Lemon produced in São Paulo
The city of Sao Paulo covers 1523 square kilometers, where 222 square kilometers are cultivable area.Most of this area lies to the south, where agricultural activities such as growing vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants, medicinal plants, among others are being developed.
The agricultural area, due to its hydrographic composition, is responsible for the maintenance of the water levels of both, Billings and Guarapiranga dams and as such, responsible for 30% of the city’s water supply.
Guarapiranga Dam
The stimulus to the creation of an ecological agricultural production, meets the needs of promoting food security and nutrition, ensuring access to healthy food for local people.

GUARAPIRANGA ORIGIN IDENTIFICATION SEAL
The Protocol of Agroenvironmental Practice and the Guarapiranga Origin Identification Seal were created.
‘THE CULTIVATION’
Producing food and water
The farmers who decided to adhere to the Protocol must:
• Adopt soil conservation practices and soil erosion control;
• Act to increase the organic matter proportion in the soil;
• Diversify soil utilization through rotation and joint plantation of different species.
Biological control of plagues
• They will also promote rational use of water;
• Control plagues and diseases using less aggressive methods (biological and physical) with the goal of reducing and eliminating the use of pesticides.
Agronomists from the City Hall of Sao Paulo provide agro-ecological technical assistance and grant the Guarapiranga Origin Identification Seal to farmers who obtain the Protocol Conformity Certification, upon proof that they are executing an Agro-ecological System Conversion Plan.

Organic waste, which can be used as manure for growing vegetables.
Purchasing power, including conscious and informed consumption.
‘THE PLAGUES’
Difficult access to credit for producers in the metropolitan area.
Resistance from farmers to accept the proposed changes.
Difficult to self organize and prepare for selling.
Absence of permanent Technical Assistance and Rural Extension.
Caterpillars always appear...
