focused on Clinical and
Translational research,
this is an important
opportunity for you!
CTSI Joins the CTSA Midwest Consortium
With an emphasis on educational issues and a
goal of sharing resources, best practices and
facilitating collaboration, members of the Midwest
Consortium (MC) partner to strengthen clinical
research education programs, mentoring, and
career development opportunities for scholars.
The MC annual meetings are devoted to
enhancing scientific research education and
collaboration for K12 and KL2 scholars. The MC
provides a unique opportunity for scholars,
mentors and program leadership to focus on
addressing specific challenges and opportunities
in conducting research in the Midwest.
The MC Consortium includes representatives from
regional CTSA and K12 institutions and from institutions
in Institutional Development Award (IDeA) states.

Exploring the Metabolic Syndrome Workshop:
Basic Mechanisms, Clinical Implications and Community Impact
The temperature hovered around 5º F on
Wednesday, February 9, 2011 as eighty
people from all the CTSI partnering
institutions attended the Metabolic
Syndrome Workshop at the Grohmann
Museum - MSOE, Milwaukee.
This workshop was aimed towards
investigators who were interested in
sharing their ongoing Metabolic Syndrome
research, facilitating collaborations among
investigators at all CTSI partnering
institutions, developing new opportunities
for collaboration with community and
industry partners, and seeking to identify
and promote potential mentors.

Drs. David Harder (center) and Theodore Kotchen (far
right) presented Dr. Kissebah (far left) with a plaque
signed by Dr. Reza Shaker, Director CTSI.
The Keynote Address was given by
Robert H. Eckel, MD University of Colorado School of Medicine
Nine poster presentations were
distributed throughout the museum
Small group session
“Genetics of Metabolic Syndrome”
“On this 9th day of February 2011, the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute are presenting this token of appreciation for your seminal descriptions of gynecoid and android obesity, your sustained commitment to identify the genetic determinants of obesity, and your leadership
as a clinical investigator.”
Translational Technologies and Resources Key Function
TTR MISSION
The mission of the CTSI Translational
Technologies and Resources Key Function
(TTR) is to transform the research environment
in southeast Wisconsin by encouraging
efficient use of existing technology cores,
integrating isolated technology resources
into core structures, providing technical
assistance to core users, and by developing
technology training programs for fellows,
faculty, and staff.
The TTR will promote innovation by working
with the research community of southeastern
Wisconsin and the CTSI Pilot and Collaborative
Translational and Clinical Studies Key
Function to develop new technologies for
existing cores and new technologies that lead
to new cores. Learn more...

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) have posted a
challenge “Go Viral to Improve Health: IOM-NAE Health Data Collegiate Challenge” to spur
undergraduate and graduate students to transform health data into effective, innovative new apps to
engage people in various communities to promote action in order to improve health and healthcare.
The challenge can be found at:
Go Viral to Improve Health: IOM-NAE Health Data Collegiate Challenge
The Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Consortium has established a website where
researchers can post requests for needed collaborators to build out an idea or a project and look for
opportunities to collaborate with others. You do not have to be at a CTSA institution to post or respond
to posts. New collaborations and quicker progress on all projects is the goal.
