As the snow recedes from Belknap, and our sacred grounds begin to wake from winter, we take pause to think about the past year and look forward with excitement to the 2017 summer. In a world that every day feels more volatile, complex, and over-stimulating, we are grate-ful for the time-honored traditions preserved at Camp Belknap. There are very few places left in the world that so consistently provide an experience for boys and young men that is values-based, provides healthy role modeling and is joyful. It takes a community that runs generations deep to keep Belknap that safe place, where boys of all backgrounds can feel welcomed, not judged, and be themselves.

We take pause to thank YOU – our incredible and dedicated community of campers, leaders, staff, parents, grandparents, family, alumni, and friends. It is because of you that Belknap has thrived for the last 114 years.

In this year’s Annual Report on Giving we celebrate the impact people have made on Belknap and the great impact beyond our borders in which Belknap-pers continue to spread the Belknap Spirit around the world. Within the pages you’ll enjoy hearing about Horace Blood’s legacy of donating over one million dollars to Belknap. At 93 years young, Horace’s wit, drive and love for Belknap still glows, a reminder that once Belknap touches us, it never leaves us. In addi-tion, you’ll hear about the legacy and continual impact of the Adams family. With a recent land donation in honor of Karen Adams Ludwig, we recognize the Adams family’s focus on preserving, protecting and continually improving Belknap.

Furthermore, we honor present day Belknap. Our community is remarkable. The numbers speak for themselves. Your gifts directly impact camp. Our year round team in Clark Lodge is working diligently to make sure each donation goes towards continuing and enhancing the Belknap experience.

Even more poignant than the increased donations is the increased community involvement. Belknap-pers are spreading the Belknap Spirit in many forms and ways. This year, Belknappers have been support-ing fellow Belknappers through career mentorship programs and giving back during service projects and career days. Spreading the Belknap Spirit is the greatest gift our community can provide. We are thankful that sometimes this is as simple as meeting up with an old friend or writing a former cabin mate a letter. Whether you are a present camper, on staff, an alum, parent, grandparent or friend, we cheer you a Boomalacka of appreciation for caring about Belknap and making it a priority in your life. We look forward to seeing many of you under the pines in 2017!

The Belknap community has once again demonstrated its extraordinary generosity and commitment by setting new records for Annual Giving. Both the Annual Fund and the Leaders Scholarship Fund saw significant growth in 2016. This Annual Giving provides Belknap with resources which allow us to keep tuition affordable, offer more camper scholarships, maintain our beautiful campus and plan for our future needs.

You continue to show us that the Belknap spirit is alive and thriving and shared by the campers, leaders and staff, parents and alumni. That spirit permits us to spread joy, teach leadership skills and add a little touch of magic to each and every camper’s experience during their stay under the pines. The Board joins me in thanking everyone who sustains and embraces that place we call Belknap through their continued generosity. Timi-Hi and Seek the Joy,

Frank KenisonBoard Chair

Few institutions whose legacy endures for over one hundred years can exist without the generosity of individuals who contribute their time, talent, and

financial support to its longevity. A stalwart of Camp Belknap’s continued strength is Dr. Horace Blood. With his most recent gift to the endowment, he enclosed a handwritten note that read, “Happy New Year to all the greatest campers in the USA”. As a fellowship of boys and men, we shout our praises; today, we celebrate Horace as Camp Belknap’s first benefactor with cumulative gifts totaling over $1 million. Now 94 years old, the former Board Chair took time at his home in Sarasota to reflect on his 86-year history with Belknap.

His first stay at Belknap gave him the opportunity to experience a lifestyle not accessible in his hometown. “I didn’t have a chance in Concord to do much of anything outdoors. We didn’t live near the woods or anything like that,” he recalls. “I think Dad wanted me to go to the New Hampshire YMCA camp, so he signed my brother and I up for two weeks in the summer of ’31.”

A state representative and future governor, Robert O. Blood’s decision to send Horace to camp also served to provide his son with role models, particularly in his first cabin leader. “My father was so busy, he really didn’t father me very much,” says Horace. “Going back to

Belknap meant Dean Williamson was a father image for me. Belknap always meant home away from home, as far as I was concerned. Always great leadership.”

