ALMASHEV, Chagat Director, Foundation for Sustainable Development of Altai (FSDA), Altai Republic of Russia

Biography: As FSDA director, Chagat has been working for 10 years supporting indigenous/local communities of Altai Mountains to protect their sacred sites and officially designated Nature Parks managed by indigenous leaders and to preserve their traditional knowledge. Since 2009 he has been involved in scientific works on collection elements of TK about climate change in Central Asia. In 2010 he was a consultant on the UNU/FSDA film “Land has breath” about indigenous Altaian shaman’s view to modern changes climate, nature and culture. He is author of series of books and guidebooks about Indigenous Communities Conserved Areas (ICCA) and TK.

AHMED, Essam Hassan Mohamed Consultant for the Climate Change Department (CCD), Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA)

Biography: Since joining the Climate Change Unit; EEAA in 2007 (that developed to CCCD in 2009), Essam has been involved in CDM projects, and mitigation and adaptation studies; and also involved in many other issues related to climate change impacts, ICTs and Transportation sectors in particular. Essam is also a Lead Author; WGIII, 5th IPCC Assessment Report. Before joining the EEAA, Essam worked at Egyptian Military Armed Forces as Engineering Officer for 20 years.

Biography: Patrick lives in Indonesia and works with the Forest Peoples Programme and the Samdhana Institute to support indigenous peoples and local communities to understand and assert their rights in relation to oil palm, forestry and REDD+ developments. Biography: Bibiana has contributed to the elaboration of participatory socio-environmental tools for the integral management of natural resources of Amerindian communities, as well as undertaking research into climate change mitigation. Biography: Convening Australia’s first landowner conference on the emerging markets around forest carbon in 1998, Johannes has led a wide range of projects throughout Australia-Asia on sustainable development. Biography:

Shweta joined the Centre for Development Finance (CDF) in 2010 after working as a consultant to the 13th Finance Commission of India, on developing a case for increased budgetary allocation to the Forestry sector. At CDF, Shweta has been leading action research projects to advise policymakers on strategies and practices for the conservation of forest ecosystems by understanding the pressure drivers and developing enabling strategies for various government entities.

Biography: Gabriel is an ecologist that has been working for IDESAM since 2007 conducting research on land use and land use change and forest carbon accounting and monitoring in the Amazon. Biography: Since joining the Global Forest Coalition in 2008, Estebancio has been following the negotiations on REDD. Biography: Mr Dhakal holds a BSc in forestry (earned in Nepal) and a master’s in natural resources management (earned in Thailand). Biography: Bob Gough is an attorney/cultural ecologist with 30+ years experience on tribal cultural/natural resource issues, who co-chaired Native Peoples climate workshops (1998-2009), who worked on USDOE’s Wind Powering Native America Initiative (2001-2009), building sustainable tribal economies (1976-2012), and who co-authored the Inaugural World Clean Energy Award winning COUP tribal energy plan (2007).

Biography: Leonardo is a veterinary doctor, though not an orthodox one. Post graduating in environmental economics, he has worked with nature conservation since 1994 when he was a volunteer at the

HENDERSON, Robbie Manager Climate Change Mitigation Programs, Live & Learn Environmental Education, Australia

Biography: Since joining Live & Learn in 2004, Robbie has worked on a broad range of sustainable development and environmental education projects in the Western Pacific, Asia, and Australia, and currently oversees two Pacific REDD+ pilot projects. HUANG, Yongfu Research Fellow, UNU-WIDER, Finland

Biography: Yongfu Huang is a research fellow at the United Nations University’s World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) in Helsinki. He holds a PhD in Economics with research interests on climate change economics, macroeconomics and econometrics. Yongfu was previously a Tyndall Research Fellow at the Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research at the University of Cambridge. He also serves on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as Lead Author for its 5th Assessment Report (AR5), working on 'Cross-cutting finance and investment issues'. Yongfu has published widely on the topics of development economics. His publication includes a monograph entitled ‘Determinants of Financial Development’ (Palgrave MacMillan, 2010) and articles in Nature Climate Change, World Bank Economic Review, Journal of Applied Econometrics, World Development, etc.

Biography: Yayan is an anthropologist, who since 2010 has been involved with studies related to REDD and climate change in Indonesia especially as Field Research Supervisor for CIFOR’s Global Comparative Study on REDD project. Yayan is also Indonesian Fellow for the Asian Public Intellectual Fellowship, under which he studied indigenous people minorities in Peninsular Malaysia.

JACOBSOHN, Margaret Founding co-director, now trustee, Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation (IRDNC) Namibia

Biography: IRDNC, the NGO co-founded by Margaret and Garth Owen-Smith nearly 30 years ago, pioneered community-based natural resource management in Namibia. The little project has become a national award-winning program led by the Namibian Government, supported by more than 15 NGOs and involving nearly 100 community-based organizations called conservancies or community forests. Margaret’s interest is implementation, not research. For her work she has received the Goldman Foundation’s Grassroots Environmental Prize for Africa – co-winner with Garth Owen-Smith, and is a UNEP Global 500 laureate.

