For the first time in its 20-plus year operation, the holiday relief program for Cloverdale’s neediest residents found itself running short on donations in the food drive’s final week. Hampers hit the mark

By Jennifer LangLast week’s urgent plea for help by the

Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program was called o almost as soon as it had gone out, when organizers announced enough donations had come in to meet this year’s need.

A last-minute rush of donations and support saw the program through for an-other year.

“We’re ok now,” said Kevin Lunder, who leads the non-denominational holi-day relief program along with wife Trish. “We’ve been able to complete the ham-pers.”

Some 800 boxes were assembled by volunteers and ready for pick up on Dec. 15. Recipi-ents included 250 Cloverdale families with 260 children under the age of 18, Lunder said.

e contents dif-fered slightly from previous years, but the organization was able to meet the need.

For the rst time in its 20-plus year operation, the holiday relief program for Cloverdale’s neediest residents found itself running short on donations in the food drive’s nal week.

On Dec. 12, representatives issued a call for donations and cash from the com-munity, fearing a shortfall of supplies, particularly personal care items, baby food, gi s for teenagers and cash used to purchase perishable and non-perishable food supplies to top up the hampers.

“Some may think of hampers as cute little baskets with a bow on top, but we o er each family several large boxes full in the hopes that it will get them through a couple of months,” program representa-

tive Holly Zonneveld said.Confusion over the donation deadline

Donations from schools were down be-tween 30 and 35 per cent. “It was huge. I started to panic,” he said. “ e applica-tions were still rolling in.”

Monetary donations were also down, but fortunately, the situation reversed once the alarm rang out and support-ers like Jen Temple of the Trademark Group of Compa-nies, who manages Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre, responded with a corporate donation and other assistance.

By Jennifer LangHeritage rail enthusi-

asts have lost a treasured colleague and friend.

Frank Horne, a for-mer BC Electric Railway motorman and tireless booster with the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society, has passed away at the age of 90 –  mere months before his dream is to become a reality.

Society secretary Al-len Aubert said Horne was the iconic face of the FVHRS’ ongoing efforts to return a working In-terurban to the original track.

“He was the motorman on the car that we’ve just restored, 1225, so he was really hoping to be able to have another ride,” Aubert said. “He passed away just too early.”

He’d wear a full uni-form for appearances at open houses and events. “He would talk to people and regale them with all the stories,” Aubert said. “He was wonderful.”

His obvious passion for an era of transit sup-posedly thought long gone inspired a large granite statue in downtown Cloverdale created by sculptor Paul Slipper. Horne is depicted in hat and uniform, checking his pocket watch.

But Horne wasn’t a ticket-taker, he was a motor-man, meaning he was a driver/engineer from 1946 to 1951, the sunset years of the line.

A modern suburban commuter’s dream, the In-terurban moved passengers and freight between Vancouver and the Fraser Valley for more than 40 years, providing a vital connection for Surreyites.

More than a decade in the works, the society

plans to launch weekend passenger service in May between Cloverdale and Sullivan Station at 64 Av-enue and 152 Street.

Last month, work be-gan on a replica Clover-dale Station, where pas-sengers will board Car 1225, poised to make its first trip on the original line in over 60 years. The exterior walls and roof are to be in place by the end of the year.

Until his health start-ed to fail him, Horne worked alongside other volunteers with the FVHRS on the restora-tion of Car 1225. He worked on the wood-work surrounding the safety glass.

His memory of his de-cades on the Interurban made him a living en-cyclopedia for the other volunteers.

He drove both cars 1225 and 1304, which is

the focus on ongoing restoration efforts.A fascination with railways ran in the family – his

father was a motorman at Marpole Station. After the interurbans were phased out in the

1950s in favour of busses, Horne stuck with trains, working as a railway foreman for another 31 years.

It was his dream to see the inaugural run of a re-stored BCER car in Cloverdale.

“I hope to live long enough to run that thing on the main line,” he told the Surrey Leader in 2010.

“I think they’ll let me run it on the first day. I’ll be very disappointed if they don’t.”

He is survived by his wife, Pearl, children Lynda and Kenneth, six grandchildren and 12 great grand-children.

To the editor;Recently it was in the news

that pigs raised for the pork market on industrial farms in Manitoba are routinely subjected to what anyone would have to admit are cruel practices. It was sickening to see caged neurotic, bloodied and beaten animals treated so inhumanely in their short lives. Industrial farming practices are shamefully car-ried out behind locked doors

while retailers market low prices for these products.

