The city of Sao Paulo covers 1523 square kilometers, where 222 square kilometers are cultivable area.Most of this area lies to the south, where agricultural activities such as growing vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants, medicinal plants, among others are being developed.

The agricultural area, due to its hydrographic composition, is responsible for the maintenance of the water levels of both, Billings and Guarapiranga dams and as such, responsible for 30% of the city’s water supply.

The stimulus to the creation of an ecological agricultural production, meets the needs of promoting food security and nutrition, ensuring access to healthy food for local people.

Two Ecological Agriculture Houses were created and are being structured in order to carry out the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension with agroecological techniques.

Producing food and water

The farmers who decided to adhere to the Protocol must:

• Adopt soil conservation practices and soil erosion control;

• Act to increase the organic matter proportion in the soil;

• Diversify soil utilization through rotation and joint plantation of different species.

Biological control of plagues

• They will also promote rational use of water;

• Control plagues and diseases using less aggressive methods (biological and physical) with the goal of reducing and eliminating the use of pesticides.

Agronomists from the City Hall of Sao Paulo provide agro-ecological technical assistance and grant the Guarapiranga Origin Identification Seal to farmers who obtain the Protocol Conformity Certification, upon proof that they are executing an Agro-ecological System Conversion Plan.

‘THE MANURE’Growing demand for healthy products that are produced in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner.

Food security and safety, in the sense of regular access to food of sufficient quality and quantity. Existing legislation, especially on urban agriculture, climate change and water management

Among existing farmers in Sao Paulo, 40 signed the Protocol of Agro-environmental Practice.

90 farmers in agro-ecology conversion process; 13 farmers with the seal Guarapiranga; 8 farmers with the Organic Seal.
