Could you be this year’s champions?

This year contestants will be competing once

again for first place in two of CLIC Sargent’s most

challenging events.

70 Wild Miles

70 Wild Miles is a 47-mile cycle, 10-mile kayak and

13-mile run. Last year Gerry Murphy won the solo event

in 5 hours 20 minutes. The winning team on the day

was Dog Leap, with an impressive time of 5 hours 6

minutes. This year’s event will take place on 22 May.

Dragon Boat Race

Last year’s Dragon Boat Race winners were the team

from Bombardier. This year’s event will take place on

13 June on the River Lagan. Could you recruit friends or

colleagues to get a team of 12-17 people together and

win the crown?

What an exciting start it’s been to 2010. We

are pleased to announce that CLIC Sargent is

Tesco Charity of the Year 2010. So you will

see CLIC Sargent featured in stores across

the UK – read more later in this newsletter.

Watch out for over 600 people running for

CLIC Sargent at the Virgin London Marathon

on 25th April, where we are the official

charity partner.

You’ll read about how important your

everyday support is too – from raising money

in your own community to taking part in an

event. Every penny does count… and

there are new events listed on the back

cover, which we hope you’ll be able to join

this year. Or maybe you’ve got some great

fundraising ideas of your own!

Your ongoing support will underpin our work

for children and young people with cancer

and their families in 2010. And you can see

Fundraising challenges for 2010

We are delighted to announce that CLIC Sargent is Tesco

Charity of the Year 2010. This partnership aims to raise £5

million to help fund children’s specialist cancer nurses across the

UK, so that children with cancer can spend more time at home.

Throughout the year, you’ll see our posters around Tesco stores

– and keep a look out for special product promotions donating

a proportion of sales to CLIC Sargent – it’s a great way to support us while shopping for special

Tesco greetings cards, Tesco in-car air fresheners, Orla Kiely bags for life and Canterbury Jack

beer. Tesco Bank will also make a donation every time someone uses a cash machine at Tesco.

And on 10 and 11 December there will be a collection for CLIC Sargent outside every Tesco store.

We need you to help us raise £200,000 by taking part in these national bucket collection days at

your local store.

Virgin London MarathonWatch out for CLIC Sargent at the Virgin

London Marathon on 25th April. We’ve

over 600 runners, including some famous

celebrity faces!

Running for CLIC Sargent will be TV’s

Lorraine Kelly and Jessie Wallace

and Formula 1’s Eddie Jordan.

Updated look for CLIC SargentYou may have noticed that this

is one of the first items printed

with our updated brand. Why

the change? It’s to make it

easier for our service users and

supporters to see who we are,

and what we do.

This work was done in-house at

CLIC Sargent, involving children

and young people.


Many children with cancer feel less afraid if

they understand their illness and treatment.

And the same is true for their sisters,

brothers and friends.

As Lymphoma is the third main type of

cancer in children, we have expanded our

series of popular storybooks with Tom has

Lymphoma.

We’ve also recorded audio-books of Lucy has

a Tumour and Mary has a Brain Tumour, read

by CLIC Sargent patron and actor Duncan

Pow. Duncan says

“I’m delighted to be

involved in such a

worthwhile project –

these will enable more

children to understand

these types of cancer;

teachers can play them in a

school assembly for example.”

New home to open in LondonOur ninth Home from Home – Paul’s House

– will open later this year. With 15 family

rooms, four lounges and three kitchens, it’s

our biggest home yet.

It’s welcome news for families who have a

child being treated at the nearby University

College Hospital. Over 65% live more than

one hour away, so parents and siblings are

making long journeys or staying in B&Bs

simply to be together at this difficult time.

Having Paul’s House, somewhere to stay

close by for free, will make a huge

Billy’s House in Nottingham has

accommodated 35 families who have

a child being treated at the nearby

Queen’s Medical Centre.

New storybooks – out now

Olivia updateRemember Olivia, the little girl we featured in last year’s

newsletter? At the time we went to print Olivia’s family had

been told that she wouldn’t recover. A year later Olivia is

doing remarkably well. She is back at school and enjoys

riding the bike she got for Christmas. Mum Karen says,

“It’s a joy to see her riding about on it – things were very

different this time last year.”


In 2009 we introduced EPOS (Electronic Point

of Sale) tills in all CLIC Sargent shops so we

could process Gift Aid and reclaim tax when

we sold goods that had been donated.

Gift Aid is a government scheme which helps

charities boost the value of donations by

28%. Now that we can earn this on

donations of clothes and bric-a-brac that you

bring into our charity shops, we could raise

as much as an extra £100,000 every year for

our work for children with cancer. To help us,

you simply sign up as a Gift Aid donor when

you bring donations to any of our shops.

That’s it!

A good-quality large bag of donated items

Helping children spend more time at home and less time in hospital

We know that children with cancer want to

be at home as much as possible, doing

normal things like going to school and

spending time with their family and friends.

In March, CLIC Sargent launched a fantastic

new partnership with Tesco that

aims to raise £5 million and

help make this happen.

