  • What is Covid-19?

Covid-19 (family of coronaviruses) is an infective disease discovered in 2019 and not previously recognized inhumans. It was, firstly, identified in Wuhan (China) and it has spread all around the world with tragic effect ondaily activities and global economy. WHO (World Health Organization) declared the Covid-19 outbreak apandemic and a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

    1) How does it spread?

    • Respiratory dropplets (coughs, exhales)• close contacts with infected people• contacts with surfaces or objects that has the virus on it

    2) Common signs and symptoms:

    • Cough, • Sneezing (Rhinorrea)• Fever• Nausea• Breathing difficulties

    3) Preventive actions:

    • Regular hand washing• Covering of mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing• Safe distance of 1 meter between people

    *WHO (World Health Organization) information

  • EASA Safety Directive

The rapid spreading of Covid-19 is affecting the entire world with significant consequences on global economy.Aviation, above all, is experiencing unprecedent and unpredictable bad times due to the current situationworldwide.

EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) issued mandatory safety directives (SD 2020-01, SD 2020-02) tocombat the spread of novel Covid-19 via Airline travel. The directive specifies measures to be taken for flightsserving high-risk areas to ensure health and safety of passengers, airline crews and airports staff.

    Required Action(s) and Compliance Time(s):

From the effective date of this SD, TCO when carrying out commercial air transport of passengers toor within the territory subject to the provisions of the Treaty on European Union shall:

    1. Clean and fully disinfect the aircraft using substances suitable for aviation use after each flightcoming from an airport located in an affected area with high risk of transmission of the CoViD-19infection.

The TCO may implement different disinfection frequency based on a risk assessment which takes intoaccount the operational circumstances and the duration of the disinfecting effects of the substanceused. In such a case, the operator shall ensure that the aircraft is fully cleaned and disinfectednot later than 24 hours after the departure from an airport located in an affected area with highrisk of transmission of the CoViD-19 infection.

    2. Equip the aircraft with one or more Universal Precaution Kits. Such kits shall be used to protectcrew members who are assisting potentially infectious cases of suspected CoViD-19 and incleaning up and correctly discarding any potentially infectious contents.

  • How long does the virus live on surfaces?

One of the factors which brought to such a devastating spread of Covid-19 is represented by the contact with contaminatedsurfaces and/or objects.

According to the above, the World Health Organization and others health authorities, have emphasized that both washing handsand cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily are key in preventing Covid-19's spread.

One aspect that has been unclear is exactly how long SARS-CoV-2, the name of the virus that causes the disease Covid-19, cansurvive outside the human body. Some studies on other coronaviruses, including Sars and Mers, found they can survive on metal, glass and plastic for as long as nine days, unless they are properly disinfected. Some can even hang around for up to 28 days inlow temperatures.

    COMMON MATERIALS TIME RANGE:

    • Textile → Up to 2 days

    • Copper → Up to 4 hours

    • Aluminum → Up to 2-3 days

    • Plastic / Composite → Up to 3-4 days

    • Stainless Steel → Up to 2-3 days

*Higher temperatures and humidity tend to result in other coronavirusesdying quicker at a temperature of 56°C or 132°F.

  • Why is it necessary a daily disinfection on cabin interiors?

“When you’re travelling, you’ve got to be incredibly mindful of where your hands are, because our hands transmit80% of infectious diseases that are known.”(Dr. Mark Gendreau, Aviation health specialist and Chief Medical Officer at Beverly Hospital in Boston, Interview at Travel Weekly).

    1. Plastics/Composites (Seat components, overhead bins, etc.) → Up to 3-4 days

    2. Aluminum, Stainless Steel (Galley equipment, profiles, etc.) → Up to 2-3 days

  • Why is it necessary a daily disinfection on cabin interiors?

    3. Floor surfaces (carpets) → Up to 2 days

A well cleaned and disinfected cabin environment improves theair breathing quality standard of almost 50% avoiding thespread of virus, disease and simple duster particles which mayaffect travellers with allergic illness.
