and dancing are often an important part of this.

There are different types of African music, for example Islamic music in the north and traditional tribal music in the centre. But there is also modern African music like Mbalakh from Senegal or Kwela from South Africa.African music is especially famous for its rhythm. Musicians use different types of drums and percussion instruments to play different rhythms. Drums are very important in African music. You can play drums with your hands or with a stick. There are small drums and very big drums. There are drums for special occasions like weddings or a new baby.A traditional African drum is a tube of wood covered with animal skin. Sometimes people who live in cities haven’t got wood or animal skin. They use a plastic barrel!African drums are international. Famous rock musicians, like Larry Mullen Junior from U2,use African drums and rhythms in their music. Remember, when you listen to your favourite band, maybe they play African drums too!