The money raised will

help fund CLIC Sargent

children’s specialist

cancer nurses across

the UK. Cancer

treatment can last for years

– these nurses will help

children spend more time at home

by co-ordinating all the care they need

when they get there.

Liz Leigh is a CLIC Sargent Nurse in Oxford.

She says, “My role is to bridge the gap

between hospital and home.

“When families leave the safety net of the

hospital it can be a struggle. They need to

remember a huge amount of information

about their child’s care and it can be

emotionally hard.”

“But getting home is so positive and I am

there to provide emotional support as well as

co-ordinating all the specialist care children

need when they get there.”

Liz supports 13-year-old Sophia and her

family, who is having treatment for bone

cancer. Sophia sees Liz as one of the family –

someone to talk to about chemotherapy,

school or anything that is on her mind. She

says, “The best bit about being at home is

being able to go to school again and catch

up with all my friends.”

But not every family has the benefit of

someone like Liz to help them cope and

make sure they get the right support. The

money raised by the Tesco partnership will

make going home possible for more children

with the support of CLIC Sargent children’s

specialist cancer nurses.

You can get involved through a range of

product promotions in Tesco stores which

will be donating a proportion of their sales to

£5 Means a specialist nurse could spend time with the family of a child with cancer, and explain a simple medical procedure to them.

£50 Means a specialist nurse could coordinate home help for a family whose child is having treatment, arranging for someone to do the shopping or take their other children to school.

£100 We could arrange a visit by a specialist nurse to a child’s school, or their brownies or sports club, to talk to their teachers and friends about what’s happening and how they could help.

£10,000 Means we could help 200 parents to liaise with their employers to ensure their employers understand what is happening and are aware of the parents’ rights to time off work and flexible working hours.

£100,000 1,000 children with cancer could be visited at home by a specialist nurse. This would help their family to feel less isolated and make sure they have everything they need.

More Than My IllnessCLIC Sargent will shortly publish a follow-up to last year’s

More Than My Illness report. It focuses on the challenges

of ensuring effective community-based services and

support for young people aged 16-24 with cancer. Once

the report is published, CLIC Sargent will use the key

recommendations in ongoing campaigning work.

Working for cancer survivorsThe National Cancer Survivorship Initiative

(NCSI) was set up to consider a range of

approaches to survivor care. CLIC Sargent is

playing a leading role in the Children and

Young People’s Workstream and is:

carrying out a study on The Impact of

Cancer on a Child’s World

one of ten ‘test communities’ funded

by the Department of Health to explore

new approaches to care for children

and young people living with and

beyond cancer

leading a review into how current

policy meets the needs of young cancer

survivors and where the gaps are.

Survivorship is a significant issue for young

people living with and beyond cancer.

CLIC Sargent is committed to understanding

the long-term adverse effects of cancer. And

we want to campaign for changes that will

reduce, and where possible eliminate, the

physical, emotional and social impact of

cancer on children’s lives.


Hi, I’m Bea, aged 12. Me and my family have

raised money for CLIC Sargent since January

2009 when I was diagnosed with leukaemia.

We’ve done a head shave, my neighbour

organised a cake sale, and my grannie sells

homemade chutneys. We’ve also had

donations; we recently got £250 from my

step dad’s friend.

All the money, over £8,500 now, goes to my

Especially For You fund. My website is named

Bea’s Fund. It feels really nice to watch the

money grow because CLIC Sargent have

done so much for me and my family. On 2nd

July, my Mum and Step Dad are organising a

Charity Golf Day at Okehampton Golf Club,

where all profits will go to my fund at

CLIC Sargent too.

The importance of an up-to-date WillIn January 2010 we ran our first ever Will Awareness Month, promoting the importance

of an up-to-date Will. A large number of people supported us, including TV presenter

Gaby Roslin, who made a short video for our website.

An up-to-date Will is important because it’s the only way to make your wishes crystal

clear. We understand that your family, friends and loved ones will come first but we

hope you can remember CLIC Sargent in some way too.

One in six of the children we support is funded by gifts in Wills. Such a gift costs you

nothing now, but could make a huge difference to children’s lives in the future.

Boxing Day dip

Remember the ice and snow we experienced

over Christmas? Now imagine jumping into

Castlewellan Lake on Boxing Day, in the worst

of the freezing weather. Well, that’s how more

than 30 brave CLIC Sargent supporters spent

26 December 2009, helping to raise £5,000 for

local children with cancer.

Youth update

CLIC Sargent’s Young People’s Service has had

a busy time recently. Highlights have included

attending the ‘Young Achievers’ Ball at

Stormont, spending a weekend at Malcolm

Sargent House in Prestwick, attending a track

day with club GTINI and getting the

chance to race around the track in a

Ferrari! Members of our Youth Forum

were also invited to attend the

first-ever Youth Heath Fair at Belfast

City Hall, where they met celebrities

Jessie Wallace and Dame Mary Peters at

the Runher women’s race.

Our Youth Development Worker supports

young people up to and including the age of

24 throughout their illness, with one-to-one

support and regular group activities. Cancer

can leave many young people feeling isolated

and different from their friends; the youth

service can help rebuild their self esteem

and confidence and help to support

them to come to terms with the late

effects of cancer.