Growing older at Belknap found Horace taking the mound for the camp baseball team, as the starting pitcher under the guidance of coach Bob Folsom. He later served as a cabin leader, and returned to Belknap in 1946 as the Camp Doctor while a student at the NYU School of Medicine.

Making His Mark

It was during Horace’s time on the Camp Committee (now the Board of Trustees) that he began to make the impact still seen and felt throughout Belknap today. The

arrival of Gene and Peg Clark in 1960 brought a renewed motivation towards the updating and maintenance of Belknap’s physical plant.

Horace’s fundraising skills comple-mented Gene II’s vision, and together they led Belknap’s alumni, parents, and friends during a formative and prolific era in Belknap’s history. “Gene Clark was a very aggressive guy about redoing things,” says Horace, “and you know some of the buildings were falling down, and we didn’t have enough housing. [The Clarks] had a lot of ambition, and they had the best of the camp in mind.”

In a combined effort to benefit Belknap’s infrastructure, program of-ferings, and land stewardship, the Committee’s leadership set its sight on expanding the camp borders. The first

significant change came with the acquisition of the thirty-five acre Abenaki Driving Range, which would later become Clark Field, in 1966. This was only the beginning.

Dubbed the “Miracle Project,” the purchase of Shore Acres Campground in 1973 brought eighty acres to the west of Belknap’s main campus, including nine hundred feet of shoreline. With the securing of the new land came the need to raise funds, to the tune of $320,000. While Gene focused on the planning and construction of the new Senior Division, Horace – now the Board Chair – rallied financial support to help realize their collective vision.

“We knew we had to decentralize,” he remembers. “Gene and I had a great time when we moved the Senior Di-vision, that was a fun move. We just barely made it. We had to have a lodge, had to have a toilet building, it was a complete move! I wasn’t sure we were going to make it for the opening of camp, but little projects like that always whetted my interest, even though I wasn’t up there very close to the project, I always knew what was going on.”

Horace’s negotiation skills coupled with his fundraising leadership to play a large role in Belknap’s physical growth. Along with fellow board member Bob Dastin, he helped arrange a land bequest on behalf of Helen Bell McMartin, daughter of Paul and Louise Strubin, longtime friends of Belknap dating back to the Conlon years.

“Bob Dastin and I asked them what they were going to do with that prop-erty, because they were 80 years old and childless,” recalls Horace. “Bob was a good negotiator. We flew down from Manchester to Newark [the McMartin’s winter home] and went to the airport and signed papers.”

The signing of those papers effectively extended Belknap’s borders well beyond Chase Point Road, creating what is now

known in the camp vernacular as the “New Land.” Largely untouched, save for several winding trails and a campsite, the Bell McMartin Land serves to both protect Belknap and provide an environ-ment where campers and leaders may learn about the New Hampshire woods, and the importance of its preservation.

Leading By Example

The best leaders set the example they ask of others, and Horace Blood has time and again been a leader among leaders. In addition to over forty years of board and fundraising campaign lead-ership, he has provided Belknap with financial support that has been instru-mental in improving program offer-ings to campers. With his finger on the beating pulse of Belknap’s programmatic needs, Horace’s Belknap contemporary

Hank Adams identified the additions to daily camp life that would be most beneficial to the boys that call Belknap their summer home.

“Hank was after me always for more playfields, and more basketball courts and tennis courts,” says Horace. “I was interested when they rebuilt the baseball field, I was interested in putting the top on the basketball court. That was quite a feat! In among all those trees, to get that big derrick in there, with those great big roof beams, I stood there half a day and watched them raise those beams. That was fun.”

From the Blood Pavilion’s protective dome, to the Farm Island Campaign, Leader Corps cabin, Senior Cabin 5, the Health Center, and Senior Tennis Courts, future generations of Belknappers will, in part, forever have Horace Blood to thank for their camp experience. His con-tributions to Belknap over the years – now totaling over $1 million – have made a measurable impact on daily camp life, a fact that is rooted in his desire to ensure the extension of his own time spent as a camper.

