One of several such caves in different parts of the country, reputedly hiding places used by the C13th Scots patriot William Wallace, although this one is understood to have been man-made c.1800 as an ornamental feature on the Bonnington Estate. Footnote in Cririe (1803) talks of a ‘cave which bears evident marks of the chisel’. See also CAVLP 006.

Large area of farmland incorporating Corehouse Farm, Langside Farm, Corramore Farm and Linnhead Farm forms extension to the Corehouse designed landscape (Inventory Site 354), defined by an irregular pattern of belts, clumps and blocks of planting. Although Roy 1750, Ross 1773 and Forrest 1816 show some planting around Corehouse, the extensive landscape of enclosure is first seen on mid-C19th OS map. Corehouse Brick and Tile Works with neighbouring clay pit located within the area by Damhill at one time.

007 Lady Mary’s steps –

A flight of steps, part rock-cut, part constructed of drystone, leads down the cliff face to the foot of Cora Linn. A rock-cut step near the top of the cliff bears the inscription ‘Designed by Lady Mary Ross 1829’; part of the improvements undertaken by Lady Mary Ross on the Bonnington estate in the early C19th.

Site description

Ruins of C17th beehive-type dovecot, standing on a rock outcrop near the centre of Bonnington Linn, on the river Clyde. The building was substantially altered, probably by Lady Mary Ross in the early C19th, to serve as a viewpoint overlooking the waterfall. Access to the rock was from the west bank of the river, by way of a footbridge, initially wooden, but later replaced by one of iron. Depicted in several drawings and prints, sometimes as a crenellated tower.

Forested land of uncertain extent around Carluke and Mauldslie, being a royal demesne, in medieval time. Later records from 1559 refer to a ‘park’. Noted by Hamilton 1710 as much improved, with ‘great and convenient gardens’ and an avenue to the Clyde. Ross 1773 shows ‘Malsly’ with an indication of planting. Forrest marks a parkland landscape with rectangular tree-lined parks to the north-east. Forrest 1816, landscape also seen on OS 1858. Robert Adam House of 1790s with 1860 baronial additions by David Bryce. OS 1909 shows coal pit just within north eastern boundary of the tree-lined parks. By OS 1954 house demolished and part of parkland occupied by sewage works, though some landscape elements such as offices and walled garden unaffected.

Site description

The wood is recorded as a source of timber for shipbuilding and other purposes in the late C15th and early-to-mid C16th. Camnethan is noted as name only by Pont c.1595, and on Blaeu 1654, based on Pont. Wood noted by Baillie ND c.1650. Coventry 2006 talks of a C17th house, replacing an earlier tower, burnt down in 1810. Hamilton 1710 speaks of the house being “…pleasantly sited in the midst of great gardens and woods, and in a fruitful soil”, with “…great plenty of wood”. Roy 1750 shows an extensive and well-ordered landscape with the house, mains farm, gardens, plantations, avenue and tree-lined parks. The landscape is seen as well wooded on Ross 1773 and Forrest 1816. Gothic revival house rebuilt to designs by J. Gillespie Graham c.1819. OS 1858 shows extensive orchards on each side of the core policies, and a small colliery to the north-east. Groome 1880 describes the house as being in “charming grounds, at the ravine of Hall Gill”. With ruination of the house in the late C20th, the grounds are now neglected and degraded. Noted as birthplace of Sir Walter Scott’s biographer J.G. Lockhart.

Wood of uncertain extent from which timber is known to have been taken in the C16th.. Pont 1595 depicts substantial four-storey tower house with bartizans and some associated planting. Blaeu shows this, too, though with no indication of enclosure. Wood noted by Baillie c.1650. Original tower house supposed to date from C14th or C15th. Description of c.1650 quoted in Mitchell talks of Stonebyres as one of the ‘principal houses’ of the county, of its woods, and of the ‘Black Hill above Stanebires’. Large enclosures and wood noted by Hamilton 1710. Roy c.1750 depicts a large designed landscape centred on a group of buildings, comprising walled and tree-lined enclosures, formal plantations, and natural woodland stretching down to the bank of the River Clyde, names ‘Woodhouse’ to north, ‘Woodyett’ to south. House and landscape recorded by Ross 1773 and by Forrest 1816 who marks ‘Byrewood’ and ‘Woodyate’. House extended c.1844 by architect John Baird. Landscape reached maximum extent in mid C19th as seen on OS 1858 and OS 1909, incorporating Black Hill and Stonebyres Mains. House was remodelled again c.1910 by W. C. Anderson (1967) notes coppice wood of oak, alder and birch advertised for sale in 1790s. House and associated planting noted by Ross 1773 and by Forrest 1816. New house by William Burn c.1830, with bridge, walled garden, offices, parkland, gate lodges, kennels etc. seen on OS 1858, OS 1910 and OS 1954. F. 016 Cleghorn (House)

