EPISODE 1Tuesday, September 6 at 9 p.m.Saturday, September 10 at 6 p.m.
Kim Philby is an undergraduate desperate to act against the evil of Fascism that is already thriving in Italy and Germany. He wants to join the Communist Party. As recruiters, Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt can get him in—but first, they want Philby to persuade his friend Donald Maclean to join with him. Philby meets and marries Litzi, a fiery Jewish Communist.
EPISODE 2Tuesday, September 13 at 9 p.m.Saturday, September 17 at 6 p.m.
One by one, the four set out to become fully paid-up members of the elite governing classes. Burgess gains access to MI5 and a secret society. However, he also has an on/off relationship with the young Julian Bell, nephew of Virginia Woolf, who wants to go to Spain to fight Franco. Philby also goes to Spain and witnesses the grotesque tragedy of bombing innocent civilians.
EPISODE 3Tuesday, September 20 at 9 p.m.Saturday, September 24 at 6 p.m.
In Paris, Maclean meets a strong-minded, independent American named Melinda. When Nazis enter the city, the two flee back to England. Blunt is being asked uncomfortable questions about his Communist past because the Royal Family wants him to work for them. Maclean starts to see Melinda as his way out of this secret life that he is beginning to resent.
EPISODE 4Tuesday, September 27 at 9 p.m.Saturday, October 1 at 6 p.m.
Maclean steals vital information about atomic bomb making from America, which he passes on to his Soviet contact. The Soviets then explode their first atomic bomb. The CIA will stop at nothing to find out who leaked the secrets. All four men are on the brink of discovery. The Soviets tell Philby that Maclean must be sacrificed, and Philby must be the one to do it.
CAMBRIDGESPIES
In 1934, Russia recruited four brilliant and idealistic young men to pass Britain’s biggest secrets to Moscow. Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, Kim Philby, and Donald Maclean are Cambridge Spies, a four-episode thriller airing on WYCC PBS Chicago Tuesdays at 9 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 p.m.
Their spy careers spanned 20 years and took them to the horrors of Guernica, pre-war Vienna, London in the Blitz, Cold War Washington, and a final flight to Moscow. The four are bound by their beliefs, their secrets, and the absolute certainty that they stand or fall together. They journey through shared idealism, shared sacrifice, moral doubt, colossal stress, and finally breakdown and betrayal.
This is the story of three students and one young lecturer from Cambridge University who became the
most notorious double agents in British history.