“I can get right back to my childhood. I wasn’t doing it for my ego, I did it because I wanted to!” With a hearty

laugh, he continues, “And when you put up a nice stone with my name on it, that egged me on for something else.”

Dr. Horace Blood has contributed to the betterment of camp throughout his 86 years as a leading member of the Belknap family. Whether through the donation of his time, financial support, or recruiting the assistance of others, his efforts have always had one focus: the preservation of the legacy and mission of Camp. It is a cause that he deems to be just as important today as it was when he was a first-year camper in 1931.

“We need these things,” Horace says. “Living seems to get more and more complicated with all these things around that are teasing kids. You gotta show them there’s a different way of life than that.” We thank Dr. Blood for his continued leadership and for helping to create a place where young men can get back to basics, live simply, and spend their summers as boys.

John Grossmann’s centennial history“Celebrating 100 Years 1903-2003” and John Friborg’s “The Magic Circle: A History of YMCA Camp Belknap, 1903-1983” were instrumental in providing key information to this article.

Preserving our BorDersLudwig Family Land Donation Continues Adams Legacy

Our mission statement opens with a pledge “to preserve the unique physical environ-

ment” of Camp Belknap. With a recent donation of 6+ acres of land near Camp on Route 109 in Tuftonboro, Hank Adams’s family legacy of leader-ship by example lives on.

Abutting the Bell/McMartin Land already owned by Belknap, this gift was made by Mr. Jan Ludwig in memory of his late wife and Belknap-per Karen Adams Ludwig. The middle daughter of Hank and Ruth Adams, Karen grew up spending summers at Belknap with her sisters Marcia and Cynthia. She served on Belknap’s Board of Trustees from 1996 until her death in 2002.

The land holds value for Belknap both in what it is and what it will not become – a development opportunity for commercial or residential use. The Ludwig donation will further ensure that Belknap’s acreage shall remain protected from encroachment by outside developers. Its woods and trails will provide additional settings for educating future generations of campers on the natural world around them, a passion long championed by

the Adams/Ludwig family.The impact of the Adams/Ludwig

family is felt every summer day at Belknap, from rousing Adams Cup games to tranquil strolls down Adams Trail towards the Environmental Center (itself the creation of Hank Adams). Karen’s personal tradition of Board leadership lives on in her daughter Melissa’s current tenure as Camp Trustee.

For this important land gift, we at Camp Belknap extend our gratitude to a family that continues to provide sentry to our priceless physical and spiritual environment.

BYour gift is thoughtfully considered in the context of Belknap’s overall financial condition today, and our plans for the future. We provide you with the following summary financial information so that you can better understand the security of Belknap’s financial future.

In 2016, above and beyond the core operations of camp, our financial focus consisted of rebuilding the Pequod staff quarters, which occured over the winter and had a total cost of approximately $100,000. In addition, we continued our dock upgrade program through major maintenance on the Gas Dock and reconstruction of the Waterski Dock for a combined cost of $68,000. The NYMCAH also received significant reconstruction work in 2016, as we invested approximately $35,000 in our treasured vessel. Finally, we replaced our dishwasher after 40 years of years of operation! The new dishwasher arrived in the spring of 2016 and cost approxi-mately $22,000.

For 2017 we continue to focus on long term infrastructure upgrades and a master site plan, along with engineering and architecture design work for future reconstruction of our scolleges (bath houses), wastewater treatment facility and dining hall/kitchen. We will spend over $100,000 in planning for these significant future upgrades. In addition, we will continue to care for our time-treasured infrastructure including $30,000 for a needed re-shingling of Conlon Lodge. Finally, we plan to replace our sailing fleet this spring, at a cost of approximately $75,000.

Belknap’s financial stability is supported both through our Annual Fund and through a full camp where parents, when able, have supported paying the true cost of camp. Without these two blessings, camp’s financial stability would not be possible.

Statement of Operations Notes:(1) 2016 numbers are unaudited.

