CHOOSING THE CORRECT ANSWER

• Eliminate distractors; identify why they are incorrect

• Answer is based on current best practice as published in the literature, not necessarily on facility practice

• Attempt to answer the question before reading the options

• Eliminate options that have absolutes, i.e. “always”, “only”, “never”

• Review your answers at the end

COMMON ERRORS IN ANALYZING QUESTIONS, PART 1

• “Reading into” the stem

• Taking too much time on one question. A good rule of thumb: answer one question/minute

• Missing the quantifier (“most”, “most appropriate”, “primarily”, “first”, “initially”, “not”, “least”, “except”)

• Changing the answers to multiple questions

• Looking for the same questions found on practice/sample questions

• Leaving questions blank

• “Overthinking" question. This test is based on what a perioperative nurse with 2 years of experience should know/be able to do

• Re-writing question to reflect current practice/experience

PRE-TEST DAY PREPARATIONS

• Practice taking exams on a computer if this technology is unfamiliar to you• Annual competencies• Continuing education

• Know the directions to the testing center and how long it will take to get there

• Be sure that you bring a current, government issued ID, with your photo and signature

• Be sure that your name on the ATT letter matches exactly what is on your government issued ID

TEST DAY

• If possible, avoid activities that you know generate stress in the 24 hours prior to your exam

• Be rested• Avoid last-minute cramming• Eat a balanced, slow-digesting meal for breakfast or

lunch
