Problems
Oil Spills at Pockwood Pond
• 2009: 2000 gallons of diesel spilled• 2004: 200 gallons of oil spilled - more than
5,250 feet of coastline affected - numerous dead marine species found.
1978 electricity law restricted renewable
energy
Solutions
Government initiatives• Legislation was amended March 2015• Comprehensive campaign to reduce energy
consumption – LED’s & solar street lights• Working on renewable energy regulations to
promote grid tie• Solar water heaters and solar air
conditioners encouraged
Best practice in the BVI
Peter Island
• 70% of its power through wind turbines
Cooper Island
• 70% of power through solar panels• Goal of 95% using wind & solar
Green VI’s role

implementation of renewable energy
• Support educational and awareness programmes
• Set targets for clean renewable energy for the BVI
• Exempt clean, renewable energy technologies from import and customs duties
• Permit and support grid tie pilot projects based on solar, wind & anaerobic digestion
• Create an economically viable model for clean, renewable energy that can include rebates, tax incentives, feed in tariffs and/ or net metering
