NEW THIS SEASON!UNDER 18s FREE PROGRAM EXPANDED“Under 18s Free” has been expanded into the 2013-14 season to include Family Concerts, PNC Musical Rainbow Programs, and all Friday and Sunday Cleveland Orchestra classical concerts. The “Under 18s Free” program offers free tickets (one per regular-priced adult paid admission) to young people ages 7-17 (aged 3 and up for Musical Rainbows). Tickets for concerts eligible under this program must be requested through the Severance Hall Ticket Office and are not available online. Month and year of birth of each child is required at time of ticket request.

“Under 18s Free” is a program of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Center for Future Audiences. The Center, created with a lead endowment gift from the Maltz Family Foundation, was established to fund programs to develop new generations of audiences for Cleveland Orchestra concerts in Northeastern Ohio. Since the inception of the “Under 18s Free” program in 2011, more than 39,000 young people have attended concerts at Blossom and Severance Hall.

The new season opens with works by two of music’s greatest masters. When Beethoven’s final piano concerto was premiered, it was hailed by the press as “without doubt one of the most original, imaginative, most effective but also one of the most difficult of all concertos.” Opening with sleigh bells and concluding with a child’s delightedly graceful vision of heaven, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is his sunniest, most optimistic work.

The Beethoven Piano ConcertosBeethoven’s piano concertos are among his most beloved works. They are monumental achievements, large-scale and virtuosic in scope. Join four of today’s most brilliant pianists — Hélène Grimaud (September 19-21), Mitsuko Uchida (November 5-7), Radu Lupu (January 16-18), and Imogen Cooper (April 24-26) as The Cleveland Orchestra performs a full cycle of all five Beethoven piano concertos across the season.

FATE & FREEDOM:MUSIC OF BEETHOVEN & SHOSTAKOVICHOCT 22-26In partnership with the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque

Experience a week exploring the highly tempestuous and deeply emotional intermingling of music and politics. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra take a fascinating look at two highly autobiographical composers, whose lives and careers were separated by over a century, yet whose works demonstrate how artists of two eras wrestled with themes of freedom, as well as personal and collective liberty and politics. The festival includes three concerts, plus two film screenings in partnership with the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. Pre-film and pre-concert talks, and a chamber music performance by members of The Cleveland Orchestra, are also featured.

A true holiday favorite, this comedy classic features renowned composer John Williams’s delightful score performed live by The Cleveland Orchestra. Macaulay Culkin stars as Kevin McCallister, an 8-year-old boy accidentally left behind when his family leaves for Christmas vacation, and who must defend his home against two bungling thieves. Presented with innovative and original animation, this world premiere production plumbs the depths of human experience in a charming tale of love, peril, freedom, and family. On the surface, the story is about childish things, but underneath human emotions boil over and burst apart between the “animals of the forest” and their human interlocutors. The opera’s starring role, portrayed for Cleveland by favorite Czech soprano Martina Janková, wends her way through life’s cycles of learning and danger, love and happiness. Janáček’s score from 1924 mixes lyrical symphonic writing with intriguing rhythmic touches, lovingly combined with the songful serenity and energetic pulse of Moravian folk music. Don’t miss this unique, made-for-Cleveland presentation!

Dining Service begins three hours before each evening or Sunday afternoon concert and immediately following Friday matinee performances.
