Editor’s Note

John Henry is an African-American folk hero and tall tale. He is said to have worked as a "Steel-Driving Man", which is a man tasked with hammering a steel drill into rock to make holes for explosives to blast the rock in constructing a railroad tunnel. According to legend, John Henry's skill as a steel-driver was measured in a race against a steam-powered hammer, which he won, only to die in victory with his hammer in his hand after his heart gave out from stress.

The story of John Henry is told in a classic folk song, which exists in many versions, and has been the subject of numerous stories, plays, books and novels. In 1973, an eleven-minute animated short film was made by Paramount Pictures, called The Legend of John Henry. Later, Walt Disney studios utilized the legend in several animated shorts, including the 1995 film Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill.

About the Arranger

Neil Johnson has almost fifty years teaching experience at every age level, from elementary through university, and adult community concert and jazz choirs in North Dakota and Colorado. Neil is in demand as a clinician for regional and state Elementary, Junior High, and High School choral workshops, new materials reading clinics, and local and state choir festivals. He has directed all-state choirs in four states and serves as an adjudicator for concert and Jazz/Show Choirs in twenty states and two Canadian provinces. Neil’s first choral arrangement was published in 1978 and he has since had over seventy choral compositions published with several publishing companies. Most of his works are for three and four part mixed choruses, men’s and women’s ensembles, and have a middle school/high school emphasis.

About the Editor

Jacob Narverud (b.1986) is an American composer, arranger, and conductor. A native of Meriden, Kansas, Narverud studied voice performance at Emporia State University and is currently a doctoral student at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, where he holds a master’s degree in conducting. With a background in musical theater, instrumental, and choral music, Jake is a sought-after composer and an active guest conductor. As a vocalist, Narverud has performed with the Kansas City Chorale and the Kansas City Symphony as a back-up singer for Ben Folds. He has also been a choir director at both secondary and collegiate levels. Jake is published with Santa Barbara, Alliance, Carl Fischer, G.
