Welcome to the October issue of ClubJournal.

It’s election time once again as the Union’smembers vote for their Presidential andNEC representatives. As you’ll see from thetimeline on the front page, the nominationpapers went out to clubs in September andwill be returned by October 9.

Ballot papers will be issued next month tobe returned to Head Office by December 7with the ballot count and official release ofthe results taking place on December 9 and10 respectively.

It has certainly been a busy time at HeadOffice recently and I’m delighted toannounce that we have produced several HRdocuments which will be of invaluable helpto our clubs in dealing with staff issues.

As well as the Club Staff Handbook, wehave also produced a Club StewardContract, a Bar Manager Contract, aBar/Cleaning Staff Contract and Terms andConditions booklets for Bar/Cleaning Staffand Temporary Bar/Cleaning Staff.

The Handbook is priced at £5; £2.50 for

each Contract; £1.50 for each Terms andConditions document.

These have all been fully updated tocurrent legislative requirements andproduced to a high, professional standard –see page 15 for more details.

We have also produced new EducationWorkbooks and these will be unveiled at theBranch Secretary Event taking place at HeadOffice this month.

George JardineGosforth Empireand Social Club issad to announcethe recent passingaway of GeorgeJardine at the ageof 54. An activegolfer, pool andsnooker player who loved thehorses, George had served on theclub committee since 2009. Heorganised the internal dominoesleague and was also Chairman ofthe regional snooker league. Georgewill be sadly missed by his familyand many friends and colleagues atthe club.

Charlie ElderIt is with greatsadness thatGosforth Empireand Social Clubannounce thepassing away ofCharlie Elder atthe age of 82. Hewas a much loved and committedmember and official of the club,having served for many years invarious positions, including that ofClub President during the past sixyears. Well known not only in hisown club but throughout the wholeof the No6 region, Charlie will begreatly missed by all who had thepleasure of knowing him. Charliewas also the uncle of GeorgeJardine and was greatly saddenedby his loss.

The Soldiers’ Charity is the Army’sNational Charity supporting soldiers,veterans and their families and the BigCurry is now in its seventh year as thecharity’s flagship fundraising initiative.

Eric TurnerBexleyheath Working Men’s Clubin Kent sadly announces that EricTurner passed away on July 29,2015 at the age of 90.

Eric was an active member ofthe club for an astonishing 72years as well as serving on thecommittee for many yearsalongside his father andbrothers.

Eric would always keep his eyeson the club balance sheet andinvariably had something to sayat the AGM.

Eric and his family have longsupported the club and long maythey continue to do so.

Eric will be sadly missed by allwho knew him.

OBITUARY

Sheffield’s Owlerton Greyhound Stadiumhosted the Dransfields CIU Racenight onTuesday, September 22 with Union membersenjoying a total of 14 races at the iconicvenue.

As part of the night, members madecontributions to Macmillan Cancer Supportvia local charity fundraiser John Burkhill.

On Saturday, August 8, the ParadiseWorking Men’s Club, Burnley, entertainedthe local community with their second‘Lark in the Park’ event following on fromthe hugely successful inaugural eventstaged last year.

The club’s car park was transformedinto an outdoor music festival with anumber of up-and-coming live bandsperforming on the stage to the delight ofthe crowd who were enjoying someglorious sunny weather.

The event was a real family affair andchildren were able to amuse themselves byplaying on a 35-foot inflatable galleon,

climbing a velcro ‘fly wall’ or seekingtreasure by having a bash at the treasurechest pinata.

The event was brought to a close by theheadliners, Yorkshire rock band Roadkill.

Once the live music was over, aspectacular fireworks display at 9.30pmmarked the conclusion of the 2015 ‘Larkin the Park’ after which time the revellersmoved inside the club to take part in akaraoke session.

Club Vice-President Yvette Johnson wasthe chief organiser of a great event whichlooks set to become a much-anticipatedannual fixture in the local diary.

Paul DingleyIt is with muchregret thatRushden TownBand Clubannounces thedeath of a long-serving SecretaryPaul Dingley. Paul passed away inthe early hours of Friday August 7 atthe age of 70 years. In his time asSecretary Paul dedicated manyyears to RTBC and between himself,the President and the rest of theCommittee, took the club to greatheights. Paul will be sadly missed byhis family and his many friends andcolleagues at the club.

