EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS STILLWATER - Town of Stillwater Emergency Management Preparedness Committee. Are you ready? Power outages, heavy snows, ice storms, thunderstorms, floods…they can all be scary and create feelings of helplessness. We can’t control the weather, but we can prepare. Creating and maintaining a “ready kit” with essential emergency items offers a measure of calm amid a storm, literally. There are many basic items to consider, and each household can “custom fit” theirs. Excel-lent checklists are available from the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org or FEMA at www.ready.gov. To learn more about your Stillwater Community Emergency Management Committee, contact Chairman Tom Rinaldi at (518) 944-5263.

India is a smart girl with a very faithful nature. Once she’s friends with you, she is yours entirely. This girl also has a beautiful grey coat and is just a

very attractive mutt. Watch India’s video.

Hi there, I’m Scarlet. I have a torbie coat - that means tiger with orange. My fur is medium length and real soft. My former family had young kids and a dog, and I got along fine with everybody. Then a new baby came along, and

became allergic to me. So here I am, and I’m a little confused by this big change in my life. That’s why I seem a little shy. But I like to be petted and after I get to know you I get over my shyness. You can brush me and that will help us bond, and keep my coat looking its best. I’m still young and

playful so we can have lots of fun together.

Hi, my name is Boots, and what a handsome black and white tuxedo cat I am. I have wonderful big eyes. I’m a lady of a certain age. I came to the shelter with my sister Tubby and my brother Sysco. After we spent our

whole lives with one family, they moved and had landlord issues and could not take us. We lived with dogs and kids there and got on fine with every-

body. My front feet are declawed so I must be an indoor cat. This move is a big change for cats of our age. But you know we are doing okay because we are all so nice and friendly. I am a very affectionate puss and I enjoy people

so much. Take me home and we can enjoy lots of cuddle time.

Silverbell -- a lovely name for a lovely mutt. This girl is affectionate and low-key. She also is very good-looking with absolutely beautiful markings

on her coat.

SURVEY: JOB SEEKERS CARE MORE ABOUT

PAYCHECK THAN HEALTH CARE (NewsUSA) - The recent government shutdown inconve-nienced many Americans -- from federal workers, to tourists -- but how did it impact those looking for work? The health care debate was among the main catalysts for the shutdown, with both parties claiming to be the voice of the public, but has the voice of the job seeker been drowned out as a result?

A new national poll asked those very questions to fi nd out what was more important to job seekers -- a paycheck

or health insurance. The result? The majority of unemployed Americans (77 percent) would apparently take the job, even if it meant no health insurance.

Online career network Beyond.com surveyed over 5,000 job seekers from across the country to fi nd out how the gov-

What do you think people will be most thankful for -- a paycheck or health care?

ernment shutdown and the technical frustrations with the health care rollout impacted their employment search. The survey comprised a dozen questions to determine if health-care was really the main concern for those seeking work, and most respondents, it appears, were just interested in a salary to support their family.

* 61 percent of those who participated in the survey said that their top priority when it comes to a job is salary, not health care.

* That's despite approximately 32 percent of respondents saying they currently don't have health insurance, with near-ly 50 percent of those people citing they haven't had health insurance for more than a year.

* 89 percent of respondents said they'd do just about any-thing to fi nd a job, including working long hours and/or weekends.

"With so much speculation about the job market, we de-cided to go out and ask job seekers exactly what they were thinking," said Joe Weinlick, VP of Marketing at Beyond.com. "A big part of fi nding a job is confi dence, and while health care is certainly an important issue, we've found that those looking for work are more concerned about things like hon-ing interview skills or updating their resume. Health insur-ance is one of many factors people need to weigh when con-sidering a job off er, but you have to get the job off er fi rst."

Survey respondents included job seekers from the Millen-nial, Gen X and Baby Boomer generations. Surprisingly, the majority of respondents from each generation reported that they'd consider job off ers even if they didn't include health insurance at all -- despite numerous reports citing the in-creased need for health care across the board, especially with Baby Boomers.

GREAT CAR CARE TIPS FOR SENIORS(StatePoint) Car repair and maintenance can put a strain on both a senior’s budget and back. With some smart and simple preventive care, you can reduce automotive troubles down the line.

Tread and Tire Pressure

The last thing any senior needs is a blown out tire while driving. Avoid this dangerous sce-nario by checking the tread on your tires and the air pressure once a month. Tires with little or no tread and that are showing threads are unsafe and should be replaced immediately.  For the recommended air pressure for your tires, do not go by the numbers on the sidewall of the tires. Instead, refer to the owner’s manual or sticker on the driver’s side door. Not only does proper air pressure decrease the likelihood of a blowout, but it increases your car’s gas mile-age, and gives your vehicle better traction.

Change the Oil

The truth is that oil changes take time and money. However, if this task is not done routinely, then the overall health of your engine can be jeopardized.

When using conventional oil, it’s recommended to change the oil every 3,000 miles. However you can save yourself some work and better protect your investment by using high-quality synthetic motor oil instead. For example, Royal Purple HMX is specifi cally designed to mini-

mize wear and tear and restore performance in engines with more than 75,000 miles. Instead of the typical oil change once every 3,000 miles, synthetic oil can reduce the frequency to once every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or once every 12 months, depending on how much your vehicle is used.

For more information on how you can maximize your engine’s longevity and save money, visit www.RoyalPurpleConsumer.com.

Check Lights

Don’t be the one left in the dark. Regularly check your headlights, taillights, turning signals and brake lights. Thousands of accidents a year are the direct result of failed lights. Check your lights by asking a trusted neighbor, friend or family member to walk around your car as you turn the headlights, taillights and turning signals off and on. Also, apply light pressure to the brake to make sure your brake lights are working as well. If a light is out, check the fuses. An easy do-it-yourself replacement can save you time and money.

You don’t have to be a professional mechanic or overextend your budget to increase the lifetime of your car. Some simple proactive and regular care will go a long way in keeping you and your car together, far down the road.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County

Happy New Year From Your Local Chamber Of Commerce

A popular tune from the 20th Century warned us that “the years go by as swiftly as a wink,” and boy do they ever! It’s hard to believe we are at the be-ginning of yet another year, but sure enough the calendar says its now 2014. Remember when the Millennium was something in the distant future? Now it’s in a history book, and we can already think of so many things that have changed since that time. Fourteen years ago gasoline still cost under $2.00, the Twin Towers still stood in New York City, and I was still “Mr. Mom” caring for an infant child, running a small business from home far downstate with no idea I’d one day be a Sara-toga County resident. Now, that infant (my son Jonathan) is 14 and halfway through 9th grade at Shen, and he still can’t believe I ever lived in a time when there were no iPods, cell phones or video games. As the aforementioned song says, we should enjoy ourselves in Tech Valley in 2014. GLOBALFOUND-RIES continues to build its manufacturing empire in Malta, while all across southern Saratoga County our small business community is growing, seeking new opportunities and coming together through the Chamber and other net-working mechanisms. If you’re a business owner or would like to be one, now

is the time to look into the many resources available to help you move forward. Farm businesses will get extra attention from the Chamber this year. Looking for a vol-unteer opportunity? The Saratoga County Community Development Program can use your help. We will be doing some renovation work at the Brookside Museum in mid-January, plus cleanup work at Historic Lock 19 and the Mechanicville Train Station later this spring. For more information or to volunteer, please contact us at (518) 371-7748 or email me at [email protected] .
