Bill Whitley, Jr. Commodore Well, the season is upon us! Thanks to all who assisted across both of our Island Opening weekends. The Island made it through the winter in pretty good shape, and we are well on our way to being ready for a great season. A welcome to new CRBC caretaker John Collier, who moved on to the Island April 14 for the season. Please introduce yourselves and welcome John to the Island! A reminder that any tasks for John should be relayed to Cliff Cohen for scheduling. Minnich’s Marine has been purchased and renamed to Middle Channel Marina. I’ve visited with the new owners and am excited for what they have planned. They are doing seawall improvements, gas pump repairs and have completely gutted the house and will have a fully remodeled store for the season. We anticipate a fuel discount being available for CRBC members, so please stop in and see the place once your season begins. Information on seasonal wells has been sent to all who have requested, please contact me if you have not received it. The Flag & Board have a great season planned for the membership, and would appreciate any help you can provide, whether in maintenance, beautification or entertainment events. Please contact Cliff or Rich if you are able to assist in any way! ~ Bill

GROUNDS & MAINTENANCE REPORT From the desk of Cliff Cohen Cliff Cohen Vice Commodore
The weather did not cooperate this year........Island Opening was officially postponed but a small band of fearless members braved the awful weather conditions to make the trek to the island anyway! On Saturday morning the following folks made their way thru wind, rain, hail, snow and more rain to get started on island opening tasks. PC Bob Gutowski, Jason Gutowski, PC Bill Whitley, Donna Whitley, Commodore Bill Whitley Jr., Don Kersey, David Darbyshire, John and Debbie Kehrig, Rich Rozewicz, PC Gene Schaden, Chuck Custard and our new Care Taker John Collier. We got the gator unloaded along with several items for John's apartment and then got the electrical service operational. The water system was more of a challenge as several pipes and valves ruptured during the winter. Many thanks to PC Bob and his crew that identified the problem components and scrounged around the barn and tool crib for suitable replacement parts. We have a few more hours of work to get the system 100% functioning but we will get that done next weekend. We discovered that the red Farmall Tractor is in need of a new clutch and will be removed from the island for needed repairs. Other pieces of rolling stock were re-commissioned and are operational. Rich Rozewicz, with help from his small crew, worked on getting the kitchen in order and also prepared a great lunch for some very tired, cold and wet workers!! This weekend we will be transporting 240 bags of mulch to the island along with several pieces of equipment and shelving that has been graciously donated by PC Chris Nevison. The weather is forecasted to begin improving and we have many more tasks to complete before the season really gets under way, so please come out to the island and lend a hand. I would be most appreciative. Again, many thanks to those who braved the elements!!! Regards, Cliff Cohen Vice Commodore Grounds & Maintenance Chairman

Our own Club Island Eagle, now referred to as “Harsen”, had her 5 minutes of fame this week, as she was featured on The Detroit News. The article informs readers that she “sustained an injury to her right wing when a June 2017 windstorm knocked down the tree holding her nest”, and that “despite her injury, Harsen is healthy and energetic”! Harsen is now living in a habitat at the Detroit Zoo, where you can recognize her by her completely brown head. She won’t grow her top white feathers until she is 5 or 6 years old. For the full story and a short video clip of Harsen in her new home, visit: https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/oakland-county/2018/04/18/detroit-zoo-harsen-bald-eagle/33953203/