Site description

Coventry 2006 suggests that a house or castle of the Lockhart family may date back to C15th. A three storey tower house with two conical towers or turrets is depicted by Pont c.1595. House noted by Blaeu, with ‘mils’ nearby, but no planting. Wood noted by Baillie ND c.1650. Roy c.1750 shows a substantial village of 20-25 houses, with a small block of planting to the east, and four tree-lined enclosures to the south, alongside the outline of the Roman Camp. Ross shows the house with associated planting. Forrest (1773) shows an extensive and well-planted landscape with large enclosures surrounding the mansion house. The house, offices gate lodge etc. are seen on the OS 1858, OS 1909 and OS 1954. Groome 1880 describes the house as ‘an old but comfortable edifice surrounded by a finely wooded park … [including] a romantic ravine along the course of the Mouse Water’. The house was demolished in the mid-to-late C20th, (date uncertain) though some offices survive as part of Cleghorn farm

Site description

House and landscape at the confluence of the River Avon with the River Clyde. Groome notes that lands were formerly associated with Kelso Abbey. Pont c.1595 shows a small (?) two or three storey tower, with associated planting, reproduced by Blaeu 1654 as ‘Ros’. ‘Good woods and gardens’ noted by Hamilton 1710. Roy c.1750 shows house, walled garden, plantations and tree-lined enclosures, also seen on Forrest 1816. By OS 1859 the eastern part of the landscape was crossed by the Caledonian Railway on a large embankment, built c.1856. By OS 1909 the Ross Colliery has developed, alongside Ross Junction, and the Haughhead junction with Hamilton and Fernigair Branch Railway. By OS 1954 Ross colliery had closed, while Ross Junction has become a marshalling yard. Mansion house and western part of the policies survived more or less intact until the construction of the M74 Hamilton by-pass in the 1960s, which has divided the house and core policies from the south parkland.

Modest mid-C16th tower house with C18th and C19th additions. Woods and gardens noted by Hamilton 1710. House recorded by Roy c.1750 with a small amount of associated planting. The house was burned in the 1980s, but has been rebuilt.

Name recorded by Roy c.1750 as one of several farmsteads on the east bank of the River Clyde. Naming confusing on Forrest 1816, which marks Stewart Hall close to site. This name does not appear on any other map. Terraced garden with early C19th octagonal gazebo. On OS 1858 Orchard House appears at the foot of an area of parkland named Swinsey Hill. By OS 1908 this has been planted with trees and laid out with winding footpaths. This path layout has largely gone by OS 1954, with some addition orchard planting. Present house early C20th with later additions.

Iconic waterfall on the River Clyde, first in series of four which a jointly referred to as The Falls of Clyde, with Cora Linn (CAVLP 025) and Stonebyres Linn (CAVLP 116) . Much admired by tourists from C18th, often painted and drawn by artists interested in picturesque scenery. The flow of water over the falls was much reduced by the construction of a tilting weir above the waterfall (CAVLP 117), and the diversion of the water to Bonnington Hydro-Electric Power Station (CAVLP 118), on the east bank of the river below Cora Linn, in 1925-1927. Amenity Committee appointed at the time to minimise environmental impact on the falls.

Large C15th castle and single subsidiary building depicted by Pont c.1595 and Blaeu 1654, standing within fairly spacious wooded and enclosed park on the west ban of the River Nethan. Baillie c.1650 describes Craig Nethan one of several ‘principal houses’ in Lanarkshire. Noted by Hamilton 1710 as almost surrounded by gardens and woods, ‘a very odd seat’, there is little by way of planting or other features to be seen on Roy c.1750. Groome 1880 notes that association with Sir Walter Scott’s Tillietudlem. Ross 1773 notes the castle with surrounding woods, while Forrest records a house of Craignethan - alongside ‘castle in ruins’. OS 1858 and later maps show castle ruins, roofed buildings to the west, various enclosures and woodland.

