A plant or animal only stays alive if all seven processes are working: Nutrition, which means acquiring food and water. Plants make their food and animals eat it. Both plants and animals need water. Movement and growth. Reproduction, when a living thing is fully grown and new individual are produced. Flowering plants produce seeds, and animals lay eggs or have babies. Respiration, by which plants and animals use oxygen from the air to release energy from their food. Animals take in the oxygen by breathing. Sensitivity, by which living things can respond to their surroundings and adapt their behavior, growth and movements to them. Excretion, which is the process of releasing harmful waste materials from the body. Plant experiments Key Facts: Scientists can perform experiments on plants to see what factors affect their germination and growth. For germination, scientists can investigate the seeds to see if they need light, warmth or water for them to sprout. Once the seeds have germinated, scientists can investigate the seedling to see how light, warmth and water affect their growth. For each experiment, scientist change the one factor they are investigating and keep all the others they are not investigating the same. This makes the experiment fair test. For example, if scientists were investigating seeds to see if they needed light they would give the same amount of water and keep them at the same temperature. If scientists were investigating seedlings to see how much water they needed for growth, they would give each seedling a different amount of water but keep them at the same temperature and give them the same amount of light. In plant experiments, scientists make measurements by using rulers, measuring cylinders and thermometers and record the results in tables and present them in bar charts and line graphs.

Plant and Classification

Life Processes

Key Facts:

A life process is what keeps living things alive. A plant or animal only stays alive if all seven processes are

working:

Nutrition, which means acquiring food and water. Plants make their food and animals eat it. Both plants and

animals need water.

Movement and growth.

Reproduction, when a living thing is fully grown and new individual are produced. Flowering plants produce

seeds, and animals lay eggs or have babies.

Respiration, by which plants and animals use oxygen from the air to release energy from their food. Animals

take in the oxygen by breathing.

Sensitivity, by which living things can respond to their surroundings and adapt their behavior, growth and

movements to them.

Excretion, which is the process of releasing harmful waste materials from the body.

Plant experiments

Key Facts:

Scientists can perform experiments on plants to see what factors affect their germination and growth. For

germination, scientists can investigate the seeds to see if they need light, warmth or water for them to

sprout. Once the seeds have germinated, scientists can investigate the seedling to see how light, warmth

and water affect their growth.

For each experiment, scientist change the one factor they are investigating and keep all the others they are

not investigating the same. This makes the experiment fair test. For example, if scientists were investigating

seeds to see if they needed light they would give the same amount of water and keep them at the same

temperature. If scientists were investigating seedlings to see how much water they needed for growth, they

would give each seedling a different amount of water but keep them at the same temperature and give

them the same amount of light.

In plant experiments, scientists make measurements by using rulers, measuring cylinders and thermometers

and record the results in tables and present them in bar charts and line graphs.

Identification Key

Basic Facts:

Scientists use keys to sort animals and plants into groups by examining their characteristics. They

also use keys to identify plants or animals they are meeting for the first time.

Keys are used to identify different species. A key will usually ask questions based on easily

identifiable features of an organism. Dichotomous keys use questions to which there are only two

answers. They can be presented as a table of questions, or as a branching tree of questions.

Branching Tree Example

This tree could help you identify a new vertebrate. For example, if it had no fur or feathers

and dry skin, you would follow the right-hand pathway at the first and second junctions, but the

left-hand pathway at the third junction. This would lead you to identify the animal as a reptile.
