Italian Ex-Pro Bike Rider launches Development Squad of Local Young Talent
Oxford, Monday the 21st of September, 2009
Cycling as a means of transport is hugely popular in Oxford, and many enjoy weekend rides in the picturesque surroundings. At a more competitive level Britain has become a well respected cycling nation. Not only on the track but also in road events and triathlon.
Bradley Wiggins was 4th in this years Tour de France, and Nicole Cooke won the road race at the 2008 Olympics.
However it is very difficult for young riders to gain experience and develop as the UK does not have a culture of road racing as a youth sport such as there exists in France and Italy.
Flavio Zappi, settled in Oxford 12 years ago with his English wife and two sons. He is well known within Oxford for his Zappi's Cafe in Walton street and having managed Blanc for many years prior to that.
Up until recently, Flavio's best kept secret was he raced as a professional cyclist based in Italy during the 80s, and recently has been successfully mentoring two young riders throughout the 2009 season. Flavio raced the Giro d'Italia 3 times and many of the celebrated one day classics, such as the Paris - Roubaix and Milan - Sanremo.
Flavio's wants to provide an aspirational goal for other young potential cyclists and also create an inclusive cycling environment for everyone that wants to enjoy riding a bike.
His riders have successfully competed in races in England and in Belgium, and have recently spent a couple of weeks training and racing with a development squad in Northern Italy, this was made possible through one of Flavio's contacts from his professional career.
For the 2010 season he has expanded his roster to five under 23 riders and plans to make an impact on the premier calendar series alongside established teams. He hopes to find support from the local community.
