suspect, reminds Bostonians of the Stuart hoax, and sends a shudder through those African-Americans who remember police officers going door to door in housing projects rounding up the Black men.

Thanks, John King. Your job is to report the news, not make it. I wonder if you will apologize as many times as you

said “dark-skinned man” or if you will ever explain where you got your false information. I’d hate to think that you transitioned from journalist to creative writer when you shared this information.

Some will say no harm was done because there was a correction. No harm was done if you don’t know the history. If someone described an alleged criminal as a White man with brown hair, it is unlikely that the police would go door to door looking for a White man with brown hair.

That’s the basic racism that is the foundation of our nation’s history. John King’s erroneous reporting reminds us how easy it is to blame a “dark skinned” man.

As President Obama said, those responsible for the Boston bombings must be caught and punished. We now know that the two bombing suspects turned out to be of Chechnyan descent, nowhere close to “dark-skinned” males. You should have waited until there was proof, John King, before you reported it.

No other city practices the upkeep and maintenance of white supremacy in all it’s intricacies than New York City. Today Steven A. Pagones runs a private investigation firm. He needs to investigate himself.

In the northeast it’s not the racist perpetrator that’s the problem so much as their supporters who hold on to their ridiculous beliefs. These

are the regular “normal” blue-collar whites who suddenly fill in the holes of these unholy incidents. The height of racism is being racist and having a disclaimer.

They still want us to believe that a 15-year-old black female honor student concocted a “hoax.”

We were specifically instructed if you recall, that it’s entirely possible for a black woman to rape, beat, scrawl racial epithets, and smear dog feces on herself, stuff herself in a plastic bag and leave herself for dead – extreme measures we were told, to make up an alibi for coming home from a party to avoid the wrath of her strict stepfather.

New York City wishes all black females raped by white men to be hoaxes of convenience to keep their white selves and their records clean, and so they can avoid placing value on black skin and continue attending sporting events and pizza and sub shops in peace. New York City chooses to ignore the statements of the executive director of the ambulance service who said Brawley did not respond to three tests to help her regain consciousness:

1-verbal and shaking; 2-painful stimuli i.e. pinching the skin; 3-opening an ammonia capsule and running it underneath the nose.

Yes that’s right, most of Pagones’ fans are pizza-and-beer-guzzling paramedics.

So, when the same ambulance service stated that on a scale of 1-to-4 relative to death, Brawley was a two and a half, white New Yorkers and their few black supporters know better.

On the question of alleged co-rapist police officer Harry Crist, some consider his death to be unrelated to Tawana, in fact a grand jury ruled it a “suicide” (Brawley’s attorney Alton Maddox says she identified Crist after he was dead), just a coincidence that it came a day after she made another statement to the police on Nov. 30, 1987.

Her legal team strongly suspected homicide. “If we had thought that Tawana was lying, we would have taken her to the woodshed and whipped the daylights out of her,” said Maddox.

Strangely enough big media opts not to examine his

death as closely as other aspects of the case. This is a miracle considering the tabloid-supermarket-style of the Times and Post.

Grand jury rulings – except for their direct legal affect on the case – are really neither here nor there, a grand jury can tell you it’s Tuesday on a Saturday and all you need do is count the number of people who’ll believe them.

Brawley (now a LPN living in Virginia and according to the New York Post goes by the name Gutierrez) seems to have been done-in by a judge who handed down a default ruling without serving a summons or complaint. It’s not the first time they went after her financially, but this time they stand to garnish her for a fourth of her income pretty much for life.

Steven Pagones is enjoying his time on the white horse of criminal immunity in a city where racism wins often enough to make the old south jealous. ... It’s no coincidence he refused to talk to the FBI or take a polygraph from them. That a charge of a rape kit being stolen from a hospital by an arson investigator said to be known to Pagones, should be looked into also.

If you are really interested in the truth then understand the real relationship and circumstances between Pagones and Crist it would behoove you to

watch “The Real Story of Tawana Brawley” and listen to the results of autopsy’s and pathologists and not talk-radio and racist cheerleaders.

Two attorneys no longer practice law as a result of this, so finding out as many facts as you can is imperative.

The biggest message this sends is how hard and vigorous can any black lawyer defend a black defendant against a white perpetrator or accuser? In a city as extreme as New York there doesn’t seem to be much room for that (not that this should discourage you. Truth is priceless). There seems to be some animus towards Maddox because he went to the mat for a lot of black defendants pro bono. It behooves black attorneys to be policy-breakers that same way a black cop has to be.
