“The rise of the cloud is more than just another platform shift that gets geeks excited. It will undoubtedly transform the IT industry, but it will also profoundly change the way people work and companies operate.”

—The Economist, “Let it Rise,” 10/3/08

“In this architecture, the data is mostly resident on servers ‘somewhere on the Internet’ and the application runs on both the ‘cloud servers’ and the user’s browser.”

—Eric Schmidt in ‘Information Factories’, by G. Gilder

How Cloud Services affect reliability

• Customization is limited, simplifying and reducing the number of interface dependencies. Dependencies become explicit.

• Applications must be designed to take advantage of cloud service fault tolerance. Current services may not support your application architecture.

• Support for regulatory DR and RTO requirements?

• Internal SLAs covered by external customer service?

• “Where is my data?”, logically and geographically?

• Connectivity becomes critical.

Page 23: Cloud Computing Services And The Data Center

What does it mean for the Data Center?

• An open question.

• Data Center on demand.

• Little or no capital investment.

• Services will be additive.

• Privacy concerns, network bandwidth, and political hurdles will slow adoption as the segment matures.

• Ultimately, cloud services may drive a move to fewer, larger and hardened data centers.
