with a participatory learning approach
(stakeholder workshop 1)WP 3.2: To evaluate, document and share
strategies with the WOCAT tools

Mutual learning and
understanding of land degradation
and desertification
Trust and collaboration among
local and external participants
Identification of existing and new
strategies to prevent or mitigate
land degradation and desertif.
Selection of a set of these
identified strategies for further
assessment
Objectives of stakeholder Workshop1
Results of Workshop1
Photo 3 The selection of main effects of biomass cycle
UP: Improving awareness of each stakeholders: the water cycle is much easier to know and analysis in the study site, but the bio-mass is more difficult because the local people have no special attention to it. The multi-stakeholders participating is necessary. It would improve the awareness via knowledge exchange.
Below: the judgement
of different
stakeholders would
make the questions
and problems clearer.
Results of Workshop1
Improvement of Awareness
Objectives of stakeholder WP2 :
To select promising (existing and
potential) strategies for land
conservation to be implemented and
tested in the selected study site
To jointly select 1-2 options
(mitigation strategies) from the
WOCAT database to be implemented /
field-tested in the selected study site
in the context of DESIRE WB 4.
To strengthen trust and
collaboration among concerned
stakeholders.
Step1 Review: Recall + decide /Get aware /Review and adjust
Step 2 Options: Identify and visualize/Search based on WOCAT databases Step 3 Criteria: Identify
/Environmental, economic and social cri teria /criteria reflect the most important qualit ies
Step 4 Scoring options: assess the option /compare carefully/ small stakeholder groups
Step 5 Ranking criteria: organize cri teria hierarchically /Assigning al l criteria to categories /Ranking criteria
Step 6 Analysis Visualization
Step 7 Negotiation and Decision making
Steps of WP2
Step 8 Embedding into overall strategy
Slope crop land with gullies
Converting grassland into orchard
Workshop 2 -Step 1
4 practices (T,RF,G and B)
Checkdam land
Checkdam (When will be land?)
Workshop 2 -Step 2
Miaowan Watershed
Workshop 2 -Step 2
Workshop 2 - Step 3 Criteria
Step 4 Indicators for Scoring options
Step 5 Ranking criteria
Workshop 2 - Step 4 and 5
Step 5 Ranking criteriaWorkshop 2 - Step 5
Step 6 Analysis Visualization
Workshop 2
The dif ference
impacts Wide and narrow
range Options
The WOCAT DESIRE method is powerful tool to select
and evaluate the soil and water conservation practice. The
criteria of option vary greatly. Only based on the plenary
discussion, could the better option be selected.
The stakeholders should balance the option carefully all
the time. If we want to change a the best conservation plan,
we should do more.
Objectives of stakeholder Workshop1
Step 8 Embedding into overall strategy
