This was the process book that details how I came up with the visual solutions for the film festival of the same name.

4 CLINT EASTWOOD BOB GUS VAN SANTStarted as an avant garde filmmaker

at the Rohde Island School of Design

influenced by fellow avant garde

filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage, and

Jonas Mekas. Intrigued by filmmaking

that pushed the edge of what the

audience was comfortable with he

leveraged themes of marginalized

individuals and how they related

to society; hustlers, junkies, and

emotionally troubled individuals. His

characters will face hardships that

they will have to overcome by the end

of the story like the drug addict Bob

Hughes (Matt Dillon) from Drugstore

Cowboy who sees the error of his

ways. Van Sant’s work did not reach

the masses until the release of Good

Will Hunting as a bridge work between

the arthouse films like My own private

Idaho and Drugstore Cowboy. While

the Good Will Hunting characters were

very much outside the norm of society

they audience was more comfortable

in relating to them because the primary

theme was trusting and loving people

in your life.

Classically trained as a dancer and

later as a choreographer, Bob Fosse

approaches the world of film with a

unique perspective that of someone

watching a stage performance. While

studying he was heavily influenced by

Fred Astaire one of the most renowned

American dancers of all time. As great

of a dancer as Fosse was it was his

talent for telling a story on stage and

with a camera. He would choreograph

for the camera making sure that the

person watching would be given the

best experience. He choreographed 15

films including 4 that he directed. He

was nominated for 4 Academy Awards

and won for his direction of Cabaret.

Working with and influencing probably

every dancer that he touched but Ann

Reinking is sited by many as being

personally responsible for affecting

Fosse’s style. Liza Manelli also worked

with Fosse on the project Liza with a

“Z”. Fosse has shown up in popular

culture being mentioned as a dancing

‘style” in the film The Birdcage with

Robin Williams. Fosse died of a heart

attack at the not so ripe old age of 60.

Eastwood has a long and illustrative

career spanning nearly 6 decades in

the film and motion picture industry. He

began his career working with Sergio

Leone in the late 1950’s in what has

become famously known “spaghetti

westerns” these were western style

movies that were directed by an Italian

Filmmaker. Eastwood is famous for

being the quintessential cowboy

personification in these films. His

interest in films was not quenched by

simply acting, he needed to direct, to

make films in his own vision. His films

have garnered him 5 Academy Awards

out of his 10 nominations as well as 3

Golden Globes out of 8 nominations.

He has shared credit as actor and

director in more than half the movies

that he has made. In his films he will

often introduce the audience to a

setting that they are unfamiliar but they

are willing to accept. His character both

the ones that he plays and the rest of

the cast all possess flaws that do not

make them evil but simply human. The

lead characters in his movie are often

outsiders with a dark past they prefer

not to remember.

SELECTION

Looking at all the directors that I had the option of selecting. I narrowed the list down to three. They are all creative visionaries, and can all be called filmmakers.

6 All the characters have a past that makes them imperfect, flawed personalities. But their current actions are trying to make up for past mistakes.

7DESIGN

BRIEF

History of the Festival : This will be a singular festival commemorating his 40 years

in film, kind of a homecoming festival. The newer films of

Clint Eastwood will be shown, where he is dealing with much

more of a human connection to the characters rather than

the westerns that he is so well known for. The films selected

are to show Eastwood’s growth as a director and to act as a

reminder where it all started.

Location: Oakland California at the Grand Theater at 3200 Grand ave. In

the neighborhood where Eastwood Grew up, The Festival would

be held on November 12, 2011 forty years after his first film was

released celebrating 40 years in the filmmaking industry.

Audience: The audience will be older 50 and up for the most part, they

will be semi retired with a continuing passion for life passion

for life. The connection with eastwood will be someone from

their generation that has redefined or reinvented himself

The title needed to be clear and incredibly simple to understand with a meaning that penetrated to the very core meaning of the festival

The poster is the cornerstone of the festival. It drove the visual language of the photo style, the typography and the basis of the grid layout. It was all about finding a cinematic look and feel.

20 It was important that the logo not be too western but remind the viewer that this is a Clint Eastwood Film Festival, and he is a scratchy tarnished kind of guy.

The raw image xeroxed from The

Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley.

This intermediate step creates a base

that all of the photos can be taken to

before being given their final treatment.

The photo has been treated with

a aging action that gives it a more

antique feel.

STYLE

I shot very little of the photography that was used on this project. Everything still needed it to work cohesively in the final presentation. There are a number of duotone colors but the basic process of neutralizing and then distressing the photographs remains consistent
