Evaluation is based on construction of the articles, garments and/or outfitsPattern instruction sheet is required for all units and attached securely in binderLabel all garment pieces by using a piece of muslin and fabric pen or fabric label. Include:name, age, unit and countyDemonstrate and display information learnedHave fun telling your storyExhibit at county fair

Beginner Tips:Unit 1: Use a simple pattern (5 pieces max)without set-in sleeves, zippers, collars orbutton loopsSimple seam finish, no sergersClothing is defined as wearableExhibit shall consist of 3 (or less) coordinatedpieces. No accessory items. (i.e. shoes, etc.)Units 1 & 2: Follow required sewing techniquesUnit 1 Fabric Selection: Firmly woven medium-weight cotton or at least 50% cotton blend.

Advanced Tips:Buttonholes and button loops areto be used in Unit 2 and aboveSerger seam finish may be usedUnit 2: Include one or more ofthese techniques: set-in sleeves,zippers, collars, cuffs or buttonholesUnit 2 Fabric Selection: Any wovenor knit fabric appropriate to designUnit 3: Demonstrate advancedsewing skills, such as: rolled hems,hand-picked zippers, princessseams, tailoring techniques (Frenchor Hong Kong), non-woveninterfacing, etc.Unit 3 Fabric Selection: 50-100percent of the fabric selected.Example: 75% wool and 25% cotton

Project Tips:Experiment with a variety of textile crafts

Decorate a garment of your choice, such as a

t-shirt, pants, jacket, blouse/shirt, etc.

Use different ideas and tools to create or

modify a design

Practice modeling skills

Share talents acquired through

demonstrations and exhibits

Exhibit Options:Applied – Decorations are

attached by gluing, fusing or

painting, such as jewels, puff

paints, applique’, or tie-dyed.

Stitched – Decorations may be

hand or machine stitched, such

as applique’ with satin stitch,

embroidery, quilting, beading,

knitting or crochet (by self or

others).

Combination – Decorations

include a significant amount

(minimum of 30 percent each)

from the two categories (such as

stitched and applied).
