He was elected into the Junior Bowling Hall of Fame in 2011. Taylor only competed in three full seasons in men’s leagues. But during those years, he managed win several adult King of the Hill events. He also finished as the top qualifier at the Super Bud Bowl and placed second in the Fulton Masters. Taylor also competed in two USBC Open Championship Tournaments (Albuquerque and Reno), where he averaged 190-plus. In Reno, he earned an 11-in-a-row award during the singles event at the National Bowling Stadium. Taylor will be remembered as a gentle soul who enjoyed spending time with his bowling peers. He leaves behind loving family and friends and will forever be remembered as one of the more talented youngsters to grace the lanes within our bowling community. In remembrance: Justin Taylor by Fran Piraino Syracuse lost another esteemed member of its bowling community in March with the passing of hall of famer Joe Creno on March 20. He was 67. Creno was a standout athlete in field sports during his youth but it was his immense talent as a bowler and a businessman that gained him the most accolades in the local community. Among his endless list of bowling achievements, the intensely com- petitive Creno was a member of the legendary Barbagallo's team. Bar- bagallo’s rolled a 3,619 team series in 1987 in the Post-Standard Classic league at Seneca Lanes, which was the highest team total in SBA his- tory at the time. Creno was also the second high qualifier behind bowling legend Earl Anthony in a PBA tourna- ment. He was elected into the Syracuse Bowling Hall of Fame in 2008 in the outstanding bowler category. Creno was also a notable local businessman who operated Creno and Kelly’s Pro Shop and A & C Tops before becoming a bowling center proprietor at Creno’s Bowl Mor Lanes in East Syracuse. Creno also sponsored a number of championship teams throughout the years. Creno provided his family and friends with many happy memories, myself included. My first en- counter with Creno came more than 25 years ago when my future husband, Bob Piraino drove me to North Salina Street so I could buy my first bowling ball at Creno & Kelly’s Pro Shop. My father-in- law, Bob Sr., tagged along to make sure Creno gave me a good deal which, of course, he did. Creno’s incredible generosity and love for his family and friends is a part of his legacy and some- thing I’ll always remember him for. He especially took tremendous pride is every success his talented daughters, Kathy and Jenny, enjoyed. Throughout my years covering bowling, Creno was always there at major local tournaments to watch and coach friends and family. He enjoyed breaking down every shot and I never grew tired of listening to his spirited analysis and passionate opinions. Two of Creno's relatives, brother and sister Bob Antonacci and Kathy Brown, gave touching eulo- gies at his funeral mass at Our Lady of Pompeii/St. Peter’s Church. They paid tribute to a special man who enriched so many lives. Joe, you’ll be sorely missed. Hall of famer Mike Daley rolled games of 300, 257 and a second 300 for a career-high 857 series while competing in the Bethmann & Russell Thurs- day Night Bowl- ing League on March 22. He was bowling on lanes 37-38 at Flamingo Bowl. Daley’s 857 is the highest series in the city this season. In Daley’s 257 game, he scored a strike before leaving a 10-pin which he missed. He came back to hammer out the next eight strikes. On his second ball in the 10th, he left a 7-pin which he converted. For the night, Daley only shot at these two spares, achieving 33 of 36 possible strikes. It is the first time Daley has recorded two 300 games in the same series. Daley admitted he was actually nervous in the 10th frame of the first game, even though he was going for his 32nd perfect game. His final shot did come up a bit high but he carried it. When he left the 10-pin in Game 2, Daley sent the ball a little wide so it came back a touch late. Upon missing the spare, his remark was "OK, I need to get my focus back." And did he ever. Midway through the last game knowing he needed a 243 for an 800 series, Daley’s plan of attack was to stay on target, throw the best shots he could and continue striking. After rolling his 33rd career perfect game and post- ing his 21st 800 series, Daley gave a very rare fist pump after decisively drilling all three fi- nal shots in the pocket. He said those shots in the final frame were the most gratifying of the entire night. Amazingly, Daley’s 857 followed the 806 he had last week in the same league. It was the third decade he has had an 800 series which goes along with his five decades of rolling a perfect game. Members of Daley’s team were Steve Bodnar, longtime Longley-Jones sponsor and teammate EC Smith and Marty Fichera. Shawn Carbone, who also achieved the rare feat of two 300 games in one series, was among the people who witnessed Daley’s stellar night. “It was enjoyable to watch,” Carbone said. It was extra special for Daley to have his 22-year-old daughter, Samantha, with him for his career night. Samantha was subbing that night in the Flamingo Jets League. ••• HONOR ROLL •••t Heidi Felix: Felix fired her first career 300 game Feb. 15 at AMF Strike N Spare. She was the 12th female this season to roll a perfect game.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Felix said. Her previous career high game was a 280. To commemorate her accomplish-

ment, Felix custom ordered a ring. She also gave credit to her brother, Ron Fox.“I owe it all to him,” Felix said.