Presumably superseded by Garrion Bridge, marked by Forrest 1816 as ‘New Bridge’, reputedly opened 1818.

Pont 1595 and Blaeu 1654 (based on Pont) both show an enclosed and well wooded park surrounding what Pont depicts a three- or four-storey tower with cap-house. Roy does not name the house, but depicts large tree-lined enclosures. Ross 1773 marks associated planting, while Forrest 1816, notes wooded policies with tree-lined parks and gate lodge. OS 1858 shows typical estate with mansion house, offices etc. Additions to mansion by David Bryce 1864, who may have added south and east gate-lodges seen on OS 1909. Estate sold c.1920 (?). East lodge gone by OS 1954. Mansion house demolished 1957. Name and much of the planting has disappeared from modern OS maps, though dovecot noted by WoSAS, photographed 1979.

Site description

Estate may once have been part of neighbouring lands of Auchtygemmel. Glenane given as alternative name by Greenshields 1864. Farmstead ‘The Carse’ recorded by Roy c.1750. House appears as Kerse on Ross 1773 with small amount of associated planting. Also recorded by Forrest 1816 with more extensive landscape including walled garden and gate lodge. Much the same layout is seen on OS 1858, OS 1909 and OS 1954. OS 2006 shows extensive mixed broadleaved and coniferous planting over much of the estate, though this in not seen on recent aerial photograph which shows that mansion house, offices, core policy planting and gate lodge survive. Greenshields 1864 attributes design of present mansion house c.1857 to Glasgow architect William Spence.

House built on part of Lanark Muir for physician Dr. William Smellie, first seen on Roy c.1750 within a rectangular landscape comprising six tree-lined parks and a very small plantation. A little planting also seen on Ross 1773. Castellated front added to 1740s mansion for William Honeyman. Forrest 1816 shows a parkland landscape, with kitchen garden to the west of the house. By OS 1858 there is a loch to the east of the house, and an ice house to the north, while the Caledonian Railway Lanark Branch Line (CAVLP 045) and Douglas Branch Line (CAVLP 047) sweep round to the south. Structure planting seen on OS 1909, by which time the house is recorded as being an RC Orphanage. Situation little changed by OS 1954, by which time the house is named Smyllum Park School, with new St.Mary’s RC School to west of walled garden. After falling into decay from 1970s, the house was restored by the Burrell Company in early 2000s. Southern parkland with some mature planting appears to survive, while northern part of landscape has been built over with new housing.

Roy c.1750 marks two neighbouring farmsteads as ‘Homhead’ and ‘The Home’ with unenclosed rig cultivation about them. House said to be dated 1808. House and park beside River Avon first recorded on Forrest 1816. House, small riverside walled garden and fairly featureless park seen on OS 1909. Reduced park, though with additional parkland planting seen on OS 1909. Although OS 1954 does not mark parkland ass such, planting remains. A few parkland trees, walled garden and minimal boundary planting still evident on recent aerial photographs. Groome describes an ‘estate with a mansion’ and ‘three tall upright stones, variously regarded as Caledonian remains, monuments of ancient noblemen, and as monuments of martyrs’.

Ross 1773 marks the name only. Present mansion house dated 1776. Forrest 1816 shows the mansion standing within an area of parkland. Substantial villa of 1904 designed by J. Jerdan & Son, built on site of earlier mansion. Close to land noted by Forrest as site of ‘Iron & Limestone Quarry’. Earlier mansion first seen on OS 1858, within compact parkland landscape surrounded by boundary belt, immediately to west of village of Braidwood. Described by F. Groome 1880 ‘a handsome modern edifice’. OS 1858 and OS 1910 mark various quarries and other works in the immediate vicinity, some within the boundary of the designed landscape. Groome 1882 states that ‘Braidwood House occupies a commanding site overhanging the Vale of Clyde, and is a handsome modern edifice’.

Hamilton 1710 describes ‘Milbourn’ as a convenient house. Name is not recorded on maps until Forrest 1816, which shows house of c.1780 and small designed landscape. Millburn House shown on OS 1859 with small park, boundary planting, offices etc. with a series of terraces overlooking the Dalserf Burn, which includes features marked as ‘Habby’s Leap’ and ‘Ladies’ Plum’. OS 1909 records additional planting, orchard to the north, and policy planting to the west, extending to neighbouring Category ‘B’ listed Auldton. This is slightly reduced by OS 1954.

