into the darkness

this is an unofficial, fan-made expansion to allow players to use their Descent: Journeys in the Dark miniatures in a game

of Claustrophobia. The expansion contains cards for every Descent miniature current up to the Tomb of Ice expansion, as well as an overlay for the Board of Destiny to allow the Demon player to introduce the new creatures into existing scenarios.

Pages 5-8 of this document contain the Creature card faces, Destiny Board overlay and Misshapen Thing tokens. Print one copy of these pages and stick them to card stock. The Misshapen Thing tokens are double-sided; stick each side of the token to its identically-coloured counterpart.

Page 9 of this document contains the card backs. Print three copies of this page and stick them to the reverse side of the Creature cards.

Page 10 of this document features one standard Creature card back, and the grey card back for the Troglodyte card. Stick these to the backs of the Misshapen Thing and Troglodyte cards.

Cut the sheets into their individual cards (and the Destiny Board overlay) using a craft knife and a ruler. For best playability, place each card into a protective card sleeve.

Place the Destiny Board overlay in the top-right corner of the Destiny Board so that it covers the attributes for Troglodytes (the artwork should line up).

Separate the Troglodyte card from the other Creature cards and place it face up near the Demon player.

preparation

before Play

From all other Creature cards, remove those of which you do not own the corresponding miniatures (obviously you will not be able to use them). Then shuffle the remaining Creature cards and place them in a deck face down next to the Troglodyte card.

The Destiny Board overlay introduces a new space available to the Demon player during the Threat Phase.

The Demon player may place one die on this space during the Threat Phase in order to introduce a new Creature card into the game. If he does so, he draws a number of Creature cards from the top of the Creature deck equal to the score on that Die of Destiny minus the number of Creature cards already in play.

Note: Seeing as the Troglodyte card always starts the game in play, the first Die of Destiny placed on this space must always have a minimum score of 2 to have any effect. Demon cards do not count against the number of Creature cards in play.

The Demon player then chooses one of the cards he has drawn, places it face up next to the Troglodyte card, and discards any remaining cards he drew into a discard pile face up next to the Creature deck.

The creature he chose is now immediately available to be spawned (even during the same Threat Phase in which he drew the Creature card).

Creatures may be played onto the main game board in the same way as Troglodytes (i.e, onto a tile that is clear of human warriors and has at least one unexplored opening) with the following differences:

Firstly (and most obviously), a creature may only be played to the game board if the Demon player has the relevant Creature card in play.

Secondly, unlike Troglodytes which cost 1TP each to play, a creature’s TP cost is determined by the number in the Threat Icon in the top-left corner of its card.

Thirdly, creatures are limited by the number of plastic figures that are available to you. Once a creature is killed, it is removed from the game entirely and may not be used again by the Demon player for the remainder of the scenario (unlike Troglodytes which return to the Demon player’s supply to be used again). If every plastic figure of a particular creature type has been removed from the game, then the Demon player may not spawn any more of that type of creature. The Creature card, however, remains in play and continues to count against the number of cards in play when placing a Die of Destiny on the Destiny Board overlay.

creature limitations

All creatures come in two types: normal and tough.

Normal creatures are denoted by the beige-coloured figures from Descent. In general, the Demon player may only spawn normal creatures onto the game board during the Threat Phase.

Tough creatures are denoted by the red-coloured figures from Descent. The Demon player may spawn a tough creature onto to the game board in exactly the same way as a normal creature (by paying its cost and placing it on a valid tile during the Threat Phase). However, to do so the Demon player must first discard a Tough Troglodyte event card from his hand. The text on the card is ignored completely - it simply allows the Demon player to spawn one tough creature of his choice (Tough Troglodyte cards can still be used in the usual way to spawn a tough Troglodyte; just follow the text on the card, as normal).

The Demon player may spawn multiple tough creatures in a single turn, providing he has one Tough Troglodyte card to discard for each tough creature he wishes to spawn.

Normal and tough creature miniatures are not interchangable. If the Demon player has run out of normal creatures of a certain type, he may not use a remaining tough creature figure in its place, and vice versa.

Normal and tough creatures use different attributes and abilities on the Creature card.

Normal creatures use all stats on the card as they are printed. However, they may not use any special ability text printed in red.

Tough creatures use all stats on the card as they are printed. However, they receive a +1 bonus to any attribute printed in red (i.e, MVT, CBT, DEF and/or Health) and may use any special ability text printed in red along with the creature’s normal ability.

Page 3: Claustrophobia - Into the Darkness

Some creatures allow the Demon player to boost their attributes.

During the Threat Phase, the Demon player may boost all creatures of a particular type by placing a valid Die of Destiny on the relevant Creature card. The number or letter in the green circle to the right of the attribute indicates which Dice of Destiny are valid to boost that attribute for that creature type:

A boosted attribute is increased by 1 for all creatures of that type until the start of the next Threat Phase. Each attribute on each creature may only be boosted once per Threat Phase, for a maximum of a +1 bonus each; multiple Dice of Destiny placed to boost the same attribute on a single creature card will have no effect (though different attributes on a single creature may be boosted using multiple dice).

