Aston Martin 100 years old.As Aston Martin reaches its centenary, just over a third of the companyhas been sold off to an Italian consortium Investindustrial for £150 millionas part of a half billion pound spending plan aimed at reviving the brand'sfortunes. Investindustrial had previously held a stake in Ducati beforeselling it to Audi. They join Kuwaiti firm The Investment Dar as backers ofAston Martin. The Italian consortium are hoping to achieve similar resultsthat they achieved at Ducati by expanding the model range andstrengthening the dealer network throughout the World. The centre piece of thesecelebrations will be a dedicated Centenary Week which will involve everyaspect of the company, from its headquarters at Gaydon to the spiritualhome at Newport Pagnell and will include the global dealer network and

the Aston Martin Owners Club. This week is from the 15th to the 21st July 2013. For further information, see the Aston Martin web site atwww.astonmartin.com

MSV FIA Formula 2 finished. The FIA and MSV have agreed to not run the FIA Formula 2championship for the 2013 season. After running for just 4 seasons, since 2009, it was agreed that the single team policy for the formulahad lessened its appeal to drivers and if Formula 2 is ever to return,it should be on a multi team basis. The series has drawn good gridsand competitive racing over the past 4 years.

John Cooper Fitch4th August 1917-31st October 2012

Born in Indianapolis, John was an American World War 2 flying Ace who took upsports car racing after the war, dring an MG-TC. Showing plenty of talent in sportscar racing, he wassigned up for the1951 Buenos AiresGrand Prix of SportCars, Argentinadriving a borrowed, restored Allard J2.The car had beeninvolved in a crashand the chassishad beenstraightened bytieing the frame toan oak tree andpowering the Allarduntil the chassis was roughly straight. John used his skill to win the race.He went on to race in Europe driving Cunninghams at Le Mans and won the 1953Sebring 12 Hours

race driving a Briggs Cunningham C4R Chrysler with Phil Walters. Hejoined Fangio and Moss at Mercedes in 1955, winning the Productionclass in the Millie Miglia and sharing outright victory in the 1955 TouristTrophy with Stirling Moss in a Mercedes Benz 300 SLR.He witnessed the terrible crash at Le Mans in 1955 which killed 83people and injured another 120 and it led him to begin working onimproving safety. He developed the Fitch Inertia Crash barrier, theyellow sand filled barriers that are common on American highways. Healso went on to manage the Chevrolet Corvette sports car team and laterdeveloped his own sports car, the Fitch Phoenix which he racedregularly at Lime Rock Raceway, where he was General Manager livingnext to the circuit. Classic car of the month.Lea-Francis Lynx Roadster 1960.

This car was number two of only three built by Lea-Francis in 1960 for the Earls Court Motor Show. This car was displayed without an engine at theshow after being rushed together in only 6 months after a six year break in production at the factory and much financial uncertainty. Both the cars

displayed at the show were finished in lilac. The cars were fitted with the Ford 6 cylinder2553cc engine from a Ford Zephyr MkII, which produced between 107 and 149 BHPand gave the roadster a top speed of 123 miles per hour. The car was based on a 1948tubular steel chassis from the 14hp sports model, adapted to fit the Ford Zephyr engineand Moss gearbox with overdrive powering the rear wheels. Fuel consumption wasquoted at 26 miles per gallon. The car incorporated Dunlop disc brakes and rack andpinion steering, with indepedent Torsion bar front suspension and semi-elliptec leafspring rear suspension attached to a live axle. When new it had a list price of £2096.Although the cars were manufactured very quickly, they showed considerable attentionto detail in a unique style. Unfortunately, despite the high hopes of the management andstaff, the design failed to win a single sale. After only 3 were built, the project wasabandoned, and this expensive exercise for the struggling firm probably contributed tothe eventual closure of the factory. It's streamlined body design had a crash worthinessahead of its time with design features not seen on other cars for many years. This car was originally bought from the receivers by two brothers in 1961 whocompleted the car. The current owner purchased the car in 1968 and had it completely

restored by ChisbonRestorations whoreturned it to its originalmotor show finish, butadded the loweredwindscreen, which wasone of twentymodifications instigatedby the factory in thespring of 1961 to makethe cars ready for sale. The cost ofdevelopment of thismodel may well havecontributed to thedecline of the companywhich was originallyformed in August 1895by Richard Lea andGraham Francis. Basedin Coventry, the firm

originally produced bicycles before switching to car production in 1903 with a strange model fitted with an under floor mounted 3 cylinder engine, which also failed to sell. They switched to motorcycles withmore sucess before moving back to cars but went in toreceivership during the great depression in the early 1930s.The company was revived in 1937 under new management, and produced a new car designed by Hugh Rose, formerlywith Riley. After the war, in 1945, the cars proved morepopular in saloon and sports car layout. Its 2 1/2 litre engineproved popular and was fitted to various racing cars of thetime, including early Connaughts. In the early 1950s salesdeclined again and the company concentrated on generalengineering before attempting a come back into carproduction with the Lynx in 1960. The company finally foldedand the assests were all sold by 1962. In total around 10,000Lea Francis cars were built.

With tremendous hospitality (including free refreshments being provided by TimWalker Restorations on a far flung outpost of the site) this was once again a mostsuccessful and enjoyable event.

Archive Photo of the month By Pete AustinLast month Bradley Wiggins deservedly won the 2013 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award following victories in the Tour de France and an Olympic GoldMedal. It seems incredible but it's 40 years since Jackie Stewart won that award having won the World Championship in 1973. Tragically this wasovershadowed by the death of his team mate Francois Cevert at the United States Grand Prix although Stewart had already made the decision to retire fromthe sport earlier on in the season. This image was taken at the International Trophy at Silverstone which Stewart also won in his Tyrrell 006. Interesting to noteare the safety features (or lack of them!) illustrated in this shot. In the foreground are the railway sleepers which lined much of the track in those days with acomplete absence of safety fencing. Someone who appears to be a fire marshal is perched on top of the breeze block wall while a spectator relaxes in a chairon the roof of his car. Different days!

Boxing day Car meet The Moat House Inn,Alcester.

By Simon and Janet WrightA dry but cold Boxing day saw a good crowd gather at theMoat House Inn for the annual Car Meeting. People tookadvantage of the good conditions to come out for some freshair after Christmas and bring their pride and joy along forfellow enthusiasts to view. This year there was a strongperformance car attendance with Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus,Mercedes and Chevrolet models in attendence. There wasalso a good selection of classic British Sports cars on showwith Triumph and MG having at least a couple of differentmodels represented. Bearing in mind it was the middle of

winter, there were also several converitible models present, butsensibly they had their hoods up to protect the occupants fromthe cold.

There was a good turn out of classic Fords with several Cortina,Escort and Capri models showing why the blue oval modelshave always been popular with the Briitish public. There waseven a American muscle car Ford Mustang on show in theclassic blue and white shelby style colour scheme.

There were also several slightly more unusual cars on show such as the MDH sportscar and the Citroen 2CV Roadster. Slightly older was a classic Riley RMA1 1/2 litre saloon from the 1950's and a vintage Bugatti from before the war. Finally there was a good turn out of motorcycles and several side carcombinations.
