Clifton Avenue acts as a physical barrier to Burnet Woods, the university, and surrounding neighborhoods. Our mission is to use the principles of balance, safety, and eco-design to improve Clifton Avenue and blend the natural and built environments. This streetscape proposal transforms the street from an automobile dominated corridor into a multi-modal public space that is self-sustaining and manages the street’s stormwater runo through green infrastructure design. A sense of comfort is created using trac calming design - slowing down motorist and creating a pleasant streetscape experience for all users.

The existing street typology of Clifton Avenue was analyzed to determine the percentage of space dedicated to each type of user - pedestrians, motorists, and cyclist. Analysis showed exactly how automobile oriented Clifton Avenue is. As well as the need to create dedicated space for cyclists.

A heat map was created documenting the most desirable places to park along the corridor. Parking utilization was highest along the east side of the corridor, along the University of Cincinnati, near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. W, and approaching the Ludlow Business District. Parking along the entire west side of Clifton Avenue, especially the street side along the Good Samaritan Hospital and the Hebrew Union College had a very low parking utilization rate. The table below shows the number of occupied and unoccupied parking meters for 3 dierent days. Yielding an average marking meter utilization rate of 54%. This data concludes that roughly half of Clifton’s metered street parking spaces are utilized on average.

WALKABILITY & CONNECTIVITY ANALYSISAn analysis of the block sizes, number of crosswalks, the length between crosswalks, and proximity to busi-nesses and institutions was used to measure the corridor’s walkability and connectivity.

WALKABILITY & CONNECTIVITY ANALYSISAnalysis concluded to show that Clifton Avenue is a major connection between Burnet Woods, the Ludlow Business District, the Calhoun St./ W. McMillan mixed-use corridor, major institutions such as the University of Cincinnati, the Deasoness Hospital, Hughes High School, Hebrew Union College, and the Good Samaritan Hospital.

STREET SHED ANALYSISAn analysis of the corridors street shed was used to visualize the amount of set back space - the space between the street and building facades. Street shed has a direct wwwwww to the streetscape experience and how all users perceive the street. Clifton Avenue has a very large street shed, disconnecting the street from the surrounding buildings and other activity. Large set backs act as barriers from building activity and street activity- as well as create an uninviting walking experience. Our proposal for Clifton Avenue aims to create a safe, walkable environment.

The existing condition for Clifton Ave. consists of a turning lane and 4 travel lanes anked by a parking lane on either side. At its existing condition, Clifton Ave. sidewalks are 5’ wide with a 5’ utility/ tree zone.
EXISTING STREET SECTION
Our proposal for Clifton Ave. includes widened sidewalks, contra-ow bike lanes, green infrastructure, a median, parking along the east side of the street, and streetscape improvements - brick pavers, historic street lamps and fencing. The nal design was selected as the best choice through a design analysis and rating process.

The Clifton Avenue Streetscape Master Plan incorporates our long term vision for the corridor. With current development trends in the surrounding neighborhoods, we anticipate new mixed-use development in addition to our multi-modal streetscape plan.
The intention behind creating a plaza crosswalk in the middle of Clifton Ave. is to create much needed public space along the Clifton corridor, while creating a crosswalk that diverts motorist trac naturally, without the need for a trac signal. A brick paved crosswalk, speed tables, and forced diversion around the plaza space achieve the design intention, as well as creating an aesthetic gateway to the proposed restaurant.
