Christian Living Education III - Fourth Grading Period

Respect for Life - medical studies have proven substance abuse causes serious injury in terms of:

  physical harm

  addiction  psychological and social difficulties

  dependence

  quality of life suffers

Particular offenses against life:

1.  The widespread abuse against physical well-being is the common vices of:

a)  alcohol

b)  drug abuse

c)  smoking (healthy lungs: purple) -> fatal lung cancer

Reasons for these vices:

1)  emotions (depression, sadness)

2)  sense of belongingness

2. Suicide

- The unalterable act of taking one's own life

- It is sort of a psychological "short circuit" which involves running away from a life that has

become "impossible" and from a god who seems completely absent

Reasons for suicide:

1)  feeling alone2)  love, broke-heartedness

3. Abortion

- It is the deliberate ejection of a non-viable fetus from the mother's womb.

- There are 2 ways to live your life. One is through nothing is a miracle. The other is tough.

4. Euthanasia/ mercy-killing

- Deliberate killing of the handicapped and the terminally ill

- NO ONE HAS THE ABSOLUTE POWER OVER DEATH BUT GOD.

When there is no real hope for the patient's genuine benefit, there is no moral

obligation to prolong life artificially by the use of various drugs and machines.

5. War

- John XXVII Pace m in Ferris (Peace on Earth)

"It is irrational to believe that war is still an apt means to vindicating violated rights."

-> PCP II believes in the strategy of non-violence

- With war, it doesn't matter who is right. What matters is who's left.

- Peace is never attained once and for all, but must be built up ceaselessly.

6. Violations against human dignity includes:

- allowing people to live in very poor human conditions

- prostitution- degrading working conditions for laborers

* shouldn't allow people to feel hopeless and not loved

No to Child Labor

- 1/3 of NIKE products is manufactured in Indonesia.

- Workers are paid below subsistence level.

Love command

-> not a feeling but a decision

- do not feed the pain

- love your enemies

Matthew 5: 21 - 22

Exodus 20:13 - You shall not kill.

- right to life protected by 5th commandment

- commands positively a reasonable protection of life

John 3:15GOD ALONE IS THE LORD & MASTER OF LIFE.

Since life comes from and is sustained by God, it belongs to Him.

Not just a question of "not killing" but of:

- protecting

- promoting

- enhancing

the quality of life.