Fred GibbinsCIU ClubKenningtonregretfullyannounces thatclub stalwart FredGibbins haspassed away atthe age of 73. The club raised fundsin his memory for the AlzheimersFund, donating £2,250 to the charity,as well as the Support Our Parascharity, Fred having been a formermember of the Parachute Regiment.

Roy MarriotHasland WMC wish to announcethe death of Roy Marriot. Roy joinedthe committee in May 1966 and wason the DerbyshireBranch from 1979to 2013. Roy wasPresident ofHasland WMCfrom 1993-2006.He retired fromthis committee in2006. He received numerousdiplomas and badges for his serviceto the CIU and received his goldmedal for 31 years of service. He alsoorganised many trips to the CIUhomes at Broadstairs, Langlandsand Saltburn where he made manyfriends in the clubs in those areas.Roy, a great clubman, will be sorelymissed by all his family and friends.

Ewloe Social Club in Queensferry,Flintshire, has been named as the WelshClub of the Year by the Campaign for RealAle (CAMRA).

The award is in recognition of the club’sdedication to stocking local real ale on threehand pumps.

espsite the closure of several clubsaround the West Midlands area inrecent years, the Remembrance

Club in Castle Bromwich on the outskirts ofBirmingham continues to go from strengthto strength.

The club boasts 1,000-plus members andis managed by a strong and resourcefulManagement Committee under theleadership of Club President John Ford.

Indeed, such is the attraction of the clubthat it has a waiting list of prospectivemembers and each new member is vetted bythe Club Committee.

Going back to the beginning, theRemembrance Club was formed in 1922 bylocal people as a British Legion club andmoved to its current location in 1947 whenLord Bradford agreed to rent the club asolidly built four-roomed 19th Centuryhouse which overlooked open countrysideon the edge of Castle Bromwich.

The club purchased the lease in 1952 forthe sum of £4,500 and in 1962 becameaffiliated to the CIU. Former Club SecretaryLen Spiers says: “This was the best thing thatever happened for this club and we would

not be where we are today if we had notbecome affiliated.”

Following affiliation, the membershipbegan to increase to such an extent that theclub needed to extend its premises. To helpraise the funds for the extension, eachmember contributed a pound apiece topurchase a brick.

Since then, the club has been furtherimproved and updated. Club security isregarded as of paramount importance soeach member is issued with a key card whichbears their photograph and gives themaccess. The Committee has also invested inCCTV cameras which cover the entranceand car park areas.

The Club Officers today comprise ofPresident John Ford, Vice-President MickShowering, Secretary Val McConnell,Assistant Secretary Lesley Burrows andTreasurer June Bradley. They have nowworked together for a number of years,resulting in an exceptionally well-run andwell-appointed club.

The club’s wide array of activities are wellsupported by members and the full air-conditioned Concert Room, which seats 200

people, is utilised most weekday eveningswith bingo and carpet bowls taking place inthis impressive space.

On Saturday and Sunday evenings, liveentertainment takes over the Concert Roomwith a variety of crowd-pulling acts, bookedby Vice-President Mick Showering, taking tothe stage.

The hub of the club is the large and well-furnished Lounge which also provides liveentertainment on Thursday and Sundayevenings.

Other facilties enjoyed by membersinclude a bar with large screen television.

Club Steward Alan Jephcott and his wifeJean are integral to the success of the cluband their stewardship helps to ensure thatthe club is packed throughout the week.

One particular noteworthy success is theSunday Carvery for which booking is nowessential. Most recently, the club has startedoffering a Wednesday evening menu whichis becoming increasingly popular.

Justifiably proud of their facilities, the clubwould be delighted to give a warm welcometo any CIU members who find themselves inthe Birmingham area.

We’re holding a Fireworks Nightparty next month at our club so isthere anything we should be

To make sure that Public Liability Coverremains fully in force you will need tocomply with the policy conditions of yourinsurance.

Below is a list of tips we have compileddesigned to help protect you during bonfireand firework displays, but please do checkthe specifics of your policy before holdingan event.

• Use experts – Certain fireworks may onlybe used if you have a qualified pyrotechnictechnician to co-ordinate the display. Thisco-ordinator will be required to hold validPublic Liability insurance in respect of thisactivity.

