CYC Board Highlights

At the June 20 Board of Directors meeting, the fol-lowing actions were taken:l Immediate Past Commodore Colin Heimensen has been nomiated to serve as chairperson of the Nominating Committee. The next board meeting will be held July 18.

ThIs monTh in my Commodore’s article I want to tackle the subject of “leadership” and share the processes uti-lized in selecting our club’s administrative team. This is timely as our Nominating Committee is appointed in July to identify members who are both willing to, and ca-pable of, serving in the club’s leadership, (e.g. the Board of Directors, Officers, and Committee Chairpersons.)

Clearwater Yacht Club needs a continu-ing pool of volunteers to oversee its important business. I encourage any member who has a desire to become in-volved—whether administratively or serving on a commit-tee—to do so. Our members come to the attention of the Nominating Committee in various ways. Some voice their interest in serving on their own, some are recommended by other members, and some are known to the committee per-sonally or by their involvement generally in our club’s life.

2019 SUNSET CRUISE SCHEDULE DATE SUNSET

July 27 8:25 p.m. August 24 8:02 p.m. September 21 7:30 p.m.

Boaters should meet at the Tiki Bar one hour before sunset. If you want to go but do not have a boat, or if you will be joining us, please contact Reinhard Opitz at [email protected]

Our bylaws outline the requirements for eligibility for the above, (e.g. membership type, time spent on serving on one or more of the club’s standing committees, etc.)

Some additional common sense and practical issues that are important to recognize are understanding how the club works, being somewhat familiar with the various activities by attending most club functions, and awareness of the involvement required to become a successful Director, Officer or Committee Chair.

Finally, because one of the major strengths of our club is diversity of interests within our membership, it is important that we continue to attract leaders who can feel comfortable serving on behalf of ALL our members.

If you—or someone you know—have the desire and com-mitment to become a leader in our club, I invite you to email me at [email protected]. Please let me know about your past or current involvement in CYC and special interests. In some appointments and elections, there is also a more formal letter of nomination required to follow. No doubt about it…. Clearwater Yacht Club will always need the talents of its mem-bership to continue to prosper through the next 100 years.

See you around the club!

Enjoy a week bareboating on a luxury power cat in the BVI. The BVI is a boaters’ dream destination. Easy cruising in a beautiful paradise with friends or family, a great time will be had by all. Each luxury cat has up to four private staterooms with its own bath. Check out North Sound, The Baths, White Bay, the famous (or infamous) Willie T’s, and there is always a big welcome at Foxy’s. GreaT To see everyone enjoy-ing the club. Since our last meeting, we were able to address several issues: new pilings and finger pier on “A” dock and new piling on “C” dock to correct an old problem. While we continue to address ongoing issues with our facility, club leadership is looking into ultimately replacing our aging docks with a new and improved version. We are known as one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs in all of Florida, and as so, should be considered a leader in terms of our marina. We should set an example to others. Therefore, please feel free to give me your input on how and what should be done in the immediate future. Please let me hear from you. See you at the next Waterside meeting July 31.

happY JulY! Where is the time going? Summer Membership is strong and increasing weekly. This is very exciting! There are some events this month that are a perfect opportunity for you to bring a guest and highlight all that your club has to offer. Check the weekly updates and Compass details and make plans to join us for as many events as you can, or just come and relax by the pool!

Ever see something on the menu and think I might try that, but end up ordering your favorite item instead? Well, we have an event for you! July 20 we will be having a menu tasting party in the main dining room, where you will be able to sample items from our current menu. Stay tuned for more details.

Last but definitely not least, our club is currently 499 mem-bers strong!! History is a little cloudy on the last time CYC was at or over 500 members, but the consensus seems to be about ten years ago. This is wonderful news! Let’s see if we can break 500 by the time the next Compass is published. If so, Member-ship will throw a fabulous 500 CELEBRATION!

I believe that we have the best club around, and I take every opportunity to share that with people I meet. I hope that all of us as members of CYC are ambassadors and share the great attri-butes that CYC has to offer and encourage people to come visit.

If you ever have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Think about joining the Membership Committee. We usually meet the first Wednesday of every month in the Board Room; however, this month the meeting will be July 10 at 6:30 p.m.

CruisersBy Don and Joan Carter Cruising Chairpersons

June was the month for the cruisers long-awaited three-week trip to the Keys. And what a trip it was—filled with emotions ranging from excitement to disappointment to danger and fun.

Our voyage began with the Carters, Newcoms, Cardosis and Griffins—with the Donnell’s catching up with us in Ft. Myers. Our first day of the trip was a journey to Venice Yacht Club where along the way Joan and I almost lost my tender off the back of the boat. But we made it! A couple of days in Venice allowed us to enjoy the yacht club, its Crow’s Nest Restaurant and fun walk to the jetty at an inlet to watch people fish.

Then we were off to St. Charles Yacht Club in Ft. Myers for three days of swimming, relaxing and BBQing. From there, we trav-eled to the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. Our group enjoyed the beautiful club and its amenities, including an unbelievable sea-food buffet. We also had fun shopping and dining in the down-town area and even got in a round of golf during our two-day stay.