I grew up on a small farm where my parents raised pigs along with chickens and a few sheep and ducks. Our animals usually ended up on the dinner table, but they had a good life while they were maturing. Pigs are animals that love to forage with their snouts, play in water

(and mud!) and they are social and intel-ligent. I would like to remind everyone that the meat on your plate comes from a

living creature that thinks and feels, and must therefore deserve a life without pain or su ering.

I’m sure we can do better as a society than to just accept cur-rent factory farm practices.

 e BCSPCA for instance has

a farm certi cation and food-labelling program dedicated to improving farm animal welfare standards in Canada. You can visit their website and nd qual-ity local meat producers listed there. In the spirit of caring this Christmas, I encourage all to consider a better life for farm animals.

A surprise visit to a local grocery store by Santa Claus’s better half turned heads and warmed the hearts of shoppers young and old, tapping into a clearly under-utilized source of seasonal good will and cheer.

Following a special appearance at Art Knapps Nursery in Port Kells, Mrs. Santa Claus stopped o to pick up a few items for dinner before heading back to the North Pole.

As she entered the grocery store, she was greeted by sta and patrons alike, who cheer-fully said hello and broke into big smiles as they recognized her.

“How are you, Mrs. Claus?” one man in-quired, according to Mrs. Claus, who stopped by e Reporter earlier this week to share her tale. “Oh, hello, Mrs. Santa Claus,” said an-

other. “Hi Mrs. Santa,” added a third shopper, and so on as she made her way through the aisles and perused the produce.

It was a revealing experience for the white-haired lady, decked out in a red dress and white-trimmed cap dur-ing her foray. A er all, she’s used to taking a less public role than her world-traveling husband.

She paid for her groceries and collected her bags, preparing to exit the store. at’s when a young family walked in.

“ ere was a mom, a dad with a babe-in-arms, and a little girl,” Mrs. Claus recalled. e girl exclaimed, “It’s Mrs. Santa Claus, it’s Mrs. Santa Claus!” and immediately

reached out to her idol. “So I gave her a hug and told her to be a good girl,” Mrs. Claus said, de-lighting in the reaction her visit created.

“ e kids just love Mrs. Santa Claus,” she said. “ e children just immediately re-

spond. So do the adults.”Considering Mrs. Claus is not

Library launches book clubs

‘Polar Express’ by donationCloverdale’s historic movie house presents a

special Friday afternoon screening of The Polar Express, a modern Christmas classic.

It’s the Clova Cinema’s annual holiday kick off. Admission for the Dec. 21 presentation of the 2004 animated feature is by donation to the Clova’s Road

to Digital fund. The movie starts at 4 p.m.

The Polar Express is directed by Robert Zemeckis and fea-tures the voice of Tom Hanks.

It’s an animated story of how a boy’s faith in the wonder of

life is rewarded one Christmas Eve when a magi-cal steam train pulls up outside his house and takes him on a mysterious, thrilling journey to the North Pole – home of Santa’s Workshop.

It’s adapted from an illustrated children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg and is breathtaking on the big screen, like a storybook brought to life.

It’s rated PG and may frighten young children.– Cloverdale Reporter

By Jennifer LangMeaning to read more novels and

books in 2013? Perhaps a little structure – and company – will serve as inspiration.

The Cloverdale Library has announced two new book clubs for adults starting up in the new year.

Off the Shelf is aimed at people who

love to read, but have trouble finding the time. The book titles will fit a busy lifestyle. The group meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month, from 7-8 p.m., starting Jan. 30.

Books with Buzz meets on the second Wednesday of the month (afternoons from 1:30 to 2:30), starting Feb. 13. No

matter the genre or format, if it’s in the news, let’s read it, organizers say.

Sign up now for the time and theme that suits your interests the best by calling 604-598-7327 or by emailing [email protected].

Hillcrest patrons pack police car

By Jennifer LangGenerous shoppers

at Hillcrest Village mall helped the Surrey RCMP fill a SUV patrol vehicle several days in a row with donations for the Cloverdale Christ-mas Hamper Program after the call went out that the charity might run short this year.

Members from the Cloverdale community office collected 750 pounds of food on the first day they were there, and the donations keep pouring in.

“It’s been unbeliev-able,” mall manager Jen Temple said. “It’s just been great.”