(2) 2015 and 2014 numbers are audited.

(3) Increase in “Board, Tuition & Registration fee” from 2014 to 2015 is partly due to in-creased number of camper spots. The 2016 to 2015 increase is due primarily to parents select-ing the Option A and paying the true cost of camp an additional $150 per two-week session.

(4) Tuition increases have averaged 3.5% annual increases for the prior 5 years.

(5) “Endowment Income”: The camp appropriates for distribution each year 4.5% of its endowment fund’s average Fair Value of the prior 72 months. Starting in 2017 the camp’s Board of Trustees adjusted this to 3% of its endowment fund’s average Fair Value of the prior 72 months.

(6) Other Expenses include Local Outreach, Board Meetings, Annual Dues, IT, Staff Training and Bank Fees.

(7) “Depreciation & Planned Savings for Future Plant Investment” are the combination of ac-counting based depreciation value of Belknap’s physical plant with additional savings identified for fully depreciated assets.

(8) Annual Giving numbers are based upon the prior year’s fundraising support.

(9) “Net Change in Cash Balance” has been positive and surplus money has been saved for future capital expenses. In 2016 and 2015 Belknap’s Net Change in Cash Balance was less than the Depreciation requirements of Belknap’s physical plant.

14 YMCA Camp Belknap

For over 114 years, Belknap has remained committed to provide for the development of young men through the building of strong character, self-esteem, individual maturity and community responsibility. Belknap is a place where campers acquire for life the skill of leadership and the value of stewardship.

As a non-profit camp, Belknap relies on alumni, parents, leaders and friends and neighbors for support. Tuition covers only 90% of the cost of providing a Belknap boy’s summer under the pines, so charitable contributions are essential. Belknap is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. There are a variety of avenues to give back.

Annual FundThe Annual Fund supports Camp’s operational budget, funding all aspects of the Belknap experience including programs, leader salaries, facility maintenance, and financial assistance for the following summer.

Leaders Scholarship Fund for Camper TuitionThe Leaders Scholarship Fund helps support camper scholarships on an annual basis. Each donation goes toward supporting scholarships for the following summer.

Colin Brown FundThis fund was created in the memory of former camper and leader Colin Brown. Donations to this fund support leader education and training.

van Tongeren FundThis fund was created in the memory of former camper Christopher van Tongeren. Donations to this fund support scholarships for local boys for the following summer.

French FundThis fund was created in memory of former camper Peter Marshall French. Donations to this fund support leader education and training.

Leader Salary FundThese funds are in an effort to endow the salaries for leaders so that Camp Belknap may always offer competitive salaries for their cabin leaders. Donations support leaders’ salaries for the sponsored division.

giving to camP BelknaP timi-hi societyThe Timi-Hi Society recognizes donors for giving to Camp Belknap’s Annual Fund, or related funds, for 5 or 10 consecutive years. This does not include capital campaigns. Members are acknowledged in the Annual Report on Giving.

the white Pines society

The White Pines Society recognizes and honors individuals who make provisions in their estate for a gift to Camp Belknap. A planned gift ensures the vitality of the camp and its mission for future generations of boys.

Planned gifts can be made through a bequest or by naming Belknap as a beneficiary of part or all of a retirement asset. Bequests may help fulfill your philanthropic goals without relinquishing current assets and may provide tax relief for you or your heirs. Gift methods come in all shapes and sizes, and we believe what is best for you and your family is best for Camp Belknap.

Please contact us to learn more about your planned giving options, as the Advancement staff will be pleased to discuss the virtues or limita-tions depending on your personal circumstances. Joining the White Pines Society acknowledges your commitment to Belknap’s mission and sets an example for others to follow.

• 1903 •

It is the mission of Camp Belknap to preserve the unique physical and spiritual environment where young men may forever build strong character, self esteem, individual maturity and community responsibility; to acquire for life the skill of leadership and the value of good stewardship; to honor the history and traditions which are the Belknap experience; and to be a contributing citizen in the community it serves and from which it receives its benefit.
