WHAT IS A COLLEGE SHOwER?Often, momentous occasions are celebrated with a showering of gifts at a Bridal Shower or Baby Shower. At Girls Inc., as a girl celebrates one of the greatest accomplishments of her life ̶ graduating from high school ̶ we invite you to be in her corner. Together, we ensure girls have the supplies to succeed in college or other career training.

WE WILL LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD. Girls Inc. girls will arrive on campus ready to succeed!

Girls Inc. of Tarrant County hosts a College Shower every summer for our college-bound girls. Champions from throughout the community prepare each class for the next chapter. WHAT IS the Senior Spotlight?112 Girls Inc. seniors are featured in these pages. Girls who are college-bound. Girls who have dreams of careers from software design to veterinary medicine, mechanical engineering to child development. Each girl’s path is as unique as the girl herself, but their needs are similar. Someone to be in her corner. Someone to invest in her dreams. Someone like you.

We invite you to get to know each of these girls through this book and be inspired by what they have accomplished and their aspirations.

I’M INSPIRED, NOW WHAT?Are you ready to level the playing field for one of the girls in the Senior Spotlight?

Contact Amy Rasor at [email protected] or 817-259-1050 to learn more about how to sponsor a Girls Inc. Senior Each girl has a unique list which includes more personal information about her needs and wishes. When you select a girl, we will provide you with her detailed list.

You can contribute individually or rally your friends or office to make an impact together! Contact us to plan a giving drive or to coordinate a collective impact together!

Want to help without shopping? Donations can be made at www.girlsinctarrant.org/donate. A $500 donation will level the playing field for one girl and provide the items on her list. Donations at any level are appreciated. Simply note in the donation that your donation is designated for the College Shower and we will do the rest.

“For a long time, my fear of failure and insecurity ruled my life. I felt like I was in a cage and utterly alone. My involvement in Girls Inc. has helped me find the confidence to stand up to anyone who doubts my career goals. Today, I am brave, healthy, independent, and confident because of the guidance of my Girls Inc. mentor. It is a feeling that will live inside me forever, and I will always have a desire to make others feel that special. I have learned life is not all about me. Life is about sharing my knowledge and resources with others so we can all grow into an equitable society. I want the possibility to change the world. I want to build a revolution that could impact a generation.”

“My family is from Yemen. Throughout my life, I have faced negative stereotypical judgments about my race and culture, but

the one consistent place where I have been free to be myself is within the walls of Girls Inc. Here, I am accepted and loved for who

I am as a girl in this world. At Girls Inc., I am not a stereotype. “

“At Girls Inc. I am Asma: a girl who dreams like all the other

girls in this world. Yes, I wear a hijab, and yes, I look different

than other girls, but on the inside my soul is colored Girls

Inc. red just like all of my other Girls Inc. sisters. Girls Inc. is my safe place. At first, I was intimidated by the other girls

at Girls Inc. who were very different from me. Today,

those girls are some of my best friends.”

“With Girls Inc. I have learned to love who I am and embrace where I am from. “

Political Science

“I have been part of Girls Inc. for seven years, and had a revelation at the Day of the Girl March on Main Street. There was a group of younger girls marching behind me. I realized this movement was bigger than me and my friends. The march was touching the lives of a new generation that is smarter and stronger because of Girls Inc. I thought of all the battles women have fought in the past so I could have this kind of freedom. I thought of how women before me paved a path for mysuccess, and I desperately want to pave a positive path for those little young feet marching behind me.

I will study political science and one day join an organization that serves to improve the education system for kids around the world.”

“Seven years of my life have been filled with Girls Inc. I’ve been guided through some of the hardest years by the light in the Girls Inc. staff’s hearts. For that, I am a better person. I gained a new understanding of the world, myself, and my community. I’ve been enlightened and gifted with a team of support I will most certainly never forget. This special time for young ladies to come together to demonstrate the joys and power of being a strong, smart, and bold woman in the modern world has inspired me to grow as a mentor for others. I have grown up here. I have matured here. There is no question about who I am and what I value.

Girls Inc. is where our school bonded. We were very lucky to start programming in 6th grade when we started at this school and to have had it all the way through. We are like a family.

My dream is to teach. I plan to be one of the teachers who breaks the mold of traditional education and enhances the lives of the next generation. I know the classroom is where I belong.”

What will you miss about High school?“The community. We have been together for so long and I am going to miss everyone.”

what are you most excited about for the future?“I want to help give back to the community that has given me so much. I want to help people and see the phoenix rise from the ashes. I intend to become an entrepreneur and a philanthropist.”

Tell Us about your time at girls inc.“I love everything about the Girls Inc. message. I got attached to my mentor when we first started in 6th grade, and now I love Ms. Haugabook. I enjoy participating in the activities. Girls Expression Night gives girls the freedom and safety to express their innermost thoughts and feelings witihout judgment. I have definitely become more in tune with myself through this program.”

Who Inspires you?“I am inspired by Shirley Chisolm. She was brave enough, hopeful enough, and bold enough to run for President as a Black woman during a time when racial tensions were high. She went on to become the first African American Congresswoman.”

“I am transparent, strong, and steadfast in my beliefs. I want to see political change made in our society.”

what are you most excited about for the future?“I have neighbors who have a disabled child. I see how much they struggle each day with things that are easy

for the rest of us. I want them to have a good life and to know there is help available to them. I want to study

pediatrics and physical therapy so I can help children like my neighbor in the future.”

Tell Us about your time at girls inc.“Girls Inc. taught me to never give up.

At Girls Inc., we would practice different scenarios of things that could happen in our everyday lives and

different ways that we could choose to respond to those situations. I felt empowered and like I have a voice.”

“Because of Girls Inc., I have been able to forge lasting connections with the other

girls and my mentors. I have learned about and developed a passion for coding. I have

grown as a person and gained more confidence. I used to struggle with my

heritage, but now I embrace it. ”

What do you want people to know about you?“I have a desire to travel and experience new places and cultures. I think that is the key to our society becoming more tolerant. We need to learn more about one another to move forward with understanding. It is the only way.”

During my five years in Girls Inc., I have been able to participate in the Day of the Girl March on Main Street, Operation SMART, and Made with Code programs. Girls Inc. is a safe, accepting environment that encourages my self-expression. Before Girls Inc., I was shy and quiet. I gradually grew more comfortable contributing to discussions and voicing my opinions and doubts. Being in an all-girl environment has established a judgment-free place that allows me to breach the barri-er of timidity and participate in Girls Inc. lessons without fear of ridicule or misunderstanding. Throughout my secondary education, a passion for computer science, journalism, and English literature has persisted. When I graduate, I will utilize my major to work as a journalist or a data analyst.