Substantial three or four-storey tower house with cap-house and surrounding wall depicted by Pont c.1595. House with associated planting also seen on Blaeu 1654. Coventry 2006 suggests that this tower house was demolished c.1700, and replaced by a new mansion. Roy c.1750 depicts house enclosures and planting, possibly with orchards. House noted by Ross 1773, and shown with some associated planting by Forrest 1816. House, extended in 1894, with office and grounds seen on OS 1858, OS 1909 and OS 1954. Mansion house reportedly demolished 1963, though gate-lodge and offices survive together with mature planting.

NS 828 503) appear to have developed from an earlier and much smaller tile works seen on OS 1858 within in part of the Hallcraig designed landscape. RCAHMS suggests that the tile works operated c.1886-c.1919, and the brickworks from c.1888-1947. Both works are seen on OS 1909, but have disappeared by OS 1954, with much of the site now beneath the Carluke Golf Course. (See also CAVLP 077 and 078)

077 Hallcraig

Site description

C18th designed landscape, sacrificed to industry, subsequently reclaimed as golf course. Name only appears on Ross 1773, just to the north of Jock’s Burn. House, enclosure and orchard seen on Roy c.1750. Forrest 1816 marks a mansion house close to the burn, with a landscape to the north composed of areas of parkland defined by tree-belts. Designed landscape is clearly marked on the OS 1858, with offices, dovecot, walled garden tree-clumps etc., though with a small tile works in the north eastern section of parkland. OS 1913 appears to show the tree-belts unplanted, and the earlier tile works replaced by more extensive Hallcraig Brick Works (approx. NS 828 503) and Hallcraig Tile Works (approx NS 829 511), with part of the landscape affected by mineral extraction, see CAVLP 077. By OS 1954 only the offices are marked, with the mansion house and brickworks gone, save for some spoil heaps. Part of the landscape is shown as golf course, reportedly with origins in 1894. Site description

Monument in the form of an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar erected in 1956 on the site of, Miltonhead, birthplace of surveyor and antiquarian William Roy, widely regarded as founder of the Ordnance Survey. House marked on Roy 1750, and by Forrest 1816, but not seen or named on subsequent OS maps. William Roy’s father and grandfather both served as factor to the Hamiltons of Hallcraig (CAVLP 077), and his uncle as factor to the Lockharts of Lee.

Founded in 1892 on the site of the racecourse close to now-demolished Hamilton Palace, the golf club moved to its present location in the Hamilton High Parks in 1925, where Scottish golf course designer James Braid was commissioned to lay out the course around the site of a house or farmstead named Riccarton. This name is noted by Roy c.1750, by Ross 1773, by Forrest 1816, as well as on OS 1858, OS 1909, and OS 1954, with the present club house complex apparently incorporating the earlier house and outbuildings. Price 1992 described Riccarton as ‘both a well kept and a challenging course’. Grid Reference is for golf club house.

Public park developed on sloping riverside farmland site to the north west of the village of Stonehouse, on land purchased by the local council, thanks to a gift from Stonehouse-born industrialist Alexander Hamilton, who opened the park in 1925. Incorporates bandstand from 1911 International Exhibition in Kelvingrove Park, acquired from Glasgow Town Council in 1924. Park used to boast large boating pond and 150-foot long chute or slide, set up in 1933, but dismantled c.1967.

One of the larger and longest-lived brick and tile works in the study area, said by RCAHMS 1993 to have operated from c.1897-1980. Works seen to be larger and clay-pits more extensive by OS 1954. Recent aerial view shows site cleared of all structures, covered with scrubby woodland, with some water-filled clay pits.

Site description

The name is first seen on Forrest 1816 as a modest house or settlement by the River Nethan, with ‘coal pit’ and ‘coal work’ to the north OS 1858 shows a house of some stature with a small area of garden ground between the river and the Lesmahagow Branch Railway (CAVLP 043), with several fields to the north and east subdivided by narrow tree-belts, and a number of coal-pits nearby. By OS 1909 the house has a gate-lodge, with the area to the north now marked as Auchenheath Colliery (CAVLP 088), also the Clydesdale Tile and Quarry works within one of the northern fields (CAVLP 090). OS 1954 marks the house, along with Auchenheath Mine, and the site of the brick and tile works more extensive, but abandoned.

