News from the Churches

St George’s Church We are continuing to enjoy opening the building for wider community use. Over the Easter weekend it was great to welcome people of all ages for our Easter trail and in May we will have had a Pentecost trail as well as holding our annual plant sale. Looking much further ahead, on the 10 September, we are pleased to host a showing of a film of the Battle of the Somme (on its hundredth anniversary) with live orchestral music accompaniment, organised by the

Cambridge Film Trust and the Cambridge Concert Orchestra.

It is exciting to see the church continue to grow

in its use as a recording venue and we look

forward to developing partnerships with many

more sections of the community in the future.

As I have said in previous editions, if you would

like to be part of planning this future, please get

in touch, we would love to hear from you!

St Andrew’s Church St Andrew’s had its Annual Parochial Church

Meeting on 17 April. You can read our annual

report on the church website (www.standrews-

chesterton.org). We were pleased to note that

numbers were up last year: attendance at Sunday

services (both adults and children), baptisms,

weddings and - sadly – funerals. Our income

was well up too, thanks to the generosity of

those who contribute either regularly or

occasionally. It was also individual givers who

paid for nearly half of the ‘Access for All’ project

(total cost: £120,000) that has transformed the

entrance to the church and provided us with

proper disabled facilities.

We also heard the results of a recent survey of the congregation concerning worship, our

pattern and style of services, their musical content and the inclusion (or otherwise) of children. The main conclusion is that most people are happy with the mix of services that we have, and are happily tolerant of a wide diversity (with some refreshing directness when we’re not…). There were a number of requests for more modern-style music involving young people and our new youth worker, Maggie Tate, has helped to implement that already. And then the next week may be a Sung Eucharist with traditional Anglican choral music.

The young people have had their own Lent group this year, alongside the adults, and a group of them are preparing for (baptism and) Confirmation – with the Bishop of Huntingdon coming on Thursday 7 July.

News from Chesterton

Community Association (CCA) CCA and Old Chesterton Residents’ Association will be teaming up again this year to share their annual meetings at St Andrew’s Hall on Thursday 30 June 2016. Doors open from 7 with light refreshments. A guest speaker on a Chesterton topic at 7.30 will precede the formal business of each association. Full details will be posted on the CCA website www.mycca.org.uk.

We are working with Chesterton Eagles and the City Council on proposals to revamp the changing and toilet facilities on Chesterton Rec. to provide a club room for users that will also be bookable by the wider community. A report on options will be considered by the City Council this summer.

We are pleased that progress is being made on the redevelopment of Milton Road Library with public consultation on proposed plans earlier this year. A planning application is expected to be made shortly. The development is to be carried out by the County Council. CCA is looking for a strong involvement by the community in the new building to maximise its benefit to the public.

Chesterton Methodist Church At Chesterton Methodist we are now looking at further feasibility plans for redeveloping and refurbishing the premises – we are up to options 5 & 6. If you have been following our progress over the last couple of years you will know that we had been working together with CamSight on some joint plans for the future but sadly it just hasn’t been possible to see these plans through. We will consult the local

community again soon and we hope you will be excited by our new ideas for ways forward, as we continue to plan to

invest in the future.

We need to hear from you! Cambridge City Council

is on a fact finding mission with local residents, groups and

organisations as part of a review of community provision across the

city. The city Council currently operates 5 centres: Meadows

Community Centre, Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre,

Brown’s Field Youth and Community Centre, Ross Street

Community Centre, 82 Akeman Street Community Centre.

We have already gathered views from people who use these

centres but we also want to hear from people who don’t. If

you don’t go into our centres listed above we would like you tell us:-

• Why you have never been in?

• Is there anything that makes it difficult for you to use the centre at the moment?

• What might make you think about using the community centre in the future? e.g. more or better publicity about what goes on; any additional or improved facilities etc.

Don’t forget to let us know which of the centres your

comments relate to.

Please email your responses

to: [email protected] to help us improve the services

currently provided for communities. Every response counts! Thank

you very much for your time.
