Definition of “Clay”

• Grain size (e.g. < 2 mm) – could be any mineral;

• Mineral group consisting of sheets of silica tetrahedra

and Al/Mg/Fe octahedra. Known as “clay minerals”,

“phyllosilicates” and “silicate clays”.
