Te Capitol Teatre in downtown Clearwater now oers a high ca liber perormance venue close to its award- winn ing beaches. Following a meticulous $7 .6 mil lion dollar tra nsormation, it reopened in December 2 013 to rousing appro val by locals and visitors. Te Capitol Teatre has a colorul h istory. Since its opening in 1921 as a vaudevil le theater , this popular perormance hal l has been the venue or thousands o concerts and plays. By 2008, the Spanish Mediterranean revival structure was in desperate need o a acelif . Backers o the well-known area theatre Ruth Eckerd Hal l convinced Clearwater city ocials to partner with them and invest millions to transorm it back to a majestic theater and perormi ng center. Te plan necessitated the acquisition o the adjacent 5,600-square-oot Evening Sun building or expansion areas, a llowing or a larger, more opulent lobby and 125-oot balcony on the second oor. Te addition o six loge boxes, a state-o-the-art thrust stage and richly adorned interior decor complemen ts the excellent natural acoustics and well-planned sight vision. During renovation, a bit o history was uneart hed when a Wall o Honor was ound beneath layers o plaster listing all t he names o Clearwater servicemen who served in World War I. It has been painstakingly preserved and on display as part o t he Capitol Teatre’ s colorul pas t.
