“Today is going to be a good day, Cleo,” says Little Girl. “It is the first day of school, and you and Olive are going with me. Are you ready to
learn new tricks and make new friends?”
Cleo is so excited. She runs outside to find her best fiend, Olive.
Sitting on the large front porch of her house, Olive watched the squirrels with busy tails jump
from tree to tree.
She suddenly hears Cleo bark loudly. Olive looks up and sees Cleo at her house
across the pond. Cleo calls out,
"Let's go, Olive!
It is time for school."
Olive jumps from
the porch...
and crosses the eld to Cleo's house.

dashes through the yard...
The big, yellow bus is here! As Little Girl steps onto the bus,
she turns and waves for Cleo and Olive to follow her.
Cleo quickly leaps up the steps after Little Girl,
but Olive stops on the first step and shivers. Olive is afraid to ride the bus. She is afraid to go to school.
The bus moves slowly down the road gently rocking from side to side.
It stops again and again. Each time, more children climb on
until all of the seats are full.
Finally, the bus comes to a stop in front of a large, brick building with many windows.
The children jump off the bus and rush to the door leaving Cleo and Olive behind.
Cleo is curious about what might be inside, but Olive would rather go back home.
Inside the school, the hall is

School is a very busy place. Cleo and Olive can no longer see Little Girl.
“Cleo, where are the children going? Where is Little Girl?” Olive asks.
“What do we do?”
Suddenly a loud bell rings, and the children run past Cleo and Olive.
Cleo spots Little Girl going into a classroom at the end of the hallway.
The puppies hurry to catch up with her, but the door closes.
Cleo and Olive jump up high to peek into the window of the classroom.
“Look!” exclaim the boys and girls as they notice Cleo and Olive.
The children giggle each time the puppies jump higher and higher.
The teacher opens the door.
She looks down at Cleo and Olive and
smiles.
“Oh my, puppies, you are in
the wrong room.
Let me show you the way to Puppy School.”
Cleo and Olive enter the puppy room
and look around.
Olive whispers to Cleo,
All of the dogs are bigger than us.” “I am scared.
The teacher introduces Cleo and Olive to the other puppies in the classroom.
“Welcome to Puppy School. You will make many friends and learn new tricks today.”
Across the hall, Little Girl listens to her teacher.
“Boys and girls, It’s time for class to begin. You and your friends will learn many new things today.”

After a fun day at school, Olive looks around the room at all of the
new friends she has made.
She sees ...
Boston, the Great

Annie, the spotted dog, who can not hear but can play along
just the same.
River, who runs fast
and plays fetch with a ball…
Casper, with curly,
white hair who sits up straight
and tall.
A loud bell rings. It is time to go home.
The big, yellow school bus is parked in front of the school
waiting for the children.
Cleo and Olive run toward Little Girl and greet her with a lick on the cheek.
Cleo says, “Today has been a good day.”“No Cleo,” replies Olive.
“Today has been a great day!”