Biography: Since joining the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences in 1995, Jashimuddin has been involved in teaching and research on forest and environment related issues including climate change, biodiversity conservation, indigenous communities and poverty alleviation. Jashimuddin also worked as visiting professor at the University of Tokyo, Japan from May-December 2011. Before joining the institute, Jashimuddin worked at the Bangladesh Forest Department as Assistant Conservator of Forests.

Biography: Laurent is the founder of the Laurent World Broom Collection at the University Of Michigan Museum Of Anthropology and discovered a new plant species, called Bernardia laurentii, in 1986. Laurent is an ethnobotanist and former Herbarium Curator with the St. Lucia National Trust, St. Lucia, 1984 to 1994. He presently investigates local communities to revisit the Jaden Kwéyòl as a traditional knowledge base to cushion the impact of climate change in the insular Caribbean and to insure food safety, security and sovereign in the Caribbean.

Biography: Pyotr has worked as a deputy head for reindeer herding at Turvaurgin nomadic tribal community since 1985. He participates in regional and international conferences on the issues of reindeer herding development and working experience exchange as well as on the problems of the indigenous peoples of the North.

Biography: Mr. Chupinit has been the AIPP president since 2002, a Consultant for the Network of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand (NIPT) and Inter Mountains Peoples Education and Culture in Thailand Association (IMPECT). He has worked as a full time professor in Srinakarinwirot University, Bangkok. He has been working with indigenous peoples for more than 40 years. KOGOLO, Annette Nyapajarri skin Puruta Wayawu bush name Walmajarri Juwaliny country

Biography: Senior Kimberley Walmajarri woman and traditional owner Annette Puruta Wayawu Kogolo is a steering committee member for the Warlu Jilajaa Jumu Indigenous Protected Area. She is currently the cultural adviser for the Ngurrara seasonal calendar and climate change monitoring project in the Great Sandy Desert. Annette works closely with Ngurrara Rangers, senior Traditional Owners and scientists to identify culturally appropriate climate change mitigation strategies. Annette has been actively involved in Indigenous land management programs for over 20 years. Recently she was a water facilitator for the Fitzroy Catchment in NAILSMA’s Indigenous Community Water Facilitator Network and worked closely with CSIRO and TRaCK scientist to improve Indigenous involvement in catchment management. Additionally Annette is a qualified interpreter in two Indigenous languages and has worked extensively on both national and international comities as an advocate for Indigenous rights.

LEONARD, Sonia Research fellow, Indigenous Dimensions of Climate Change, Australian Indigenous Studies, Centre of Health and Society, The University of Melbourne

Biography: Sonia is a research fellow (Indigenous Dimensions of Climate Change) at the University of Melbourne, investigating the effectiveness of climate change mitigation and adaptation tools in Northern Australia Indigenous communities. She has extensively worked with Indigenous people across Northern Australia over many years. Previously Sonia worked with a number of Indigenous organisations in the Kimberley helping to investigate of the integration of Traditional Knowledge and western science to develop climate change monitoring and evaluation tools for Indigenous Protected Areas. Sonia was a writing group member of the Australian Indigenous Communities National Adaptation Plan with NCCARF and also worked with Bureau of Meteorology to develop an Indigenous seasonal calendar and weather knowledge interactive online tool.

Biography: Helen Magata is with the research desk of Tebtebba since 2007. She has been involved in coordinating researches by indigenous peoples on self-determined development and climate change among others. MILNE, Sarah Postdoctoral Fellow, Resource Management Asia-Pacific Program, Australian National University

Biography: Sarah Milne is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian National University. Her research explores the politics of transnational biodiversity conservation and forest carbon initiatives; especially in Cambodia, where she been involved in community-based conservation efforts since 2002. She completed her PhD in Geography at the University of Cambridge in 2009.

Biography: Bronwyn has over a decade of experience with research and capacity building projects in eastern Indonesia, including fire management, natural resource management, health mapping and food security. Last year her team completed an assessment of vulnerability to climate change in Timor-Leste with respect to groundwater resources.

