As of 1 June 2015, the Classification, Labelling and Packaging regulations (CLP) replaced the previ-ous 2009 Chemicals, Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply (CHIP). All chemical products manufactured from June 1st must be labelled in accordance with the new CLP regulations.

However, any products produced prior to this date and labelled according to CHIP can be supplied until 1 June 2017. There is no deadline (other than usual expiry) given for stock which is already on a customer‘s site: these can safely be used.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

WHAT IS CLP AND WHY HAS IT BEEN INTRODUCED?Before 1 June, there were no consistent international regulations or laws which identified and/or classified the hazardous properties of chemicals such as cleaning products or which governed how the information of these hazards were communicated to users (e.g. through labels and safety data sheets). This has caused inconsistencies and discrepancies in the way chemicals are labelled i.e. the same product classed as toxic in one country and not toxic in other countries. This also caused problems with international trade.

To solve this, the United Nations (UN) has developed a ‘Globally Harmonised System’ (GHS) on classification and labelling to help protect people, the environment and facilitate trade.

CHANGES IN LABELLING REGULATIONS

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?By law, Zenith Hygiene Group plc are required to ensure that all chemicals produced comply with the new international regulations.

NEW PICTOGRAMSThe biggest change you will notice is that the pictograms have changed from orange and black squares to red and white diamonds. A full breakdown of what this means can be found on page 3 and page 4.

FORMULATIONS HAVE NOT CHANGED. JUST THE RULES.The CLP regulation introduces stricter rules for classifying chemicals. As a result, you will notice that more products will be classified as hazardous or will have increased classifications applied.

There have been instances however where it has been possible for us to re-formulate a product, at no detriment to product performance. The aim of this being a reduced hazard classifcation under CLP. Thus minimising the impact of the legislation on the product range we provide to you.

WHAT TO EXPECTWe will be rolling out the new labelling on products manufactured from the 1st June. You will notice the new pictograms. There is a transition time to utlilise products already in the supply chain with existing labels so don’t worry about removing these from your site.

Changes in hazard rating on your product rangeThe attached sheet sets out any changes in hazard classification.