Site description

Long-established coal mine, first seen as ‘coal pit and ‘coal work’ on Forrest 1816. ‘Coal Pit’ and ‘Lime Kiln’ are noted on OS 1858. Groome 1880 states that the mine was noted for ‘fine cannel coal’, used for gas generation. By OS 1909 the site was referred to as ‘Auchenheath Colliery’,85 and by OS 1954 as ‘Auchenheath Mine’. The mine was in private ownership following nationalisation in 1947, but closed in 1951, according to Oglethorpe 2006. See also entry on Auchenheath House (CAVLP 087) which served as mine-owner’s house.

RCAHMS 1993 notes that this works operated from c.1852 to 1970s, after which the site was cleared. In fact, OS map evidence suggests that the original tile works lay a little to the north-west, as seen on OS 1858 (see CAVLP 089), but that it had moved to this site before OS 1909. At this time, there\was a tramway link to Netherton Lime Works (CAVLP 086). The works appears on OS 1954, though the tramway link to Netherton Lime Works had gone by this time. Recent aerial view shows works and large storage yard.

Named on Pont c.1595 and Blaeu 1654, it appears as a substantial house with associated planting on Ross 1773. Roy c.1750 also shows a house of some stature, with riverside woodland to the north and east, and hedged or tree-lined enclosures to the west. House noted by Forrest 1816. Site also noted as farmhouse on OS 1859, OS 1909 and OS 1954. However, 1959 report notes building in disrepair, with more recent maps and aerial views suggesting that only ruins remain.

Site description

Site of high stature house and designed landscape on the east bank of the River Avon, just west of Larkhall. Pont c.1595 and Blaeu 1654 show a wooded and enclosed park, the latter with three storey tower house adjacent with the name ‘Bramhil’ below, but which may represent Raploch. Baillie lists it among the ‘principal houses’ of Lanarkshire. The name does not appear on Roy c.1750, or on Ross 1773. However, Raploch is noted by Forrest 1816, and appears on OS 1859 as a farm, embracing ‘dovecot’ and ‘site of chapel’ associated with the earlier house. Both of these have now gone, and the site appears to have been built over by new housing. House site only noted, as extent of landscape unclear without further research.

096 Carfin [House]

Site description

The name first appears on Forrest 1816. OS 1858 shows a mansion house and offices at the southern extremity of a large and rather thinly planted park. This is seen with new gate-lodge and riverside approach from the north on OS 1909, also planting to the south and east. By OS 1954 the park is treeless, and the northern half is built over by a large structure, possibly glasshouses. More recent maps and aerial view show this structure gone, and the northern half of the park now covered with housing. The southern half of the park has now been redeveloped as Valley International Park, with play facilities and miniature railway.

Large riverside corn mill complex on east bank of River Clyde, just upstream of Garrion Bridge. Pont c.1595 and Blaeu 1654 show a house as ‘Ghearm’. Roy marks ‘Garion’, with buildings on the riverside, while Ross records ‘Garin’. Forrest 1816 is the first to show a mill, also marked on OS 1858 as a small building, ‘Garrion Mill (corn)’. Seen as somewhat bigger on OS 1909 and OS 1954, the mill was photographed in 1969, but has since been almost entirely demolished. The footings of the mill and the weir which served it would appear to survive.

Iconic waterfall on the River Clyde, fourth in a series of falls jointly referred to as The Falls of Clyde. Much admired by tourists from C18th, often painted and drawn by artists interested in picturesque scenery. The flow of water over the falls was much reduced by the construction of a tilting weir above the waterfall, and the diversion of the water to Stonebyres Hydro Electric Power Station in 1925-1927. Amenity Committee appointed at the time to minimise environmental impact on the falls.

Marked as a settlement by Pont 1595 and Blaeu 1654. Roy 1750 records ‘Brownlie’, and Ross 1775 ‘Burnlee’, with associated planting. By Forrest 1816, the landscape has of the estate has taken on its present form, with house at head of a park leading down to the River Clyde, flanked by orchards, and several rectangular fields bounded by tree-belts uphill to the north-east, echoing those seen on neighbouring Mauldslie (CAVLP 010). This is the landscape seen on OS 1858 and later maps, though OS 1909 shows original house as East Brownlee, with west Brownlee to the north, and Shawfield /Brownlee Collieries (CAVLP 127) on the northern edge of the parkland. OS 1954 shows these collieries closed, leaving only spoil tips.
