CLEVELAND CAVALIERS TEAM NOTES (CONTINUED) HOME D: At Quicken Loans Arena in 2013-14, the Cavs held opponents to the 3rd-lowest FG% in the league

at home at .428. The Cavs were also 15-2 when they held opponents to under .400 shooting from the field, including 12-2 at The Q.

NEON DION: Dion Waiters appeared in 70 games (24 starts) in 2013-14 and averaged 15.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 29.6 minutes per game. On the

season, Waiters had 24 games of at least 20 points, including a pair of 30-point performances (Dec. 6 at ATL & March 20 vs. OKC). Waiters put up strong numbers in the final 15 games of the season as a starter (21.2 points, 4.3 assists, career-high four straight 20-point games from 3/20-25) and scored at least 20 points in nine of those 15 games.

RECORD-SETTING NIGHT: In an 87-81 win over Orlando on Jan. 2, Anderson Varejao tied

the franchise’s single-game record with 25 rebounds (Rick Roberson on 3/4/72 at HOU). Varejao also had other numerous achievements during the course of the season:

Among East leaders in 2013-14, he ranked 4th

in rebounds per game (9.7, 13th

in NBA), 6th

in offensive rebounds per game (2.9, 15th in NBA) and 6th in defensive rebounds per game (6.8, 15th in NBA).

In 21 contests from Dec. 26-Feb. 9, averaged 12.6 rebounds to go along with 10.0 points, 3.3 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.4 minutes over that stretch.

Against Dallas on Feb. 3, Anderson Varejao tallied 10 points and five rebounds to become just the 4th player in Cavs history to surpass 4,000 points and 4,000 rebounds for his career. He joins Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Brad Daugherty and John Williams as the only players in in the team’s record book to reach those marks.

In the 88-82 win against the Clippers on Dec. 7, Varejao grabbed 17 rebounds (five offensive) in 23 minutes off the bench. Less than three weeks later, he again grabbed 17 rebounds off the bench in the Dec. 26 contest against Atlanta. Prior to this season, Varejao was also the last Cavs bench player to have at least 17 rebounds in a single game when he grabbed 18 boards on January 11, 2008 against Charlotte.

Varejao recorded at least 10 rebounds 30 times in 2013-14, including two games of at least 20 rebounds.

CAVS BACKCOURT TAKES OVER N’AWLINS: Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters each had strong

performances during the 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans. On Feb. 14, Waiters led Team Hill to a 142-136 win in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge after putting up a team-high 31 points on 10-14 (.714) shooting, including 4-6 (.667) from deep, a team-high seven assists and a team-high three steals in 22 minutes off the bench. Just two days later (Feb. 16), Irving made his start in the 2014 NBA All-Star Game and took home MVP honors after he tallied a team-high 31 points (15 in the 4th quarter) on 14-17 (.824) shooting, including 3-6 (.500) from long range, a game-high 14 assists and five rebounds in 34 minutes. After leading the East to a 163-155 win, he became the 2nd youngest player and 2nd Cavalier to win the award (LeBron James). In All-Star Game history, the only other player to record more than 10 field goals and 10 assists in a single game was Dwyane Wade in 2010 (12-16 shooting, 11 assists). Irving is the 1st player to have at least 31 points and 14 assists in the event. He had 24 points of his 31 points come in the second half, tying Glen Rice (1997) for most points scored in a in a single half in All-Star history.

DELLY FROM DEEP: All but three of Matthew Dellavedova’s 57 total three-pointers in 2013-14 had been in games

where he came off the bench. Among rookie bench players, only Tim Hardaway Jr. had more. See the box on the right for most triples made by rookie reserves last season. Dellavedova also recorded back-to-back double-doubles off the bench on March 20 vs. OKC (11 pts, 10 asts) and March 22 vs. HOU (14 pts, 10 asts). The last Cavs player to record consecutive point-assist double-doubles off the bench happened over 23 years ago (John Morton, 3/14/91-3/16/91). Against Detroit on April 9, Dellavedova came off the bench to distribute a career-high 12 assists and added 14 points, becoming just the 2nd Cavaliers rookie to come off the bench and hand out at least 12 assists in a game (Terrell Brandon, 13 assists on March 22, 1992 against Atlanta.

KYRIE-DICULOUS: Kyrie Irving owned the highest scoring average among Eastern Conference point guards at 20.8 points (2nd among all NBA PGs) and was one of only

six players in the NBA with averages of at least 20 points and six assists per game in 2013-14 (S. Curry, L. James, J. Harden, R. Westbrook & I. Thomas). Irving also scored at least 20 points in 38 contests in 2013-14, including 30 points or more 10 times and 40 points or more three times. Check out additional notes on the 2014 NBA All-Star Game MVP:

In 2013-14, Irving appeared in 71 games (all starts) with averages of 20.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals in 35.2 minutes per game. It was the second-straight season that Kyrie Irving averaged at least 20 points and five assists per game. He is only the 2nd Cavs player to every average those numbers in multiple seasons (L. James).

Irving scored a league-high 55 points in overtime this past season and his 7.9 overtime points per game were the 2nd-most in the NBA (minimum: 2 OT games). His 12 points in the second overtime on Dec. 26 versus Atlanta was one point shy of tying the most points scored in a single overtime in franchise history (LeBron James, 13 points in second OT on Jan. 24, 2007 vs. PHI).

Irving was also solid in the fourth quarter with an average of 6.1 points (8th in NBA).

In a 99-79 victory over the Utah Jazz on Feb. 28, Irving notched his first career triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.

In the win over Milwaukee on Dec. 20, he had 39 points on 13-25 (.520) shooting, six assists and a career-high four blocks in 42 minutes. Since blocks became an official stat in 1973-74, Irving is the only Cavs guard to post 39 points and four blocks in a single game.