Local RCMP volun-teers continued their “Pack the Police Car” presence at the mall over the weekend and have promised to keep at it daily to Dec. 24.

The Cloverdale ham-per program has now wrapped up for another year, but the RCMP’s donation drive will con-tinue to Christmas Eve in support of another local cause – the Surrey

Food Bank, which oper-ates year-round.

“They’ve done amaz-ing,” Temple said. “Just yesterday alone they collected $510 in cash.”

The Price Smart Foods at 18710 Fraser Highway is one of three locations where Surrey RCMP have been col-lecting donations for more than a week as part of the 12-Days of Giving in support of local food banks. The RCMP are also at the Save-On-Foods loca-tions at 3033 152 Street

in South Surrey and at 7320 King George Blvd.

The top items request-ed by the Surrey Food Bank include large cans of powdered baby for-mula, canned fish and

meat, healthy breakfast cereals, canned stews, canned vegetables and fruit, wholegrain pasta, pasta sauces, canned and dry soups, and macaroni and cheese.

Giraffe’s death probe finds causeA degenerative brain disease is being blamed for causing the

death of a giraffe at the Aldergrove zoo last month. Jafari is the third giraffe to die at the Greater Vancou-ver Zoo within a year.

Pathologists and zoo experts have now completed their investigation into the 12-year-old male giraffe’s death.

They’ve concluded he died of encephalomalacia, which is caused by toxins in the stomach.

In the cases of ruminants – animals such as cattle, sheep, deer and giraffes – the stomach is a fermenting vat filled with bacteria, independent veterinary pathologist Dr. Chelsea Himsworth said

in a statement. Sometimes, even small changes can cause bacteria to produce toxic substances that can affect the brain.

Greater Vancouver Regional Zoo veterinarian Dr. Bruce Bar-ton said Jafari didn’t suffer.

“Given all the information that we have, Jafari died very quickly and fortunately; there would have been little or no suffering.”

Jafari’s breeding partner and their son died in No-vember 2011.

Necropsy results were inconclusive. The BC SPCA came out to the zoo to investigate

Jafari’s unexpected death, but likely won’t continue looking into the death in light of the necropsy results.

Christmas Wish, by Carrie-Anne

You wake up to the annoying sound of a car horn blearing through your ear drums. Wow. A great start to a cold winter morning. “Eeeek!” Your bedroom door bursts open, and your 6 year old brother happily pounces on you. “It’s Christmas! It’s Christmas!” he squeals. You race down the stairs, seeing that your bright red, sparkly stocking is full of goodies! What happens next? Well, my Christmas wish, is to have lots of snow on Christmas day. When I get downstairs, I would have a nice hot glass of hot chocolate to warm me up for the new day. I would wake up my parents and we would go and open our stockings and Christmas gi s. When we are done, I would put on my thick snow suit and sprint outside with my friends and family and start a snowball ght! We would build showforts and snowmen! at I tell you, would be the best Christmas ever!

Please-o-please by Joshua Div 2My wish for Christmas is for all the poor homeless people and kids to have food and things to play with for just once. Some people with millions of things, please just once donate food and gi s to the poor. So, please everyone help the poor, they have a life too!

Every Christmas I always ask for a horse. Have you ever wished for a horse?

I always dream of having a horse, right out-side my door. at would be the best present ever. I would ride it all the time, I would do chores for the rest of my life. I would do anything to have a horse, even though Santa would have a hard time carrying it. He could maybe put magic dust on her so she can y with the raindeers, going threw the chimneys would be hard, but Santa is magical, he can gure it out.

I have been a good girl. I even make cookies and lay out a glass of milk for Santa. Well, Mom and Dad says a horse is hard to take care of but now that I have my babysitting certi cate, I can make some money so I can keep up with the vet bills.

I really hope Santa can think about my wish. We have only a month till Christmas.P.S. It can be any kind of horse!

The Gospel according to Luke Chapter 2

King James Version. 2000.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

(And this taxing was rst made when Cyre’ni-us was governor of Syria.)

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of Da-vid, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David,) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be deliv-ered.

And she brought forth her rstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the eld, keeping watch over their ock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, be-hold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall nd the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a mul-titude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Midget Colts on a rollWith a winning streak on the line, the Clo-

verdale Colts Midget A2 hockey team faces Burnaby for the second time this week.

After getting off to a slow start this sea-son with a number of consecutive losses, the team appears to have turned the cor-ner, according to coach Kyle Spencer.