Marathon was our next destination for three days of fun at Faro Blanco Marina. Jim and Cat Coats met up with us. Unfortunately, the Griffins had to go home along with the Donnells’ boat. However, the Donnells didn’t want to miss out on the fun, so they drove back to Marathon for the weekend with us.

While we were in Marathon, Sondra and Gary Newcom were our hosts and planned a fun-filled three days. First was dinner at the Marathon Yacht Club. The second night we had an elegant dinner at the Butterfly Café, and the third day everyone enjoyed paddle boarding and exploring on a tender. We finished our stay in Marathon with a fun day at the Sunset Grill at the start of the Seven Mile Bridge.

We next arrived at our southern-most destination, Key West, and the Galleon Marina. Three days in Key West included lunch at Louie’s Backyard, a trip to the Southern Most Point, lunch at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville and a day floating and snorkeling off of the Newcoms’ boat at Woman’s Key.

On the home leg of the trip, we had a one-night layover at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club for fuel. Then we continued to South Seas Plantation for two days of winding down, including dinners at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar and Grill and Harbourside Bar and Grill, where we relaxed by the pool or played one more round of golf. Our final destination was a one-night layover at Bird Key Yacht Club before arriving home at CYC.

Joan and I want to thank everyone who attended and helped make this such a memorable time!

The next Cruisers meeting is July 10 at 6:30 p.m. Please join us!Bon voyage and keep it between the navigational beacons!

we haD a great first month of sailing. In our first youth sailing session, there was a good mix of returning and new intrepid sailors, ranging in age from 7 to 13. All were able to sail solo by the end of the session. Weather blew through a couple days that caused exciting sailing and a few days with less time on the water. The intrepid sailors also enjoyed time in the pool, played sailing jeopardy, learned knots and delighted in travel stories from Father Bob.

New this year we offered Race 101: Intro to Small Boat Racing session where the basics of racing were taught. The Intrepid racers were instructed on the tactics and rules of racing and got time on the water to practice.

IRFSA Adult and Youth Fall sailing schedules will be pub-lished soon. For info about the Indian Rocks Family Sailing Association, contact us at [email protected].

Session dates are as follows: Summer Youth Sailing Session 2: July 8-19 Advanced Sailing: July 22-August 2

Chaplain’s Log

seVen weeKs in the desert seemed like a life-time. Humidity levels were at times in the single digits,

and I was becoming all too accustomed to the sight of tumbleweed. Something was missing, and on the day we finally arrived back in Crystal River, I suddenly realized what it was: Salt water…...Gulf breezes…and traffic jams. Eureka!

The solution was just 70 miles away. Having identified the issue, I fired up the car and headed for Clearwater Yacht Club. A return to para-dise was just two hours away on the dreaded US Hwy 19. I arrived at CYC shortly before the noon hour, parked the car, opened the door… and was greeted by the most won-derful sight and sound imaginable! It wasn’t the boats or the docks or the water. It was the sound of hope for the future of our club and the promise of a better world in the years to come. It was the sound of 20 plus children’s voices singing together before lunch:

We’re Intrepid Sailors, shipmates and best of friends! We’re learning something new each day so we can all depend; upon our skills to sail close hauled, beam reach, broad reach and run; and tack and gybe and tie our knots while safely having fun!

By Fleet Chaplain Father Bob wagenseil

What a blessing! Young lives being touched for good! Kids working and playing together and forming friend-ships and memories that will last a life-time—and all of it happening because Clearwater Yacht Club has chosen to make the difference for hundreds upon hundreds of children, parents, and families by serving as “home” for the Indian Rocks Family Sailing Association.

My homecoming from the “wild wild west” has remind-ed me once again that when we invest our time and talent (and yes, even financial resources) to give kids the gift of “life under sail,” then we are indeed making an invest-ment that will bring countless blessings their way, and ours, as well!

Spending a few hours with the intrepid young sailors and their adult leaders who call CYC home truly made my day. I hope that more and more of our members will

enjoy that same blessing this summer. Therefore, if you’re in the area during the days and weeks of sailing camp, stop by and say hello to the kids and their parents.

Let them know how glad you are to have them with us. They will be very happy to get to know you, and you will be richly blessed in return.Wishing you countless blessings,

Fr Bob [email protected]

Cutty Jones is the headliner for Featured Band Friday July 26. Cutty is known up and down the beach for his energizing, crowd-pleasing music. To add to the fun, DJ and member Paul Greenhalgh will play during breaks and after Cutty wraps up the evening.

More fun is in store Sunday, July 28, on the Tiki Deck when CYC hosts its first Triathlon. Check out this fun team event designed to bring together summer members, new members and regular members.

June featured our first Catalina Wine Mixer. We rocked the dock till after midnight, thanks to the great tunes that DJ Paul Greenhalgh was spinning. The second annual Castaway Dayaway took CYC to Three Rooker Island for a day of sun and fun. We ended the month June 28 with Dueling Pianos, the third in our successful Featured Band Friday series and a Red, White and Blue Dock Party June 30.