Our club is thinking aboutgetting free solar panels installedon the roof but I’ve heard that

the Government is changing the subsidiesfor solar power – will this affect us?

Amy Alvarez, Marketing and CommercialManager of CIU Preferred Supplier SmartEnergy, replies: We can still offer free solar panels to CIUclubs for a limited time with theGovernment’s proposed cuts to the Feed-inTariff scheme due to come into effect inJanuary 2016.

At the moment there are no payments asthe solar is completely free to the club. Ifyou qualify you have no costs – not evenmaintenance costs – so it really is absolutelyfree. For example, we have just installed freefunded panels at Dunstable United ServicesClub in Bedford and they are expected tosave £2,300 in the first year with theirelectricity spend going from 12.49 penceper kilowatt to 6.3 pence per kilowatt.

How can it be free and is there a catch?There is presently an opportunity to installfree Solar PV at your Club. The system willbe paid for by a third party trust fund whichin turn gets paid over time from the

Government’s ‘feed-in’ tariff. Depending on the package that suits you

best determines how much free electricity isgenerated for the club but regardless of yourchoice the club is guaranteed to reduce itsoverall electricity costs with the installationof free solar panels.

How realistic is our chance of getting it?You still have a very good chance of takingadvantages of the scheme until the end ofthis year whilst the Purchase PowerAgreement (PPA) tariffs are still very good.

What do we need to meet the criteria?You will need to own the building and youwill need your club to have a Land Registrynumber, 12 months of electric bills and aclean mortgage with no loans against thebuilding in order for your application tosail through within a four-week timeframe.

Arbitration advice set for update

The Union will be revising its arbitration guidance andwill be arranging pilot schemes in conjunction withspecialist John Vanderwolfe in order to help clubs withany disciplinary, employment or contractual issuesthey may be facing.

The Union’s arbitration service enables memberclubs to fulfil their obligations required under their rulebook at a minimal cost - something which clubs mayfind difficult and costly to provide independently.

The annual Dransfields CIU CharityRaceday takes place on Saturday,November 14 at Wetherby Racecourse.

This is one of the highlights of the CIU’ssporting calendar with clubs from all overthe country heading to Yorkshire to enjoya superb day’s hospitality in the Union’sexclusive marquee adjacent to theracetrack.

It’s also a bumper day for charity withthe 2014 event raising over £3,500 for theCIU Education Programme thanks todonations from Wetherby Racecourse itselfand their official caterers for every Unionmember who attends.

Indeed, some 1,843 members attendedthe 2014 event with Farsley WMC

bringing a mighty contingent of 257racegoers along.

Hopes are high that this year’sattendance for the seven-raceevent will top the 2,000 markwhich would be a major boostfor the Union’s nominatedcharity.

Following last year’s event,Union President GeorgeDawson CMD said: “It wasmarvellous to see so many clubsgetting behind our CharityRacday and raising a record sumfor the CIU Education Programme.

“The event is going from strength tostrength and I’m determined that we

should continue to build on this successwith the aim of bringing over 2,000 Unionmembers to Wetherby in the 2015 event.”

The Queen has answered approximately3.5 million pieces of correspondenceduring her reign. As a great ambassadorfor Britain and the Commonwealth shehosts on average 30,000 people each yearattending Royal Garden Parties orinvestitures, usually held at BuckinghamPalace.

Representing England by travelling tomany different countries during her longreign, Queen Elizabeth has received andgreeted a staggering 1.5 million guestsand still entertains a substantial numberof dignitaries and heads of statethroughout the year.

The Queen is reported to have 200hundred racing pigeons housed in thegrounds at her Sandringham estate andlikes to receive regular updates from herestate managers on their wellbeing.

There are 1,000 working clocks in the royalresidences. However, the Queen’s ownpiper has the responsibility to play thebagpipes beneath the Queen’s windowevery morning as her personal alarm tostart her day.

Her grandson and the heir to the Britishthrone Prince William recently stated hefelt he was privileged to have the Queen ashis role model for a life of service to thecountry.

At the end of each year our family alwayslook forward to that day in Decemberwhen we all get together to settle down infront of the TV after eating the turkey andall feeling very full, to watch the Queen’sspeech.
