Program Notes

This lovely Welsh melody may sound like a folk song, but it isn’t. It was written in the 19th century with words by poet Daniel James and music by John Hughes. In the 20th century it became associated with the Welsh Rugby Union and is sung before nearly all rugby matches, much as The Star Spangled Banner is sung before sports events in the United States, Oh, Canada in Canada and God Save the Queen in England. Interestingly, it is almost never sung in an English translation, and the Welsh consider it almost like a national anthem of Wales. Because of that the Welsh lyric is shown first with a phonetic pronunciation underneath, and an English singing translation below that.

About the Welsh Language

Welsh is one of the dialects of Gaelic once spoken not only in Wales but also in Scotland, Ireland, and in Brittany, a region of northwestern France. While few speakers of these Gaelic dialects remain, the language is still spoken natively in remote parts of those countries. In Ireland, city and town identification road signs are often given in both Gaelic and English.

Some differences between English and Welsh pronunciation are the pronuncia-tions of “ll,” properly pronounced by forming the tongue to say “l” then blowing it out. The “dd” diphthong is pronounced like the voiced “th” in “the,” never like the unvoiced “th” in “think.” The phonetic pronunciation guide in the second line of the lyric gives a closely correct pronunciation in standard Welsh.

About the Composer

A native of North Carolina, David Eddleman was born on August 20, 1936. David has taught at all levels of Music Education and for 24 years he was a Senior Editor at Silver Burdett Ginn, a leading publisher of classroom music materials, where he designed classroom music curricula.

Well known, in particular, as a composer of choral music, he has over 700 titles published with a broad spectrum of publishers.

Since his retirement from Silver Burdett Ginn, he has continued to write music, teach at local community colleges in New Jersey, where he lives, and appear as a choral clinician and guest lecturer.
