Abundant Life What a wonderful promise we have from Jesus: He came that we might have life and have it more abundantly! Our Gospel today reminds us that Jesus only wants what is good for people. He desires that people be happy and content in life. He does not promise that our lives will be free of problems, but that His presence and love will be enough to sustain us through the difficult times. So many of us have experienced difficult times recently and the invitation from the Lord to come to Him could not come at a more appropriate time! Some people go through life never really satisfied. They are always looking for something more. They have a restless spirit and do not know how to satisfy their deepest longings. If people accept Jesus Christ into their lives and adhere to what He asks of them, they can be assured that their lives will be lived abundantly; not just tolerating existence, but having a zest for life in this world with their minds and hearts focused on the life to come. St. Augustine once said, “Our hearts are restless, O Lord, until they rest in You.” The zest for life character from the “Auntie Mame” movie, once said, “Life is a banquet and most people are starving to death.” She said this from a secular viewpoint, but how well we can apply this to living a life of faith with Jesus. Our Lord offers us so much, and yet so few people really accept all that He wishes to give us. Let us enter the gate that Jesus opens for us, and accept the abundant life that He offers us. Life without Jesus can only bring pain, unhappiness and dissatisfaction. Let us remember the words of our Lord, “Whoever enters through Me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.” (John 10:9) Father David

A Letter from Fr. David to the Parishioners

Dear Parishioners,

It is my prayer and hope that you doing well during these difficult and challenging times. So many of

you have commented via email on how meaningful the “on line” liturgies have been for your spiritual

nourishment. Our parish staff has been working hard to make sure that we can offer you the best

spiritual materials available as well as communicating to you the latest news regarding the Church

and its guidelines during this time.

Please know that all of the scheduled Masses are being celebrated privately both by Fr. Sebahar and

myself. Your intentions are always included in these Masses. If you have any prayer requests that

you would like prayed for during these Masses, please go to: [email protected] and write

out your intentions. I check the list daily.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank you for your continued financial support of the parish. It is

truly inspiring to see our parish family being faithful to stewardship despite financial difficulties so

many people have these days. I can also assure you that we are trying to keep our expenses down as

much as possible.

Please know that you are remembered in my Masses and prayers every day. As St. Padre Pio tells us,

“Pray, hope and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.”

First Prayer: O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith.

“Protectress of the Roman people”, you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Second Prayer: “We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.

In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health. Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and

support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

Volunteers Needed for our Mother’s Day Flower Delivery to Homebound Parishioners

Each year, the St. James Council of Catholic Women volunteers bring spring flowers, friendly conversation and a prayer card to the homebound of the parish. Volunteers deliver the flowers to our parishioners who are ill or in need of some cheer.

The deliveries traditionally take place before Mother’s Day (May 10, 2020) but due to the coronavirus pandemic, we must adhere to the guidelines of the State of Illinois. We must practice social distancing and stay at home, if possible. When the time is right, we will proceed with this wonderful program. So, if you want to help-OR-if you know of a parishioner in need of a delivery, please contact Susan Birns @ 630-469-9575.

Celebrating Our Parish Patron, Saint James as well as Saint Philip on May 3rd

Call Philip the gospel’s “Answer Man.” “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed Jesus “the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets” (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8). Jesus had three last questions for Philip: “You still don’t know me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10).

Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his murderers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22).

St. James Youth Ministry

We sure do miss our super awesome teens!! And while it's nice to keep our regular meetings going through Zoom each Sunday night AND our Bible study on Wednesdays, there's nothin' that says lovin' like face to face contact. Summer is still a bit up in the air, but we PROMISE when we get back, we are going to have loads to catch up on and loads to do as we grow closer in our relationship with Christ.

Joy/joi/ noun a feeling of great pleasure and happiness

Even though religious education classes did not end as we’d planned, we began with the theme of joy and we hope we can also continue with joy. You might feel pulled in all directions, but we wish you joy throughout the day...in the warmer weather, slower pace and time with each other.

If you need resources, we have them; if you have questions, we'll get them answered; and, joyfully we will be here for our students and families all summer. We aren't going anywhere!

We continue to pray for our catechists, students and their families. Be assured that you are cherished. Stay well and remember to share joy.

Mass Offerings at St. James the Apostle while the Offices are Closed

An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons, such as: • In thanksgiving to God for one’s blessings • For the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), • For the repose of the soul of someone who has died.

To arrange to have a Mass offered for your intentions, please email [email protected]. A $10 donation is requested to be dropped off in the locked box at the Ministry Center. Thank you!
