Hi and welcome to our summer edition. Perhaps unsurprisingly it has been a busy period for NetSupport, building up to the education season internationally. We have had the latest release of NetSupport School with Windows 8 support and a range of enhancements, the addition of support for Chrome OS students and of course recently, our new Android Student for tablets. We find ourselves in a fairly unique position now in terms of the scope of our education platform.

Education is but one string to our bow; NetSupport Manager has seen a hugely busy year with all sorts of updates including new support from iOS and Android, new Mac and Linux clients and an all-new Mac Control. Our Development elves are currently flat out on a great version 12 release ready for the autumn, as well as other product enhancements.

In this edition you will see plenty of exhibitions we have travelled the globe to attend, lots of new customers and of course, lots of new partners joining the NetSupport family. It is with sadness though that I have to announce the loss of one key member from our family, Bob Love. Bob was financial director at NetSupport from our earliest years until his retirement in 2008. Bob was a true gent and respected by all who knew him. We send our thoughts to his family and are very grateful to have had the pleasure of knowing him.

NOW with Android support

NetSupport School Student for Android

The growing adoption of the latest platforms and devices in the modern classroom is definitely keeping the NetSupport techs busy!

Of course, it’s vital that classroom management software keeps pace with the changing IT landscape and, hot on the heels of the recent launch of our Tutor Assistant app, we are delighted to be able to extend our mobile support to cater for students using Android tablets.

Available to download from Google Play and for use in your existing NetSupport School-managed classroom environment, once installed on your students’ Android tablets, teachers can interact with and support students from the traditional desktop Tutor application.

Key features:

• Student Register: The teacher can request standard and/or custom information from each student at the start of each class and create a detailed register from the information provided.

• Connecting to Students: The teacher can either browse for student tablets (from their desktop application) or allow students to connect directly to the relevant class from their Android device.

• Lesson Objectives: If provided by the teacher, once connected, students are presented with details of the current lesson, together with overall objectives and their expected learning outcomes.

• Sending Messages: The teacher can broadcast messages to one, selected, or all tablet devices. Students receive an audible and visual alert when a message is received and they can then be viewed and managed by the student.

• Requesting Help: Students can discreetly alert the teacher when they require assistance. This sends an alert to the teacher’s desktop, enabling them to interact with the student concerned. In addition, a red toolbar appears at the top of the student’s tablet, enabling the teacher to easily identify students in need of help as they move around the classroom.

• Chat: Both the student and the teacher can initiate a Chat session and participate in group discussions.

The number one choice for IT educators worldwide, NetSupport School delivers the tools you need to help maximise the effectiveness of computer-led teaching and now you can utilise the power of NetSupport School in a Google Chromebook education environment.

For use in an existing or new NetSupport-managed classroom, the NetSupport School Student app extension can be installed on each student Chromebook running Google Chrome OS. From the teacher’s desktop they can then connect to each Chromebook system enabling them to monitor the screens and interact with each student quickly and efficiently.

New in the latest Chromebook version:

• Show the teacher’s screen. Ensure student attention and focus when presenting by ‘showing’ the teacher’s desktop to selected student screens.

• Perform a show to students in a browser tab, or in full screen mode.

• Multi-monitor support. If the teacher is using multiple monitors, select an individual screen to show to students or show all.

• Show an application at the teacher to all or selected students.

• Remote Control. As well as discreetly monitoring the students’ screens (Watch Mode), teachers can now interact with the students’ Chromebooks with real-time remote control (Share Mode). Ideal for providing 1:1 help and support to students as needed.

• Chat: The teacher can open a discussion session with selected or all students, enter their comments and share with the rest of the class.

IT professionals and educators across Belarus are set to benefit from a new partnership between NetSupport and local IT reseller Tibis. The company is the latest recruit to NetSupport’s partner programme and further extends our geographical reach across Eastern Europe.

One of the areas that Tibis specialises in is the installation of language lab solutions into local schools and this ties in perfectly with one of the key features of NetSupport’s classroom management software.

NetSupport School’s Audio Monitoring capabilities will complement the Tibis solution perfectly. The growing trend towards ‘audible’ learning, particularly in language teaching, opens up many more avenues of distraction for students. NetSupport School’s real time Audio Monitoring component arms teachers with the tools they need to ensure they know instantly what the student is listening to through their headphones or what’s being said into their microphone.

One click on the Audio icon and the teacher is presented with a view of the entire class. Individual student thumbnails make it easy to identify which machines have audio activity, visual indicators showing whether the microphone and/or headset are in use. Teachers can conduct a two-way chat with individual students without disrupting the rest of the class and key learning points and topic detail can be recorded for later playback to the individual student or broadcast to the rest of the class.

Forest School turns to NetSupport technology

Named after its near neighbour, Epping Forest, the Forest School is a large, vibrant school with more than 1250 students aged four to 18. The school has recently installed a combination of NetSupport tools to help with the daily challenge of supporting its expanding IT infrastructure.

NetSupport ServiceDesk will help the school’s IT team streamline and organise its helpdesk services. The web-based solution gives the user community instant access via their web browser to an easy-to-use incident-logging portal. The individual then has the ability to track progress in real time and even use the self-service option to search for an answer to the issue before reporting it.

For the IT team itself, the product’s automated workflow features ensure incidents are assigned, prioritised and actioned quickly and efficiently. A wealth of real-time status reports help gauge the effectiveness of how support requests are being managed and maintained.

Ensuring the 100% availability of mission critical systems is of course key to the success of any organisation and in a school environment teachers certainly expect their classroom computers to be always available for teaching.

With NetSupport Manager, the Forest School’s IT techs can provide 24/7 support on or off site. Secure remote control across LAN, WAN or internet combines with a range of powerful desktop management tools to ensure key systems are fully maintained and operational.

The added bonus for teachers is that a full working copy of leading classroom management solution, NetSupport School, is included free of charge.

Tibis set to bring the NetSupport range to Belarus

Long-standing NetSupport customers, The Tavistock and Portman and Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trusts, are to continue managing their IT estates with NetSupport’s technology, following the renewal of their maintenance agreements. The IT team at Lancashire uses multi-platform Remote Control solution NetSupport Manager to deliver 24/7 support to key systems and servers across the organisation. Tavistock employs a combination of NetSupport tools to help manage its IT assets. IT asset management solution, NetSupport DNA, provides an instant overview of the hardware and software in use across the Trust enabling the management team to make informed decisions about upgrades and the rollout of new technology. The support team also uses NetSupport Manager to provide instant remote support to mission-critical systems that require attention and NetSupport ServiceDesk, the web-based ITIL Service Management tool, makes it easy for end users to log incidents and for the helpdesk team to manage, track and prioritise their assigned tasks. www.lancashirecare.nhs.uk

NetSupport School extends support for Windows 8

Launched in May 2013, NetSupport School version 11.20 brought a host of new functionality, amongst which was its extended Windows 8 (Metro) support.

Teachers can now “quick-launch” Windows 8 apps on student machines in a single click, and also remotely close them.

Internet monitoring and control is also extended to include managing students using the Internet Explorer “app” on the Windows start screen, forcing search engine safe search modes on as well as extending approved and blocked URL lists.

Centrally, the NetSupport School Technician’s Console has also been extended to allow application policies to include Windows 8 apps and internet restrictions.

Finally, the network deployment utility provided with NetSupport School has been extended to support Windows 8-specific deployments.
