THE SMALL BOY’S LUNCH

Today’s Gospel describes the miraculous feeding of 5,000 with five loaves and two fish and shows what the Lord can do with the little we offer Him. The small boy in the large crowd offered what he had, five barley loaves and two fish. The miracle that followed shows us how God uses the little we have to offer Him to meet the overwhelming needs of others. The people were needy, in a remote place, hungry and nowhere to buy food. The disciples had nothing to offer. Their solution was to send the crowd away so that they could buy their own food. But Jesus told them “You give them something to eat”. Philip calculated that it would cost 200 denarii, money they didn’t have and even if they did it would not be enough. Andrew finds a small boy in the crowd who has five barley loaves and two fish. The barley loaves were small flat barley cakes and the fish were pickled or dried small fish like sardines. Andrew’s comment, “ What are these among so many” only accentuates the inadequacy. Jesus is in control. “He knew what he was intending to do.” The small boy’s lunch is distributed among the people. Everyone is fed and twelve basketfuls of leftovers are gathered. The small boy gave what he had. His offering became the bread of life for the needy. When we offer whatever little we have to help others God will do the rest. Sr. Anne

Recently Deceased

KATHLEEN (Kay) McLOUGHLIN, Newland’s EAMON McDONNELL, Rockfield Drive

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families at this time.

Members of Martha’s Guild learned of the death of Kay with sadness and with fond memories. Kay was a faithful member for many years and served loyally to ensure that the church was clean and inviting. We often joked that when she’d get to Heaven she would be handed a brush or vacuum cleaner. We extend sympathies and prayers to her family and many friends.

Congratulations and Welcome! Ollie Alex Meade, Castle Park Hailey Carol Maher, City West

“Decide how you will travel to the Phoenix Park well in advance. You are strongly advised to take public or group transport (coach) to this event. Public transport and coaches will be given priority and will bring you closest to Phoenix Park.

It will not be possible to drive up to or near to the Phoenix Park by car.” (WMF website) Places on the coach booked for the Final Mass 26th August in the Phoenix Park at 3pm are being filled quickly. Those who have given in their names please pay €15 as soon as possible to ensure your place—you do need a ticket for the event. It is not decided yet how far the coach can get to the Phoenix Park. That will be decided by the Garda Traffic Control on the day. You will be kept posted weekly via the Newsletter. Monies can be left in the Sacristy, Shop or Office with your name and phone no. Be part of the distribution of Holy Communion

team at the Papal Mass in the Phoenix Park on

Sunday August 26th

We are seeking 4,000 ministers of Holy Communion to volunteer at Papal Mass. This is open to any of those who are already trained and assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion in their own parishes. We are looking for the help of lay people, priests, deacons and religious Ministers of Holy Communion. Those volunteering need to be already trained and functioning ministers of Holy Communion in your own parish community. Although there will be some plastic tracking laid down, much of the distribution will be done in the grassy corrals of the Phoenix Park Papal Mass site. You will need to be Garda vetted for this event, (if you are already Garda vetted for WMOF2018, that suffices). You will need to be in the Phoenix Park by 10:30AM on SUNDAY 26th August so as to be walked through how and where you will minister. Applications on the Website

Today Domhnach na Cruaiche—Reek Sunday - the tradition of pilgrimage to this holy mountain stretches back over 5,000 years from the Stone Age to the present day without interruption. Many thousands will climb the mountain. At the top Mass is celebrated and confessions are heard. It was on the summit of the mountain that Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in 441 AD and the custom has been faith-fully handed down from generation to generation. The Black Bell of Saint Patrick was a highly venerated relic on Croagh Patrick for many years. Let us pray for his intercession.
