2013 SEPTEMBER

19 AND 21

BEETHOVEN’S EMPEROR CONCERTOSEP 19 — Thursday at 7:30 p.m. C P SEP 21 — Saturday at 8:00 p.m. C P

The Cleveland Orchestra Fabio Luisi, conductor Hélène Grimaud, piano Maureen McKay, soprano

BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Emperor”) MAHLER Symphony No. 4

The new season opens with works by two of music’s greatest masters. When Beethoven’s final piano concerto was premiered, it was hailed by the press as “without doubt one of the most original, imaginative, most effective but also one of the most difficult of all concertos.” Opening with sleigh bells and concluding with a child’s delightedly graceful vision of heaven, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is his sunniest, most optimistic work.

The Beethoven Piano ConcertosBeethoven’s piano concertos are among his most beloved works. They are monumental achievements, large-scale and virtuosic in scope. Join four of today’s most brilliant pianists — Hélène Grimaud (September 19-21), Mitsuko Uchida (November 5-7), Radu Lupu (January 16-18), and Imogen Cooper (April 24-26) as The Cleveland Orchestra performs a full cycle of all five Beethoven piano concertos across the season.

(Pop culture note: Grimaud’s critically lauded recording of the “Emperor” Concerto was chosen by iTunes for its new “Classical Essentials” series.)

LIADOV Eight Russian Folk Songs* TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No. 1 PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 3

Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto has become the standard against which all virtuosos must measure themselves. The grandeur of its opening chords, its breathtakingly passionate melodies, and the pyrotechnics of its finale are to pianists what Everest is to the mountain climber. The concert concludes with Prokofiev’s Third Symphony, created on themes from his opera The Fiery Angel.

FAURÉ Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande BRITTEN Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings FRANCK Symphony in D minor

In his time, César Franck was a renowned organist who presided for decades at the console at St. Clotilde’s Church in Paris. The sumptuous sound of the organ, swelling rank by rank, is apparent in the rich orchestral textures and pealing brass climaxes in his symphony. Benjamin Britten’s Serenade is a lovely, evocative setting of poems by English authors spanning from the 15th to the 19th centuries.

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Britten’s birth.

This concert juxtaposes three contrasting works from Central European composers of three different centuries. Immersed in the musical traditions of Dvořák’s homeland, his Violin Concerto delights in spicy folk-like elements —full of character, nimbleness, and lyrical drama. FALL FESTIVAL

FATE & FREEDOM:MUSIC OF BEETHOVEN & SHOSTAKOVICHOCT 22-26In partnership with the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque

Experience a week exploring the highly tempestuous and deeply emotional intermingling of music and politics. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra take a fascinating look at two highly autobiographical composers, whose lives and careers were separated by over a century, yet whose works demonstrate how artists of two eras wrestled with themes of freedom, as well as personal and collective liberty and politics. The festival includes three concerts, plus two film screenings in partnership with the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. Pre-film and pre-concert talks, and a chamber music performance by members of The Cleveland Orchestra, are also featured.

Listen to Franz Welser-Möst

“Thus fate knocks at the door!” Whether Beethoven actually said this about the four opening notes of his Fifth no one really knows, but these notes are perhaps the most widely recognized in music. No other piece quite celebrates the sheer power of music—it transports us minor key to major, fate to glory, darkness into light. JANÁČEK The Cunning Little Vixen

MAY 17 — Saturday at 8:00 p.m. MAY 20 — Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. MAY 22 — Thursday at 7:30 p.m. MAY 24 — Saturday at 2:00 p.m.Don’t miss the opera event of the season – a compelling new production of Leoš Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen created specifically for Severance Hall! Presented with innovative and original animation, this world premiere production plumbs the depths of human experience in a charming tale of love, peril, freedom, and family. On the surface, the story is about childish things, but underneath human emotions boil over and burst apart between the “animals of the forest” and their human interlocutors. The opera’s starring role, portrayed for Cleveland by favorite Czech soprano Martina Janková, wends her way through life’s cycles of learning and danger, love and happiness. Janáček’s score from 1924 mixes lyrical symphonic writing with intriguing rhythmic touches, lovingly combined with the songful serenity and energetic pulse of Moravian folk music. Don’t miss this unique, made-for-Cleveland presentation!
