1.3 Population Growth Part 1: Human Populatin Growth

Part A: Watch the video ‘7 billion, National Geographic Magazine’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc4HxPxNrZ0

1) Approximately how many people are on Earth?

2) About every second _________ people are born and _________ people die. Therefore, the human population GROWS by _________ people per second. (Hint: Calculate births – deaths)

3) The average life span in 2010 was __________ years old, in 1960 it was ___________.

4) A megacity has more than _______ million people. In 1975 there were _______ megacites, currently there are _______.

Part B: Watch the video ‘Population Connection–World Populations’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_9SutNmfFk

5) What happened around 1800 that caused the human population to increase rapidly?

6) What happened around the 1950’s that caused another explosion in the human population?

7) If the current growth rates continue, how long will it take to double the human population?

Part C: Watch the video ‘7Billion: How Did We Get So Big So Fast?’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcSX4ytEfcE

8) Populations increase when people are ___________.

9) Populations decrease when people ___________.

10) What 3 countries account for most of the worlds populations?

11) What 2 modern improvements have reduced the number of deaths per births?

Part 2: Population Biology Review

Part A: Types of Community Interactions

Purpose. In any ecological community, organisms of different populations interact with each other, whether directly or indirectly. Directions. Create a table that shows ecosystem relationships by completing the table below to summarize these types of interactions and the effects on each species in the relationship.

Part B: Interpreting Population Graph Models Directions: Look at the graphs below and answer the following questions. Title each group of questions by the graph title.

Graph 1 - Exponential Growth and Carrying Capacity

A

3. With a colored pencil, draw what the graph of a white-tail deer population might look like in relationship to the while tail deer population on the graph above.

1. Who has a better chance of surviving infancy - Indian or American women?

2. At what age are most oysters dead?

3. At what age are most fish dead?

4. Look at Curve A. Notice that it levels off between the ages of 20-40. What does this mean?

5. Which has a longer life expectancy - fish or oysters?

Graph 4 - Competition Curve Graph 4 shows the growth of 2 species of bacteria grown on the same petri dish. It also

1. Give one possible reason why the population decreased in 1990 after it had reached its carrying capacity?

2. Give one possible explanation to explain why the population exceeded its carrying capacity in 1992.

shows their growth rate when grown separately

1. Which of the two types of bacteria soon die? Why?

2. Which of the two types of bacteria stains is better adapted for competition? Why?

3. How is the growth rate of P. caudatum different when it is grown alone? Why do you think this is?

4. What happens to the growth rate of P. aurelia around day 12?

Graph 5 – Predator-Prey Graph Isle Royale National Park on a remote island was established in 1940, and designated a wilderness area in 1976. The only mode of transportation available is by boat or seaplane. Moose first arrived at Isle Royale around 1900. The moose population tends to increase in years with mild winters, early spring green-up, abundant winter forage, low wolf numbers and low levels of tick infestation. Wolves first arrived at the island on an ice bridge from Canada in 1940. Disease has also influenced the wolf population. Between 1980 and 1982, the wolf population declined from 50 to 14, due to canine parvovirus.

1. What is the greatest moose population? What year did that occur? What was the wolf population when the moose population what the greatest?

2. Describe the pattern between the wolf (predator) population and the moose (prey) population

3. Based on the reading identify two factors, other than the wolf population, that may influence the moose population.