Felix also qualified for the Post-Standard Women’s Masters Tournament last month.u Maria D’Imperio: D’Imperio rolled her second 300 of the season and the fourth of her career March 5 at Bowl Mor in the Greater Syracuse League. D’Im-perio said her last ball was a Brooklyn strike. She finished with a 645 series.

“Thank you to all my left-handed buddies for sharing,” she joked.t Tina Fabrizio: Fabrizio nailed down her second perfect game of the year Feb. 27 at Bowl Mor. It’s also her third career 300.

Fabrizio added a 299 game March 18 at the SWBA City Tournament at Lake-view Bowling Center, Liverpool.u P.J. Kohanski: A left knee injury hasn’t kept PJ Kohanski off the lanes this season. The natural right-hander switched to bowl-

ing left-handed in December after tearing his meniscus last October.Kohanski re-drilled a 14-pound ball for his left hand and bowls in one league at

Bowling Green on Mondays. He’s carrying a 200 average and rolled a 731 series in the Don Parks Memorial League this season.

“I grew up goofing around with it,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun bowling left-handed. It’s fun to see my improvement each week.”

Kohanski had surgery to repair the injury Feb. 1. But the procedure kept him from competing in this year’s Post-Standard Masters. Kohanski set a Masters record last year for high match play series with an 846 at Flamingo Bowl.

There was no doubt Kohanski was itching to take a shot at qualifying for the Masters. But he said he couldn’t risk injuring his knee further after surgery.

“I was tempted,” Kohanski said. “But I have to go back to work and I didn’t want to take a chance.”

t Ron Fox III: Ron Fox III rolled his first career 800 series Feb. 16 at Bowling Green. Fox posted games of 236, 278 and 300 en route to 814 series in the Thurs-day Night Men’s League. u Jim Tetrault: With two hands held up as a sign of accomplish-ment and relief, Jim “Jet” Tetrault, of Baldwinsville, rolled his first career 300/800 on March 23. Tetrault, 56, was competing in the

Friday Night Kegler’s Men’s League on lanes 9-10 at Thunderbird Lanes. After opening with a solid 248 game, Tetrault had 12 strikes in a row for his

first career 300, rocketing all three strikes in the 10th frame. Tetrault said his only nervous moment was in the ninth frame because he wanting the elusive prize all bowlers dream of – a perfect game.

After finishing the first game with the last five strikes plus 12 in the second, Tetrault had the first four in his last game for an impressive 21 in a row.

Tetrault closed out the third game with six in a row for a fabulous 815 series. His career-best series included 36 clean frames which is something he feels is also an important accomplishment. He added that he was “comfortable, confident and in the zone” all night long, never having to move even a single board.

Tetrault started bowling in 1975 with his brother Mick, who was part of the Jack Link’s Beef Jerky team at T-Bird on March 23. His other teammates included Tim Norton, nephew Travis Tetrault and longtime friend Tim Bressette. Tetrault’s previous high series and game were 780 and 297, respectively.

Tetrault only bowls once a week. Although he is now retired after working as a mechanic with Schindeler, he helps every Wednesday at Solvay Lanes spotting for and mentoring the blind bowlers league along with another longtime teammate, Mike Holley, who got him involved after retiring.

Tetrault will select a ring for his accomplishments. “I accomplished my dream, a 300 and 800,” he said. “I don’t know what else to even say or

think right now.” –by Marcia RussoLarry Porter: Larry Porter rolled a 727 series and finished first at the ninth annual State Bowl Singles Tournament last month at State Bowling Center in Ilion. He cashed $1,500. Dave Jecko (716) was second and Greg Puccio (710) was third.

Rounding out the top 5 were James Grago (fourth, 703) and defending champ Mike Tryniski (fifth, 700). Jeremy Macri finished eighth.

Syracuse’s Sammy Ventura defeated Dennis Erion, of Binghamton, 176-165, to win the PBA East Region Rossi Lanes Storm Senior Open at Rossi Lanes on March 18.

The win was Ventura’s second career regional title. Ventura, who rolled a 300 game in the tournament, earned $2,000 for the win while Erion earned $1,050 as the run-ner-up. Ventura became the first bowler to win two senior regional titles this season, which puts him in position to win the East Region Senior Player of the Year award.

Ventura defeated Gary Bondarchuk, of Langhorne, Pa., 207-192, and Erion defeated Chuck Pitts, of Cortland, 236-192, in the semifinal round. Bondarchuk and Pitts each earned $725 as semifinal round losers.
