Your Former Loving

Kindness?Psalm

89

Background

• Written by Ethan theEzrahite•1 Kngs. 4:31?• A Mishil (or contemplation)

Psalm 89

Background

• Written during a time when the throne of David was in distress.

• Best fit, during the fall of Judah to Babylon (cf. 2 Kngs. 24:8 - Jehoiachin)

Psalm 89

Praise to God (1-4)

• Typical beginning

• Acknowledges God’s mercy•Vs. 3-4 – God’s covenant

with David (2 Sam. 7:12-16)

Faithfulness of God (5-18)• All creation attributed to Him • Faithfulness in the assembly of

the saints - Vs. 5, 7 • None in the heavens compare• He is mighty• Faithfulness surrounds Him• Righteous & Just• “Our shield” (vs. 18)

David’s Throne (19-29)• Recalls the throne taken from

King Saul and given to David 1 Sam. 13:14, 16:1-13•24-29 God’s promise to

establish David’s throne •28-29 – His throne and

seed will endure forever

David’s descendants (30-37)• Punished for iniquity• But God’s lovingkindness and

faithfulness will not fail •34-35 Covenant will not be

broken•36-37 – His throne and

seed will endure forever

David’s descendants (30-37)• This statement consistent with

God’s character (1 Sam. 15:29, 1 Cor. 1:9, 2 Tim. 2:13, Jas. 1:17, …)

• Was His promise conditional? Cf. 1 Kn. 2:1-4

• Did God force His people to follow Him?

David’s descendants (30-37)

• Note Vs. 34, 36-37 – what would endure? His throne and his seed Is there anything in these verses that precludes their fulfillment in heaven?

You have cast us off (38-45)• A strong description of Judah’s

rejection. Some this as going too far in accusing God of failing to keep His word

• Is the charge RASH?• Who abhorred the covenant?• Consider Rom. 11:33, 9:19-21

How long? (46-51)

• Psalmist asks for deliverance and soon.

• He recalls former times, BUT consider Isa. 55:8-9

•Vs. 52 – Believed to actually be conclusion of book 3

David’s Throne

• His throne was to last – Jer. 33:14-18

• Spoken of the promised Messiah - Isa. 9:6-7

David’s Throne• Christ now reigning on David’s

throne – Acts 2:29-36

•1 Cor. 15:25-26, Heb. 1:3, 8; 10:11-13

• Our psalm promised, (33) His lovingkindness or faithfulness would not fail – in Christ it has not!

David’s Throne

• Finally, notice Jeremiah 22:30

• Spoken of Jehoiachin (Jeconiah), His descendants would NOT prosper sitting on the throne of David in Judah (cf. Matt. 1:11)
