Warm up Activities

Students will do brainstorming and they will be prompted to say the first word that comes to their mindsrelated to the issue of mining. The result will be displayed on the whiteboard.

We will give students a brochure with a collection of images of minerals.

We will show students images related to mining, such as work tools, mining, equipment ...

After that, we will work with flash-cards to introduce the vocabulary of the subject . The teacher will show and say the word aloud. Later on we will introcude the wordcards (written word). With the words learnt students will perform a small dictionary themselves.

Vocabulary: MINERAL, COLTAN, APPLIANCE, TECHNOLOGY, PHONE

Students will design a poster-mural, where they will express their understanding on the extraction of Coltan and its consequences. In addition, they will create solutions to try to alleviate the situation that will be included in the mural. Finally, the task will be exposed in class. Moreover the task will be assessed by peers. HOT

Use of proper vocabulary and structures related to the topic. 20% Qualification

Acquisition of basic concepts related to mining and Coltan. Students should have clearly defined ideas + Positive attitude during the class + Participation in the class proceedings. 80% Qualification

After that, the teacher will give a worksheet to the students with logos of technologic large companies, in order to know if the students know them. If the students don’t know the logo, they can search in google images in order to find the solution. The teacher will proposed the next website: www.images.google.es

In addition, the teacher will show new vocabulary: MINE, EXPLOITATION, WAR, CHILDREN, HOMELESS, ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCE, FINANCING and HUNGER.

In order to remind the vocabulary, the students will play Bingo, where they will choose 5 words from their dictionary. The teacher will show flashcards at random. The first student who completes the Bingo will say the definitions of the words to the rest of the class.

Students will watch a PowerPoint with more information, in which they should identify several words that appear in their dictionaries. After that, students will say the words that they watch during the PowerPoint.

In this activity the student will work on the song “Mad World”, in which they have to filling the gaps. The vocabulary is already known by them and, in addition, some words that they don’t know, but these words are pretty easy and they should know them.

We will review the vocabulary of the unit with a flashcards’ activity. The name of the activity is “clap with words” and it is very useful to work on the stress of the

words. The teacher shows a flashcards and the students have to clap their hands for each syllable.

The vocabulary introduced in this lesson is: SAD, SORROW, HARD, MAD.

In the main part the students will perform a role play, where one half of the class will perform the bosses of important companies and the other half of the class will belong to ONGs. They will discuss their positions.

First of all, we have to establish two teams, and they will change their roles. Secondly, one team will read the description of one word of the flashcards of the previous sessions and the other team has to guess the word. We can make a competition between the two teams.
