What is a Resource?

• A resource is something that can be used.

• Resources can be classified or grouped in several different ways.

• In this lesson, we are looking at natural resources and man-made resources

Natural Resources

• Natural resources come from the environment around us.

Natural Resources

• They include things that are nonliving, such as water, soil, rocks, and air.

Natural Resources

• They include things that are living, such as plants and animals.

Man-Made resources

• A man-made resource is something that has been made by a person.

Man-Made Resources

• Natural resources are used to make man-made resources.

These are natural.

These are man-made.

How do we know what to recycle?

• There are many objects that can be recycled. • Some of these are:

– paper– glass– metal and aluminum– plastic– and clothes

Paper• Many kinds of paper are recyclable.

– scrap paper– newspaper– cardboard– magazines

• Just remember to check that the paper is not soiled.

Glass• Glass can be recycled.• Some cities want the glass sorted by color:

transparent (clear) and colored.

Metal/Aluminum

• Metal recyclables include:– aluminum cans– steel cans– copper

Plastic• Many plastic containers can be recycled.

• Look for the symbol.

• The most common plastic to recycle will have the number 1 on it. Plastics with the number 2 are also commonly recycled.

Clothes• These items don’t go to recycling centers like

the glass, paper, plastic, and metal.

• You can ‘recycle’ clothes by:– donating them– giving them to someone else– making them into something new

How I can help the environment?

• If we all do our part with conserving natural resources and recycling products, we will help to ensure that there are enough natural resources for a long time.