Biography: Brian Wyatt is a Churchill Fellow with more than 30 years experience in community and government administration of Aboriginal affairs. Biography: Professor Harper has a BSc Agric (Hons) and PhD, both from the University of Western Australia, and had twenty years experience with the WA Government in both science and policy roles in programs addressing land and water degradation and climate change mitigation. Biography: Born in Aasiaat, Greenland, Aqqaluk Lynge has represented the Inuit of Alaska, Canada, Greenland and the Far East of Russia as President of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) since 1997-2002 and as international Chair 2010-14. Mr Lynge started his professional career as a social worker after graduating from the National Danish School of Social Work, and has also worked as a radio journalist and was elected to the Greenland Parliament in 1983-1995 and again 2002-2005. Biography: Mr Sokona is the Coordinator of the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) based in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. He is also a co-chair of IPCC Working Group III. He was the Executive Secretary of the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) from June 2004 to May 2010. A citizen of Mali, he focuses on the energy, environment and sustainable development nexus and he has broad experience in Africa in policy development. Before joining OSS, he works for the Environnement et Développement du Tiers Monde, based in Dakar, Senegal. Prior to that, he served as professor at Ecole Nationale d’Ingenieur of Bamako in Mali. Throughout his career, Mr Sokona has served in various advisory capacities to African governments. Biography: An indigenous (Kankana-ey Igorot) activist, researcher and writer who is presently the Executive Director of Tebtebba. Vicky coordinates the “Indigenous Peoples’ Partnership on Forests and Climate Change” composed of indigenous peoples' organizations and networks in 11 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. She has been a negotiator for the Philippine Government in the REDD+ negotiations of the UNFCCC since 2009; convenes the Asia Indigenous Women’s Network (AIWN); is co-chair of the SBSTA Working Group on REDD+; and was the Chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues from 2005-2010. Biography: Jan Minx earned his PhD in environmental economics and management from the University of York. He is the head of the Technical Support Unit (TSU) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group III, where he coordinates the assessment process of the Working Group III contribution to the 5th Assessment Report with his team. Previously he worked as a senior researcher in the department for the Economics of Climate Change and Sustainable Engineering at Technical University, Berlin, as well as at the Stockholm Environment Institute. JAMES, Glenn Carbon Social Programs Officer, NAILSMA

Biography: Glenn studied at the Australian National University in Canberra, gaining an Honours degree in Political Science and Philosophy (1987) and a Masters degree in Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development (2004). He has been living and working with Aboriginal people around the Northern Territory since 1989 in various capacities. After working with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Association in Yuendumu (1989-98) he undertook a consultancy with the Central Land Council on local Indigenous employment in the Tanami gold mines followed by work with the Northern Land Council on outstanding land needs in the NT's northern pastoral areas. Later as a full time employee with the Northern Land Council for over 8 years, he worked in enterprise development and as a regional anthropologist for the central Barkly and north east Arnhem regions. Immediately before joining NAILSMA in March 2009, Glenn worked with CSIRO as a social researcher / anthropologist on Indigenous livelihoods relating to the mining and land management.

Biography: Ameyali works on issues related to indigenous knowledge, environmental governance, water resource management and climate change. Since 2007, Ameyali has been working on the Traditional Knowledge Initiative developing research activities on indigenous peoples, climate change and water. Her experience includes research and teaching activities in Mexico, Kenya, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, and Japan. Ameyali holds a PhD in Environmental Governance from the Oxford University Environmental Change Institute and a Master of Science from the Oxford University Center for the Environment.

Biography: Born and raised in a coastal village in Kamchatka, Russia, Gleb is a conservation biologist with expertise in resource co-management and traditional knowledge systems. He previously led the development of a new global grant-making strategy for the Christensen Fund on biocultural diversity and resilience and has continued to work in the field of biocultural diversity with a focus on participatory research and communication, indigenous rights, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and traditional knowledge. He has written and contributed to books, scientific and popular articles on indigenous issues and conservation in both English and Russian.

Biography: Henrietta was born and raised in the Aboriginal community of Yarrabah southeast of Cairns in Queensland (Australia). Henrietta has held academic posts at a number of Australian universities, including at the Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Participation, Research and Development at the James Cook University of North Queensland, and the Centre for Indigenous History and the Arts at the University of Western Australia. Prior to joining Christensen, she worked at the United Nations Environment Programme Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, has served on a number of government committees and inquiries, and acted as a consultant to government bodies. Henrietta holds a Diploma of Teaching (South Australian College of Advanced Education), a Graduate Diploma of Arts (University of South Australia) and a Masters of Environmental and Local Government Law (Macquarie University).

RAI, Navin K. Indigenous Peoples Adviser, World bank

Biography: Mr. Rai oversees implementation of the World Bank strategy and policy on Indigenous Peoples. He provides technical advice on the Bank’s corporate vision related to Indigenous Peoples, conducts quality assurance reviews for complex development projects affecting Indigenous Peoples, and supports capacity building for Indigenous Peoples’ organizations and borrower agencies on Indigenous Peoples issues. As the Bank’s principal point of contact on Indigenous Peoples issues, Mr. Rai liaises with the global Indigenous Peoples community, UN-related Indigenous Peoples bodies, as well as other multilateral and bilateral agencies working on Indigenous Peoples issues. Mr. Rai is also Lead Specialist for the Inclusion and Social Safeguards Team in the Bank’s Social Development Department, where he coordinates implementation of the Bank’s social safeguards policies as well as the program on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change.