Additionally, the Tormentor creature has a special ability that is only usable if it is first activated by placing a Die of Destiny on its Creature card (see Creature Clarifications below). Note that both its special ability is activated and its CBT attribute is boosted by using Dice of Destiny showing “4+” results. In order to activate/boost both, two separate dice showing 4+ must be used; a single die showing a 4+ will not activate/boost both.

When the human player declares an attack, he attacks all creatures on the same tile as his warrior (including Troglodytes) as a single target (except Demons and creatures with the Demon trait - see Traits below). Even if there are multiple different types of creatures on a single tile, all are considered a single target for an attack.

After the combat roll is made, the Demon player assigns hits to his warriors. The Demon player must assign hits caused by dice with the lowest results first to creatures with DEF equal to or lower than the result.

In this way, the Demon player must assign as many hits as possible to his warriors - he may not use creatures with a low DEF attribute to “soak up” hits from dice with high results, leaving the high-DEF creatures to “shrug off” hits from dice with low results.

Example: a Condemmed Brute is on the same tile as two Imps (DEF 2), a Bloodluster (DEF 3) and a Wraith (DEF 4), all of the normal type. The Condemmed Brute rolls three combat dice and his results are 2, 3 and 6.

The Demon player must first assign the “2” result to one of the Imps, killing it. He may then assign the “3” result to either the remaining Imp or the Bloodluster. He chooses the Bloodluster, causing it 1 wound. The “6” result may then be assigned to any of the creatures - the Demon player chooses which one will have to die as a result.

Example:

A normal Bloodluster has MVT 1, CBT 1 and DEF 3. It has 2 Health, is Elusive and may interrupt its movement

to attack.

A tough Bloodluster has MVT 1, CBT 1 and DEF 4. It has 3 Health, is Elusive, may interrupt its movement to

attack and gains +1 CBT when it is wounded.

boostedAttributes

The Raveller allows the Demon player to boost both its MVT and CBT

attributes.

o The Die of Destiny must be odd-numbered.

e The Die of Destiny must be even-numbered.

4+ The Die of Destiny result must be 4 or higher.

For creatures with more than 1 Health, place the wound counters next to the miniature on the game board to show how much damage it has taken. The wound markers are not limited by the supply provided with the game; if you run out, use a suitable substitute as a replacement (such as the wound counters from Descent).

When a “lair” tile is drawn and placed on the game board, the Demon player may take any one creature figure that is available to him and place it on the tile so that it covers the Troglodyte symbol in the corner.

If he does so, that tile then becomes a lair for that type of creature and those creatures may be spawned there instead of Troglodytes. However, the figure used to denote the creature lair is out of the Demon player’s supply and may not be later spawned to the game board; it effectively costs the Demon player the loss of one figure in return for greater flexibility when spawning.

Many creatures feature new traits:

Small - Every two warriors with this trait count as one warrior for purposes of the Tunnel Size and Blocking rules. In the case of fractional numbers, round up (i.e, two Imps and a Wraith would count as two warriors).

Large - This warrior counts as two warriors for purposes of the Tunnel Size and Blocking rules.

Gigantic - This warrior counts as three warriors for purposes of the Tunnel Size and Blocking rules.

Demon - This warrior counts as a demon in all respects. i.e, it must be targeted for attack separately from other creatures and is prone to the effects of anything that affects demons (such as the text on Blessed Hammer).

Arachnid - If any game effect allows this creature to roll more than one combat die, any extra hits past the first are assigned as normal by the Human player.

Behemoth - The tough version of this warrior attacks all enemies on its tile by rolling its combat dice once, then applying the results to each enemy warrior individually.

Bloodluster - This warrior may move, attack, then continue to move. Obviously its MVT attribute must be boosted in order to do this.

Misshapen Thing - This creature’s attributes are determined by the Misshapen Thing markers.

When the Demon player spawns a Misshapen Thing, he immediately places the Misshapen Thing markers next to the attributes on the Misshapen Thing Creature card in any arrangement he chooses. The colour of the marker on that line indicates which number to use. If any attribute is left without a marker, it is considered to be zero.

During each Threat Phase, the Demon player may rearrange the markers however he wishes.

Sulphur Daemon - This warrior attacks all enemies on its tile by rolling its combat dice once. The Human player then distributes hits among his

warriors in the same way the Demon player does for non-demon creatures.

Tormentor - This warrior may only attack enemies on adjacent tiles if the Demon player first places a Die of Destiny showing 4+ on this creature’s

card during the preceeding Threat Phase. The die used to activate this ability will not also boost this warrior’s CBT attribute - a separate die must be used for that. The Die of Destiny is removed from the Creature card at the start of the next Threat Phase.
