These easy tips will help to reduce greasy waste, protect the environment and save you money:
Gippsland Water is the authority responsible for water and wastewater services. If you have a question about a stormwater issue please contact your local Council. For questions about environmental issues please contact the EPA.
Gippsland Water Commercial Trade Waste
Trade Waste is the liquid waste generated by an industry, business, trade or manufacturing process (other than domestic waste), which is acceptable for discharge to the sewer. (Discharge from caravan dump points is also classified as trade waste).
Common types of Trade Waste are ‘greasy’ and ‘oily’ waste.
Greasy Waste contains fats and grease. It mainly comes from washing while preparing food.
Oily Waste mainly comes from the motor industry (e.g. service stations and mechanical workshops).
If you discharge Trade Waste to the sewer you need to sign a Trade Waste Agreement with Gippsland Water. The agreement sets out the requirements for discharging Trade Waste to our sewerage system.
We need to manage Trade Waste to:
• ensure the health and safety of our employees and the community;
• protect the environment and reduce or eliminate odours;
• ensure effective waste treatment;
• protect our assets such as sewerage systems and treatment plants;
• allow wastewater to be reused after treatment.

This is not a full list of business types. If you are not sure whether your business discharges Trade Waste please contact us. All applications are individually considered by our Trade Waste staff.
Contact our Trade Waste Team to discuss the type of waste your business discharges.
If it is decided you are a Trade Waste customer it is likely you will need to install a pre-treatment apparatus (such as a grease or oil interceptor trap), and:
• Sign a Trade Waste Agreement.
• Pay an annual Trade Waste fee which is billed in three instalments. The business owner, not the property owner, is responsible for managing Trade Waste discharge and paying the related charges.
• Regularly maintain pre-treatment apparatus to ensure Trade Waste management and compliance.
Our Trade Waste officers can help you if you want to know more.