For just the 3rd

time in Cavaliers history, a Cavs player tallied at least 40 points, nine assists and four steals in a single game when Irving put up those numbers against Atlanta on Dec. 26. The only other times that feat was accomplished in Cavaliers history were March, 5, 2008 (LeBron James, 50 points, 10 assists, four steals at NYK) and March 13, 1979 (Campy Russell, 41 points, nine assists, four steals vs. PHX).

Versus the Trail Blazers on Dec. 17, Irving put up his 4th double-double of 2013-14 with 25 points, 10 assists and zero turnovers, becoming the first Cavalier with those totals since March 19, 2009 (L. James).

In the Dec. 10 win over the Knicks, he became the first Cavs player since World B. Free on March 29, 1986 (43 points, 11 assists, 0 turnovers) to tally at least 37 points and 11 assists, while having one or fewer turnovers in a single game. Before Irving, the last NBA player to accomplish that feat was Kobe Bryant on December 29, 2009 (44 points, 11 assists, one turnover versus Golden State).

In a 127-125 double-overtime win over Philadelphia on Nov. 9, he became the 3rd Cavs player to ever tally 39 points, five rebounds and 12 assists in a single game (LeBron James and Mark Price).

NBA D-LEAGUE AFFILIATE - CANTON CHARGE

CANTON CHARGE UPDATE: The Canton Charge, the NBA Development League team owned and operated by the Cleveland Cavaliers, had its third straight playoff season in

2013-14. The Charge were eliminated from the NBA Development League playoff quarterfinal round against Sioux Falls Skyforce, 2-1. The playoff exit came after Canton’s 28-22 regular season mark, the second-best in franchise history. Canton’s new head coach, Jordi Fernandez, will lead the Charge, who led the D-League in field goal percentage (.479) and opponent points per game (101.5) last season. Canton recently finalized their training camp roster in preparation for the upcoming 2014-15 season. The group consists of 16 players with various collegiate and professional experience assembled through the 2014 NBA Development League Draft, returning players, local open tryouts, and the affiliate player rule. Six returning players will be back in Canton for training camp. Antoine Agudio has been with the franchise since its inaugural season, while William Buford, Cavs guard Will Cherry, Justin Johnson, Brandon Paul, and Steve Weingarten all spent time with the Charge in 2013-14. Chris Crawford and Stephen Holt both were in NBA training camp with the Cleveland Cavaliers last month and were added to the Charge roster via the affiliate rule. Levi Giese and Jordan Swing earned their invitations to training camp through the Charge’s local tryouts in September. Canton’s 12th overall selection in the 2014 NBA D-League Draft, Michael Dunigan, headlines the six players chosen on Saturday. Coaches will submit an opening day roster of 10 players on Thursday, November 13th as the Charge open the 2014-15 season at home against the Delaware 87ers on Saturday, November 15th at 7:00 p.m. For more news on the Canton Charge, head to CantonCharge.com.

QUICKEN LOANS ARENA AND GATEWAY NEW HD SCOREBOARD: Seeing the Cavs in action at The Q this season is going to be BIG. Actually, it’s going to be a

WHOLE LOT BIGGER when fans find themselves sitting in front of 5,550 total square feet of LED technology, aka, the largest HD scoreboard in any arena in the country! Quicken Loans Arena’s brand new center-hung scoreboard, armed with the fan-favorite flaming sabers, and its new audio/visual systems made their collective debut vs. the New York Knicks on Thursday, October 30th. ANC Sports Enterprises, LLC created the next generation of arena entertainment that will make the fan experience inside The Q unmatched by any other venue in the country. The new HD scoreboard and the related audio and video systems are part of Cuyahoga County and Gateway’s updates to Quicken Loans Arena and are at the core of how Cleveland can aggressively compete for events such as the 2016 Republican National Convention. As it has in the past, The Q will continue to be a key part of community-wide efforts to attract major national and international events to Cleveland, including a future NBA All-Star game and more NCAA tournament and championship events that bring millions of dollars into the city and region. The four-sided, center-hung scoreboard has four enormous HD video screens that are tilted and uniquely curved to provide optimal viewing angles for all fans whether they are seated in the front row on the floor, or in the upper level in Loudville. The two sideline screens measure 31.50’ high x 56.69’ wide and feature greater-than-HD video. The two high-resolution baseline screens measure 29.92’ high x 33.07’ wide. In addition to the new scoreboard, The Q will be illuminated with a grand total of more than 11,682 square feet of new LED displays that have been installed in the arena’s seating bowl and concourses. This included updating the four corner boards and 360-degree fascia ribbon in the seating area and replacing traditional backlit signage on the concourses with high resolution LED technology. The new technology will be synchronized through ANC’s vSOFT™ operating system to create an immersive experience for fans. An all-new control system, for both the scoreboard and LED displays, was installed to allow full integration of live video, team and player statistics, social media information, fan messages, closed captioning of arena announcements, and more. The new sound system will provide fans with cutting-edge clarity that replicates touring concert technology. Features include advanced audio digital processing, six line array speaker clusters and additional speakers under the scoreboard. The sound system was designed and installed by Parsons Audio. In January 2015, The Q’s all-new state of the art HD video production control room will be up and running. The system will feature a 6 ME Grass Valley video switcher, five cameras, including two wireless cameras for crowd interaction and contests, two Dyno six channel replay units, including super-slo options, and four scoreboard mounted robotic cameras to capture unique views of game action and additional crowd shots. The scoreboard mounted cameras, the most in the NBA, will provide multiple views of critical plays for both fans and referees. This HD video production system was designed by Comprehensive Technical Group (CTG), one of the leading systems integrators in the country, in concert with the Cavaliers’ QTV Video Engineering Team.