A 3-1 victory against Langley Eagles Dec. 13 in Cloverdale put the team in a good place, Spencer said.

“As of this morning we are first in our flight,” he said. “They’re playing well.”

On Monday, the Colts won 4-1 against Burnaby. They also host Burnaby tonight at the Cloverdale Arena.

“Hopefully, we’re going for number nine in a row,” Spencer said.

The team will then concentrate on an upcoming midget tournament Dec. 27 to 31 in Richmond.

Having diffi culty starting your vehicle?

A cold engine is a harder engine to get started. A cold engine needs more battery power to start. If your battery is older think about getting it tested and serviced if it is producing corrosion on the terminals.

When the weather gets really cold think about using a block heater. It can also save money on gas.

Keep your fuel tank at least half full. It limits condensation and the potential for freeze up.

Watch your cooling system. You should have a 50-50 mix of coolant to water. If your coolant is low, your heater is the fi rst thing to suffer.

Take time to think about an emergency kit suited towards your winter commute – hat, gloves, blanket, scrapper, cell phone, emergency candle, food, etc.

How do I support my “early learner” in their readiness for Full Day Kindergarten? This question may seem a little early, however, with kindergarten registration beginning soon, now is the time for parents to give it some thought. Let’s begin by affirming that you are your child’s first, lifelong and most important educator. Yes, as a parent I know there are days when this may seem like a daunting, impossible responsibility. All the more reason why surrounding your child with other caring, nurturing and responsive adults is an important first step. Creating a network of supportive relationships — the proverbial “village to raise a child” is time-honoured, well heeded, advice. These relationships and the attachments that young children build with the adults in their lives bring feelings of security, well-being and belonging. A biproduct of healthy relationships for children, is the confidence to interact with their environment, satisfy their curiousity and natural inclinations to play, explore and create. Finding the individuals and the opportunities for your early learner to be a part of a daycare, preschool or early learning centre that believes in these principles and is committed to work with parents, will support the successful growth and development of your early learner.

What should I expect from an open house?

Another critical part of the marketing process, the open house offers prospective buyers the chance to view houses in a low-pressure, “browsing” at-mosphere. With that in mind, you shouldn’t ex-pect it to generate a sale, at least not directly. What you should look for is traffic, and calls for private showings in the days following an open house. Open houses can be valuable, even if very few people show up. Such a situation can indicate that the price is too high; it may also lead you to look for ways to improve curb appeal

Eagles net hockey grantThey did it. And you helped get them there. After weeks of public voting, the local minor hockey team

that took to YouTube to garner support for its bid to win a financial prize has won the All Star Grants contest.

The Cloverdale H4 Eagles are one of 10 B.C. minor hockey teams that will receive $2,000 grants from Best Buy, through its All Star Grants contest – developed to coincide with the company’s support of the Vancouver Canucks.

Entrants were asked to submit a photo, video and descrip-tion of the team, plus explain how the grant would be used.

Nearly 300 teams entered the overall contest, with the top team earning 10,000 votes in the online contest.

Another local team, the Surrey H3 Penguins, has also won $2,000. The Eagles received the money Dec. 15 at a special presentation in Langley.

Buyers cautioned on Sandy cars Car buyers are being warned to watch out for U.S. im-

ports that may be flood damaged from Hurricane Sandy.Tens of thousands of vehicles on the U.S. east coast were

submerged in salt water and contaminated by bacteria and toxins from the storm.

And ICBC warns they’ll soon end up on the market across North America, with some likely showing up in B.C.

Flood-damaged vehicles are being designated non-re-pairable by Transport Canada and won’t qualify for on-road use in Canada because they can be extremely unsafe due to compromised electronic and computer systems.

ICBC recommends buying a U.S. import only from a li-censed dealer, which are required to disclose the vehicle’s history, conducting a thorough vehicle inspection and re-searching the vehicle’s history through online tools.

CONTRIBUTEDCloverdale’s Bantam A1 Colts take a break while helping out at the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program.

Another kind of teamworkMembers of the Cloverdale Colts Bantam A1 team spent

a couple of hours inside the drafty warehouse at Pacific Community Church Dec. 11 filling boxes of food and gifts for needy local families.

The team joined volunteers for the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program as they were getting ready for hamper pick-up day on Dec. 15.

More than 300 Cloverdale residents and families will be helped over the holidays, thanks to donations and support from individuals, schools and businesses in the community.

The Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program is a non-denominational program driven by volunteers.
